- jimbobaii, on 01/03/2008, -0/+12Christ, how many more times will people ask how many more times an article must get to the front page?
I for one, liked the impractical yet pretty tanks and will digg them each time. Meh. - nesibus, on 01/03/2008, -1/+10I think your brain is photoshopped.
- greenlight2001, on 01/03/2008, -0/+9Your explanation sucks.
- IpwnZnoobs, on 01/03/2008, -2/+11thats not something you could do if u lived with your girlfriend. because its way to awesome for them to understand
- inactive, on 01/03/2008, -0/+9Do the fish get exercise when they swim up?
- Torx, on 01/03/2008, -1/+9i hope he has waterproof floors

- br0ck, on 01/03/2008, -0/+7Well, it was more than a year ago, so a lot of new people haven't seen it: http://digg.com/design/Awesome_photos_of_aquarium_ ...
Actually, as noted in the comments, the pics all came from an expired site, fishinghighway.com, which had a FAQ on how they did it. Click the FAQ link at the very top to view the FAQ. http://web.archive.org/web/20060529015518/http://w ... - carbonetc, on 01/03/2008, -2/+9It's almost as if the glass is "sealed" in a way until the rim breaks the surface.
- dswoap, on 01/03/2008, -3/+9Well don't you feel stupid, because that's not at all how it works. Fill a sink with water, submerge a glass in the water, invert it, and pull it up out of the water slowly...and notice how the water doesn't fall out of the glass until the rim breaks the surface. Same concept.
- djpants428, on 01/03/2008, -0/+6If you just started pumping the air out from the top while continuing to fill the tanks, the water will be drawn up the tubes to replace the air.
- leerayIG88, on 01/03/2008, -1/+6That's why you get Algae Eating Fish or Bottom-dwelling Foraging Fish. Don't forget to have a rocks with good water flow.
- yikiad, on 01/03/2008, -1/+6nifty! kean!
- houndeyex, on 01/03/2008, -1/+6Or a plecostomus's wet dream.
- TheTap, on 01/03/2008, -0/+4Only if you have the whistle or can fly
- ishboo, on 01/03/2008, -5/+9I've thought about doing that so many times, it would be a bitch to set up though. How about a never ending hamster tube, then you could race them, imagine balls of fur running though a tube over your computer every couple minutes, maybe you could even get the Doppler effect!
- joeyjesus, on 01/03/2008, -0/+4The comments on the bottom of that page are funny. About half the people get it and the other half, well maybe they thought it was magic (or non-stop pumps pumping the water to the top of the tubes)
- Tyrghast, on 01/03/2008, -0/+4dugg for "rocket fish"
- Undyingmortal, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3They look like mostly convict cichlids. The orangy yellow one looks also like a cichlid. The long skinny one is a needlenose gar. Very cool fish.
- Stanly22, on 01/03/2008, -3/+6Not photoshopped - when you put your finger at the top of a straw and pull the straw out of your drink, the liquid stays in. As long as you don't take your finger off, or let air leak in, the liquid will not fall out. Simple physics. This is done the same way. Although I have no idea how the got the water in the pipes to start off with.
- smrekar, on 01/03/2008, -1/+4you do what you do to all "floater"s you flush it.
- bkeller81, on 01/03/2008, -1/+4can anyone identify the fish? A couple of the pictures look like convict cichlids, but i'm not sure about the others.
- drimo, on 01/03/2008, -2/+5Seems neat, but anyone serious about fishkeeping would realize this would be a maintenance nightmare. Even with a watertight seal enabling the water to be contained within the pipeline, a water change or break in the seal could siphon water into the other tank.
- BLKMGK, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3Had a tank with tubes between it and another. One problem I had was that fish wouldn't go through it - they would see though the acrylic and see the water level - they refused to go through that "barrier". I finally masked that line and then they began to use it some. MUCH smaller than this but still pretty cool. You can buy acrylic tanks with tubes connecting below water level - they too look pretty nice.
- salinemist, on 01/03/2008, -1/+4Wow, looks like a bitch to clean.
Wait, someone already said that? Damn. - shaelen, on 01/03/2008, -1/+4Cool. I've thought about doing this many times, but I've never seen it done before. Thanks Internet!
- weezcnr, on 01/03/2008, -1/+4lol dude it's just like submerging a glass underwater and flipping it over, when you pull it up the water stays in the cup till the very brink. The water won't flow back into the tank unless there is something to replace it and because it is a perfect seal no air can get in to do that.
- brubakerj, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2Where is this?
- KiltedMile, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2Saw this on cable TV, the guy uses a magnet on the outside to drag a mop-looking scrubber with a metal core to clean the tubes. Pretty cool!
- lucutus, on 01/03/2008, -1/+3I made something similar years ago with clear pipe and acrylic. It was cool for a while to have a fish habitrail between 5 20 gallon tanks. Then came the troubles of cleaning. If you only had one level it wouldn't be to bad. Mine was five levels so there was no cleaning one tank at a time. It got to be more trouble than it was worth quickly.
- 0akley, on 01/03/2008, -1/+3I've always wanted to do this... but yeah it must get dirty as hell
- WickedEEE, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2Plecos, an army of plecos could keep the glass clean. You'd need some other scavengers in there to clean out the floaters. It looks cool, but far more trouble than it's worth.
- inactive, on 01/03/2008, -3/+5Or untill you stop bitching about it
- inactive, on 01/03/2008, -1/+3Dude its the Mary Jane you've been smoking.
- EmperorAwesome, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2Yeah, till they chew through and start the rebellion.
- fatlip, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2they have magnetic scrubbers.. i use one :) -- but then again i dont have a sick pipeline :(
- Apoc, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2Joey, i think you've just been watching too much gay porn.
- mal1964, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2 a dive bar where i live has a simple setup and it has two 50 gal tanks and the tube is 6 in round and a total length of 8 ft . and the fish go from one to the other.

tank tank
- blantonator, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2umm, what? fish are much different than a birds. All the fish needs to do is point his body upwards and and swim. As long as he is appropriately buoyant, he should swim very easily, in any direction.
- stotty, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1Actually, fishes is perfectly acceptable as a plural. See http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/fishes.
And you're welcome. - thesonofdarwin, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1Sounds like your experience with aquariums is limited to the 15gal starter sets available at Wal-Mart? With proper water flow and good wet/dry filter it would require little work. One might be more concerned with their choice of some of the more aggressive cichlids, but with the space I doubt there'd be much problem.
- inactive, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1Looking at the background in the pics, it does look like the same fish tank in to different locations. The only explanation is a warp tunnel.
- Otto, on 01/03/2008, -1/+2If the tube is sealed entirely, then the water can't fall out the bottom because it's pulling a vacuum at the top most point of the tube. The volume of water difference shouldn't matter.
Imagine a simple U shaped tube running between two close by tanks. If the tube was full of water, with no air in it, then the only way the water could come out would be if there was something else replacing it. Since the tanks are on the same level of height and have the same air pressure on them, you also can't get a siphon effect.
Now, in practice, such a setup would be difficult to maintain. Something as small as colder air in one part of the room could cause the water levels to shift and potentially overflow. It'd be much simpler to seal the tanks and leave the top of the tube unsealed. -
