- manzplan, on 11/11/2008, -0/+43good job for the bird.. and amazing the babysitter admitted to this as well. some would have just told the parents...
parent"How did everything go today"
babysitter"Fine"
rather than "Well your kid almost died and if you didnt have the bird, it would have" - Fuel90, on 11/11/2008, -0/+27He better have gotten a cracker....
- Julie188, on 11/11/2008, -1/+27This story has me all choked up.
- fluidfoundation, on 11/11/2008, -2/+27E' wasn't chocking, e' was pining for the fjords.
- Lagstorm, on 11/11/2008, -2/+25I read the headline too fast and was all excited about a parrot choking a kid. Then I read the article and was sorely disappointed.
- celeronxl, on 11/11/2008, -0/+15Buy this bird a beer.
- Gr00ver, on 11/11/2008, -0/+12Polly want a medal?
- amirbd, on 11/11/2008, -0/+12I dunno. I think they can associate phrases they have learned with things they see.. A friend and I were once sunbathing on a rooftop next to a cage with a parrot in it. As soon as we took our clothes off and laid down with feet facing the cage, it said "Your feet smell!" It was hilarious. It only said it once and then returned to making awesome techno sounds..
- hutch1973, on 11/11/2008, -0/+11Wow, and all my pet Cocker Spaniel did today was get into the bathroom garbage and try eating a tampon applicator. Maybe I should get a bird.
- ThePowerDigger, on 11/11/2008, -3/+14Proud to be Birdbrain
- doublefelix, on 11/11/2008, -1/+12The parrot screwed up its' line. Should be "baby momma". Makes you wonder though if a lot of these creatures we interact with on a day to day bases might in fact be sentient, but just saddled with a crappy vocabulary.
- weatherlsp, on 11/11/2008, -0/+10Alex, the African Grey at MIT knew a lot of words and what they meant. Some species are quite intelligent actually.

- KozmoTKramer, on 11/11/2008, -0/+7Pop Tart? Since when were 2 year olds allowed to eat Pop Tarts?
- damang111, on 11/11/2008, -0/+7thanks.
I stand corrected. - SammyJr, on 11/11/2008, -0/+7When you gotta go, you gotta go. The problem was that she gave the kid food before going to the bathroom. Should have waited until she got out before feeding the kid.
- AtomicTheory, on 11/11/2008, -0/+6While the quote doesn't exactly apply, because the parrot didn't die, I still roffled pretty hard. I don't know if most diggers would know what you're talking about though.
- securitymonkey, on 11/11/2008, -1/+7""If (Willie) wouldn't have warned me, I probably wouldn't have come out of the bathroom in time....""
Talk about pinch'ing it off in a hurry. Yikes. - richenloaf, on 11/11/2008, -0/+6you've obviously never watched a 2 year old before
- MCGrunge1, on 11/11/2008, -0/+6Norwegian Blue: Remarkable bird, beautiful plumage!
- ashwinmudigonda, on 11/11/2008, -0/+6Tot Rescue is no more. He was a nice man, a friend, father and an ovolacto vegetarian. His only mistake was a thing for parrot eggs.
The parrot was sentenced to 25 years of solitary confinement. - inactive, on 11/11/2008, -0/+5Not that amazing. Depending upon the species, that parrot was likely smarter than the two-year-old.
Edit: Google search says it was a Quaker Parrot. They are smaller birds, but extremely intelligent and sensitive to humans.
Here's one example:

