- lemercier, on 04/09/2009, -0/+45Animals should never be accessories. This stuff makes me want to slap Hollywood
- sheeats, on 04/09/2009, -0/+26I adopted my own chihuahua from the SPCA. She'd been given up by her owners because she got "too big." Seriously? They were expecting something pocket-sized when she was a puppy and ended up with about an 11 pound dog instead. So you threw away a living creature because it was a few pounds too big? People disgust me.
Good article, and good points all around. - StigNordas, on 04/09/2009, -1/+20So sad, I think all of us saw this coming.
- buglady2, on 04/10/2009, -0/+17I work in a specialty pet food store. People are starting to complain about the cost of feeding their pets, and one shelter volunteer came in (for our usual donation) in TEARS because she'd seen three dogs abandoned that day by people who "couldn't afford" to feed them. We are in an area that is NOT that badly off at the moment. People are just making excuses for being idiots.
My cats get food before I do. I can choose to cut back or make other choices. They can't, and I'm responsible for their well-being. - str3ama, on 04/10/2009, -0/+14anyone who idolizes Paris Hilton, regardless of their age, should be punched in the face and deprived the right to procreate or adopt.
We certainly don't need more idiots, and we certainly don't need idiots adopting animals to accessorize with. If you can't afford to care for the animal and pay for vet bills should it get sick - then you really shouldn't have ever adopted it. The economy is not a proper excuse as to why you had to abandon your pet - it only proves how disgustingly irresponsible some people are. And while it's easy to blame Paris Hilton - who IMO is a complete ***** and totally irresponsible - immatellyouwhat, on 04/10/2009, -0/+13Owning an animal requires a big commitment, no matter how small they are.
- m3arvk, on 04/10/2009, -0/+11Which is sadder: these animals being put to sleep or that Paris Hilton is a role model?
- waningdelusion, on 04/10/2009, -0/+9I really do think there should be stricter requirements for pet ownership. Too many dogs, cats, and other common pets are put to death or forced to live in cages because their owners decide to move or just get bored. Why not require at least a short counseling session or a waiting period to prevent people from buying an animal that can experience emotion and attachment and live beyond 15 years on a whim?
- m0tbaillie, on 04/10/2009, -0/+8Goddamn, people are stupid. Who the ***** would ever think it was good to "accessorize" with a living creature? Pathetic.
- llamarama7, on 04/09/2009, -0/+7I caught a raging case of the Paris Hilton syndrome back in SF myself once. My heart goes out to the poor saps at animal control
- jbizzy, on 04/09/2009, -0/+7gross.
- publiclurker, on 04/10/2009, -1/+7Or Paris Hilton not being put to sleep?
- zenerdiode, on 04/10/2009, -0/+6As a dog owner, I cannot possibly believe how anybody can give up on a dog...no matter the economic circumstance. Of course, as an owner of an Australian Shepard and Pit Bull (R.I.P.) I've never had the misfortune of owning a chihuahua, pug, shiatsu, or dinky dog. Either way, I find it hard to give up an animal knowing it'd be put to sleep, after having spent time with it.

- kplo, on 04/09/2009, -0/+5Yeah, that's just messed up.
- RipleyIsDead, on 04/10/2009, -0/+4We have a rescued chihuahua, and she's a great dog. Her previous owners apparently turned her and her litter mate out into the streets. We'd see them wandering the neighborhood together periodically, rooting around for food etc., when one of the dogs went missing we decided it was time to give the other one a home.
She turned out to be a seriously great dog, she doesn't yip constantly or bite, and is (mostly) easy to train and is just an all around good kid - the only thing stereotypical about her is her compulsive need to sit on a person's lap. I don't think I ever would have chosen a chihuahua but now that I've got one living with me I'd never giver her up. - alexawesome, on 04/10/2009, -0/+4Chlamydia?
- MelissaOfTroy, on 04/10/2009, -0/+4It's sad that in this economy people have to give up their pets. It's disgusting how some people are doing it-my coworker's neighbors left their dog tied up in the yard after moving and no one realized it for almost a week. It's downright despicable that this is happening, at least in some cases, because these ***** bought the pet to be an accessory in the first place. I agree with everyone here who says there should be standards for who can own a pet, just like there should be standards for who should have children.
- pikelet, on 04/10/2009, -0/+4Oh god every time I see these stories I just want to take them ALL home. I've always wanted a chihuahua, but when the time comes that I can own a dog, I'm just going to the SPCA until I find one. Can't bear to go to a breeder when there are so many poor little things out there being abandoned like this :( I don't give a ***** if it has papers or pure bloodlines, heck as long it's around that size and looks like one, I don't care what it is. Our neighbour has the most gorgeous chihuahua/jack russel cross, actually. It came from the SPCA too :)
- janinekahn, on 04/09/2009, -0/+4Oh no, that's not right. :(

