- Cpd4224, on 10/26/2009, -0/+20In case you came here to question "Humans see three colors," it is actually the very first sentence of the article and in it's entirety reads as:
"Humans see three colors that, combined, allow us to enjoy the visible light spectrum." - DimensionalPunk, on 10/26/2009, -0/+19We really got jipped by God, the mantis shrimp is clearly his favorite.
- Menzo, on 10/26/2009, -0/+18FOOKIN PRAWNS!
- WinnersWantWeed, on 10/26/2009, -1/+17From the article: "Polarization vision is used by animals for sexual signaling or secret communication that avoids the attention of predators, the researchers explained in a statement."
does this mean that new DVD players are gonna help me get laid? this sounds awesome!! - dafragsta, on 10/26/2009, -2/+16People who say things like this are no more intelligent than anyone who's ever shouted "GITTRDONE!"
Not everyone can be a cancer/AIDS/poverty research break through dynamo. Saaaaay... what have YOU done to cure diseases or make our lives easier. I know my life would be somewhat better if cheap affordable media would allow me to back up several terabytes of data on one affordable disc. I imagine doctors and scientists would would like that kind of storage as well. You know, the kind that cure diseases. So again, I ask, what do you do that makes an impact on the world you and everyone else live in.
People will only ever do what they are good at. It's not a fault, it's a hereditary and evolutionary fact. - victorycig, on 10/26/2009, -1/+12Boy, I can't wait for the next generation of optical media! That's a data format that will surely only see positive growth in the near future.
- chillybeans27, on 10/26/2009, -0/+11I see three colors of what you did there.
- Super6, on 10/26/2009, -0/+10uh... what?
- fritzmusic, on 10/26/2009, -0/+10Human vision fail. Prawned.
- bbr4nd0n, on 10/26/2009, -0/+8i want gene therapy to see more wavelengths.
- JCH897, on 10/26/2009, -5/+11Sometimes before sleep time, my mom will put shrimp under my bed covers. Boy do they tickle me throughout the night!
- Thorpe, on 10/26/2009, -0/+5I heard they're thinking of doing HD DVD.
- dafragsta, on 10/26/2009, -1/+5You forgot the /s tag.
- MogusMaximus, on 10/26/2009, -1/+5sounds fishy
- relaxeder, on 10/26/2009, -1/+5"Hahaha, man you guys think you're all that but you have no idea. 'Made in God's image,' my fat holy shrimp ass..."
- slashdotordigg, on 10/26/2009, -1/+5It's incorrect. Those rednecks in Texas can only see two colors: white and non white.
- consonance, on 10/26/2009, -0/+3Yeah, all the shrimp on the block are gonna think you're big pimpin'.
- inactive, on 10/26/2009, -1/+4read before commenting :)
- copypastry, on 10/26/2009, -0/+3I'm more excited for the possibilities this may harbor for optical computing.
- CaputNoodle, on 10/26/2009, -0/+3Better article: http://www.photonics.com/Content/ReadArticle.aspx? ...
- Strenoth, on 10/26/2009, -0/+3Not only Yes! but ***** Yeah!
- abk0110, on 10/26/2009, -0/+2still, great comment
- CrazyDave303, on 10/26/2009, -0/+2oops switched articles when I logged on.
- inactive, on 10/26/2009, -1/+3***** optical media!
- Cabrio, on 10/26/2009, -2/+4I see what they did there.
- jokerslayer, on 10/26/2009, -2/+4Works for me.
- Strenoth, on 10/26/2009, -0/+2hah..
3 is right out because wheels ain't useful unless you have a road. And biological systems can't evolve a wheel as a separate part of the body. But some creatures roll along the see floor, so they essentiually are a giant wheel.
number 5: Ever heard of a fire beetle?
Keep working on it :) - DanteShamest, on 10/26/2009, -0/+2the *****
- Pkh42987, on 10/26/2009, -2/+4Great! I don't even own a Blue Ray yet...