- FeloniusMonkey, on 11/11/2008, -0/+5e's just resting
- secrity, on 11/11/2008, -0/+4The same type who leaves a tot unattended while they are eating.
- Czechxican, on 11/11/2008, -0/+4Phoenix Down!
- richenloaf, on 11/11/2008, -0/+4So did you sit the kid on your lap while you pinched a loaf? As a parent of two little kids i know it's impossible to constantly keep your eye on them for any extended period of time. Plus kids need a bit of autonomy, you obviously don't let them alone by the pool or in the medicine cabinet, but they are learning independence and are going to explore and move around the house. Sometimes bad stuff happens regardless of how good the babysitter is.
- boulderdsh, on 11/11/2008, -0/+3because she isn't a very good babysitter. I mean, she WAS feeding the kid a pop-tart. I have two year old twins and I never go in the bathroom while they're eating, I'll hold it till I'm in pain before leaving them unsupervised with food. If she hadn't been in the bathroom she would have seen her start to choke much sooner.
- inactive, on 11/11/2008, -0/+3I think that's just a case of conditioning - the bird had associated the baby with the sound "mama baby," and the baby was the source of the parrot's distress.
- diggtochina, on 11/11/2008, -1/+4she was taking a *****
- boulderdsh, on 11/11/2008, -0/+3This was not a baby, it was a two year old. You only do back thrusts on a baby under one year old. She did the right thing.
- Fleagleman, on 11/11/2008, -1/+4I think I've finally found the story that really is too inappropriate for the appearance of Pedobear.
Oh, wait. What have I done? - Ghostalker, on 11/11/2008, -1/+4Ninja's don't have toddler-saving parrots.
- and386, on 11/11/2008, -0/+3"Such perceptions are no longer considered scientifically valid." [wikipedia]

Lately scientifics discovered that birds intelligence had been greatly understimated, I read quite a few articles about that. From what I remember they say that the brains of the birds
is quite large compare to their head size and also that inteligence is more a matter of complexity of the brain than a matter of size. - MendotaLee, on 11/11/2008, -0/+3What kind of Parrot was it?
- zadadka, on 11/11/2008, -0/+3"Excuse me, I wish to complain about this parrot what I purchased not half an hour ago in this very boutique !!"
- secrity, on 11/11/2008, -0/+3The kid shouldn't have been left unattended while eating.
- diggproof, on 11/11/2008, -3/+6Well, she's fired.
- tastypaste, on 11/11/2008, -1/+3The Secret Service just ordered one of these to guard George W. Bush from rogue pretzels when he leaves office in January.
- tito13kfm, on 11/11/2008, -1/+3Who's to say that the toddler wouldn't have choked if he was being supervised as well? Kids routinely just shove anything they can find in their mouths, they are extremley quick when it comes to eating Lego blocks and lincoln logs. Having to stop a 2 year old from choking is something that most parents will go through yet most will never discuss because of the fear of being labeled a bad parent.
- ChadN, on 11/11/2008, -0/+2babby? Where instain chokking?
- sab0tage, on 11/11/2008, -1/+3Why was a toddler eating unsupervised?
- damang111, on 11/11/2008, -3/+5I find this hard to believe.
Parrots do not know the meaning of words they just repeat sounds.
what are the chances of a parrot imitating the sound "mama baby"? - Bashell, on 11/12/2008, -1/+3@richenloaf
That's kind of my point. Give a child enough time and they will find the only thing that they can that will cause them harm. Your job as someone watching a child is to be close enough to stop them before they hurt themselves. I know that if I leave the room "really quick" then when I come back there's a high probability that my son is going right for the light socket. Sure, give him his independence, but don't let them out of your sight.
And as to what you do with the child while you're in the bathroom... well, if you absolutely can't wait until you put them down for a nap, yes, you bring the child into the bathroom with you.
The whole reason kids need babysitters in the first place is because they're quite likely to hurt themselves if left unattended.
While we're on the topic of logical parenting, to all of the morons who let their kids run around stores unsupervised... Parenting, you're doing it wrong! - wassim2k, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2The babysitter had to tell the truth. The parrot wouldn't stop saying "I'm gonna teeeellll, I'm gonna teeeelllll"
- minorgods, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2Or at least the pop tart
- inactive, on 11/11/2008, -0/+2Google search says it was a Quaker Parrot. They are smaller birds, but extremely intelligent and sensitive to humans.