Captain Obvious - inactive, on 04/10/2009, -0/+2I knew this was going to happen. Pretty soon they are going to have to have a "Fluffy" wing to every animal shelter.
- justjeninsf, on 04/11/2009, -0/+2It costs me $60/month to feed my dogs really good quality food. $60 - that's nothing in the grand scheme, and I can think of several luxury items I could cut out to afford their food (or stop going out to eat so often). If it got to the point where I couldn't keep buying them nice food, I could easily buy lower quality food for a while.
I know we're in a recession, but unless someone is literally on the street I can't imagine not being able to feed the pet they've accepted responsibility for. - dragon76, on 04/11/2009, -0/+2The same thing happened after 101 Dalmations where people thought they could handle one of the most hyperactive and attention-hungry breeds there is. Add to that the well-known genetic defects that pure breeds have and you wind up with people not being able to afford medical bills for a companion animal.
Both my dogs are mixed breeds and one was a high-kill shelter rescue. Everyone is up and arms over things like this but I'll bet you're the same people that chastise PeTA for trying to shut down breeders and pet stores. Where do you think problems like this originate? Do you think a breeder is going to try to convince you that a pet is a big responsibility? Do you think a pet shop is going to tell you the specific problems associated with a pure breed? - dragon76, on 04/11/2009, -0/+2All companion dogs are domesticated wolves, none of them started out small. There's been plenty of genetic research on the subject. Most breeds of dogs were pets of royalty because it was a cool thing to have a "wild" animal as a pet and eugenics was a big part of it so that they would have a specific look. There's several breeds that are new to the general public within just the last century for this very reason including most of the Asian breeds of dogs.
- AmazingSteve, on 04/10/2009, -0/+2Well the Navy doesn't train all those Seals for nothing. You didn't honestly think that they were training PEOPLE down in Coronado did you? Nope, Harbor Seals for animal control.
- WiseGuy1020, on 04/10/2009, -0/+2Still laughing at that. First thing I thought too when I saw "SF."
And I bet they would if asked.
Free the oppressed. - Verugan, on 04/10/2009, -0/+2Just a side-effect of our disposable lifestyles even though life isn't really disposable.
- dragon76, on 04/11/2009, -0/+2Most people throw away more food that $60 worth a month. The truth of the matter is you could feed a dog your leftovers or scraps and be totally fine. I have had times where I could not afford to buy my first dog food and just shared what I had with her. That's what you do.
- pikelet, on 04/12/2009, -0/+2If you go back that far, than yes - no dog started small. However, chihuahuas have a longer history than most toy dogs. Wiki informs me that there's evidence of them existing as far back as 1850 for what we would recognize as a chihuahua, and they can be traced back to the second century BC.
They're not on the same level as newer 'designer' toy breeds, where this breeding has happened within the last century or so and is primarily aimed at the dog show/teensy tiny apartment pet market. What I meant was that chihuahuas are not like some newer toy dogs which were purposefully bred to be miniature versions of bigger dogs, which involved a lot of inbreeding.
Chihuahauas can still have health problems - hydrocephalus (excess fluid in the brain, causes swelling, cannot be treated and dog has to be put down) which is sad and happens in many small breeds, but isn't as common in chihuahuas. Same issues with their kneecaps as many other dogs, and deer type Chihuahuas just have delicate legs. Collapsed trachea is preventable by using a harness instead of a collar so you're not yanking on their delicate necks all the time. - inactive, on 04/10/2009, -0/+2Gotta love pricks and prickettes, that dumb pets once they pass the trend, if you can't take care of an animal you shouldnt have kids.

Tommy Chong - Verugan, on 04/10/2009, -0/+1You can blame Hollywood if you want, but I blame the dump people who don't think about the responsibilities of pet ownership. Think for yourself and don't be afraid to be held accountable.
- pikelet, on 04/10/2009, -2/+3As toy dogs go, Chihuahuas are probably the best. They're dogs that were small from the beginning, not full sized dogs that were selectively bred to get smaller and smaller, suffering mutations from inbreeding in the process.
I admit, there's some very bizarre looking fluffy mutant teacup ones out there, but how can you say no to these faces :(

- ZeroCubed, on 04/10/2009, -8/+9Excuse me, but Chihuahuas? I love dogs - I wish I had ten. But in my opinion, Chihuahuas aren't dogs, they're mutated rats.
...actually, that's an insult to rats...
Anyways, if they really need a home, give them to my grandma. She LOVES Chihuahuas. And she wonders why I never want to visit her home... - SaveDogsOnline, on 04/15/2009, -0/+1The little dogs generally get adopted much faster from the shelters...the big dogs have the toughest time. I've been to over half of the Los Angeles shelters...and it's pretty ugly here. Of the dozen or so shelters, each can receive 20 or more dogs a day as owner turn-ins and strays. They're euthanizing so many animals every week and it's heartbreaking.
