- seattlegirluw, on 10/06/2009, -0/+31Yes, but it's a TURTLE disease, which means it spreads slowly. Everyone will have plenty of time to get out of the way. Except for those cocky hares.
- DeskFlyer, on 10/07/2009, -1/+20As opposed to the cosine flu?
- MacBookForMe, on 10/06/2009, -0/+16...and many more pet diseases could easily spread to humans...
- badqat, on 10/06/2009, -1/+12I've never really gotten turtles as pets. I prefer my pets to have fur, I suppose.
But this ought to give parents pause in letting their kids have pet turtles beyond the cuddly issues. - mav3rick92, on 10/08/2009, -1/+11I LIEK TURTLES!
- 1MACVEEDUB, on 10/08/2009, -0/+8Could you people please stop having sex with your pets.

- slyzxx, on 10/08/2009, -0/+4Because people are stupid and don`t wash their hands before and after handling turtles, I`ve had them for over 20 yrs and no problems.
- hypnotichexes, on 10/08/2009, -0/+3Great, now I'm gonna get to hear about Turtle Flu for the next 12 months.
- xenophrenia, on 10/08/2009, -0/+3Turtles used to be illegal as pets due to them being carriers of salmonella. Here is a PDF of a FDA regulation regarding this. So ... there are a lot of diseases possibly carried by animals. Watch out - all pets will be banned because they are hazardous to our health. Someone will try this ... mark my words ; ).

/o&a - mbtria, on 10/08/2009, -0/+1The article provides the genus and species of the turtle, but failed to give the species of Mycobacteria that was found. This was a failure of journalism in that the best description given was of the wrong organism. There are 50+ species of Mycobacteria.
- mbtria, on 10/08/2009, -0/+1It is a unnamed Mycobacteria species, not a staph infection.
- tgc1, on 10/08/2009, -1/+2Don't forget the Avian Flu.
- scottlawsonbc, on 10/08/2009, -1/+2ZOMG PAAAANNNNIIIIIICCCCC!!!!!!!
- s0nicfreak, on 10/08/2009, -0/+1Oh please, you can get diseases from furry animals too. Simply teach your child how to handle the turtle and things will be fine.
- lorddazzer, on 10/08/2009, -0/+1Someone call mario!
- anubis2night, on 10/08/2009, -1/+2this title is a bit of a alarmist call. the article just says that turtle are susceptible to a new type of staph disease that has not been seen before. it also mentions that children have been known to get sick from turtles and or staph disease. but it also mentions that pets are ok even turtles if they are healthy and clean. pretty much everything we already knew. apparently if ou have a cut and your turtle is sick you can get sick too. next item from this website: caution water may be wet...
