I live in Vancouver, and we have had SEVERAL deaths due to police use of tasers (most famously the incident regarding the confused polish man in the international airport who was killed, while posing no immediate threat to police). There are stories of police using tasers on people who are simply trying to evade transit fares, and just the other day a 15 year old mother holding her baby was tasered. The police always come up with some excuse, but frankly, considering how many people are dying after being tasered, and considering that, as far as I can tell, half the time the tasers are used the police are not in danger and have other options.
It honestly seems to me that police are actually becoming either lazy or wimpy (at least in these cases, and there are MANY just in my city alone - there is another story about the questionable use of a taser every week, and at this point I'd say a few deaths a year in Vancouver... Now, I don't have the stats, but I'm pretty damn sure that less people were killed from being shot by police before the taser came along here than are being killed by the taser!! What kind of sense does that make?! And now they're using it to move sheep?!? WTF?? Cops can't get a sheep off the road now without using potentially deadly force???