- spriggig, on 10/26/2009, -1/+2I wonder what all the species we're driving to extinction might be able to teach us. Ah well, such is life.
- adamward, on 10/26/2009, -9/+10Yes, let's use this great understanding of optics to further our ability to watch Optimus Prime blow up a semi-truck, rather than something like curing diseases or making our lives easier.
- nullcodes, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1Number 3: Ok about the wheel not being useful .. there's lots of terrain where the wheel would be useful .. and energy efficiently .. for example to roll down a mountain side. A small creature with a two or three inch diameter wheel could prolly make good use of it .. not just for transport. It could be made of some hard substance like ivory or turtle shell. Admittedly the gearing and axle system would be complicated and it would need to be retractable and augmented by a legs.
Number 5: Fire beetles can't make fire. Where'd you hear that? Come on, freshly edited wikipedia link pls? - chunkybeefstu, on 10/26/2009, -1/+2...In all the right places.
- relaxeder, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1Applying the most important lessons from nature to our daily lives, I see.
- digitalArtform, on 10/26/2009, -1/+2The Maxwell Renderer (and some others) sees more than 3 primaries now.

- Strenoth, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1hrrrm...
Ok, Fire beetle is beetle that likes fire, OK, never mind.
This seems close http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombardier_beetle but I could have sworn there was a beetle species that actually ignited its chemical mixture. But it seems I was wrong. this one just getsit really hot.
Maybe with out tools, fire is more of a hazard than a benefit, so steam blasts is as close as nature gets? - nullcodes, on 10/26/2009, -2/+3Pfft. We humans still have lots of cooler inventions.
Can someone make a list of ***** that evolution missed? This sounds like a good cracked.com article.
1. Lasers .. how come no creature has lasers? wouldnt be that hard to do .. make a polymer laser crystal and combine with bioluminescence .. come on it aint that hard.
2. Radio .. why the ***** arent there creature that use radio waves to communicate and hunt in packs? They could easily have evolved rudimentary radio communication and then refined it to advanced ***** like spread spectrum tech, ultra wide band and wi fi (secure of coruse). Some years back I thought bees may have this capability and looked into it .. but htat was a piss chase. That could also specialize into radar.
3. The wheel .. ***** sake why not have creatures with wheel? it would be awesome for a small animal especially .. it would work well it lots of terrain.
4. telescopic vision .. OK .. the ***** hawk or whatever has high resolution vision .. that's all fine and dandy .. but it's no substitute for having a double lens system in the eye .. there is a physical limit on how much resolution the retina can have so a telescope would be great here .. also it can adjust from zoom to wide angle.
5. flame thrower .. that's right why not? why is there no creature with a gland/pouch that has flammable fluid and then spray and ignite it (using a highly exothermic reaction) ,,, don't tell me that's not useful. At least the ability to make fire on demand not using tools like we humans do. - slashdotordigg, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1no you will recognize the rejection faster and quicker, possibly saving your ass.
- WauloK, on 10/27/2009, -0/+16. What about a cannon in your chest?
- fragomatik, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1Oh Dave, you crazy! Dugg you anyway.
- unhg, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1#5
Not truly a flamethrower, but the pistol shrimp can do hadouken. - nullcodes, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1*oops ... need to edit the above.. can't = can
Number 5: Fire beetles can make fire? Where'd you hear that? Come on, freshly edited wikipedia link pls? - Yage2006, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1***** DVD players I want eyes that can see like that.
Or at least glasses of lenses of some kind. - nepidae, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1Damn, can I get some of these eyes?
- Frostek, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1Well, you gotta kill some people first... /Riddick.
- daEvan, on 10/26/2009, -2/+2No you don't.
- Archades54, on 10/26/2009, -0/+0Optical tech, storage technologies can allow for a great deal of information to be stored, shared etc which can be the research data for curing those diseases.
To cure diseases, we still needed a lot of other tech that may seem to not be important, but it is all relevant and needed. -
