- dmbchris, on 04/23/2009, -3/+26There are millions of kangaroos shot every year in an effort to control overpopulation. This is no different than killing deer in Minnesota.
- inactive, on 04/23/2009, -1/+23"The alternative would be leaving the joeys to die from predation, dehydration or starvation." Decapitation sounds pretty nice compared to the alternative.
- inactive, on 04/23/2009, -1/+20They're not endangered. You can buy kangaroo meat in supermarkets. It's a dark red/brown colour and quite lean.
- 2Deluxe, on 04/23/2009, -1/+20Kangaroos are a a big problem, their population needs to be controlled or else they starve themselves, not to mention their generally being pest-ey. I dont understand the whole hoo-ha about joeys being killed, they're just younger. The only difference between killing roos and killing deer is that you don't have roos. Also they're delicious.
- Hellman109, on 04/23/2009, -1/+14They are a plague in some areas, some areas just have far too many.
Killing kangaroos has been happening forever.
We also eat them. - DavidTurnbull, on 04/23/2009, -1/+14It's not just a chance. Boxing gloves are actually harvested FROM Kangaroos. Little known fact.
- chromerium, on 04/23/2009, -4/+16We increased their food and water supply, therefore increasing the population.
There is about 25M kangaroos, in the eastern states, up by about 15M in the past 15 years.
I wish you yanks would piss off and worry about the economy instead of our roos. *****. - CM23099, on 04/23/2009, -1/+11Kangaroos are so numerous that they are pests in many parts of the country. Culling a few thousand won't make a difference.
- Phlosten, on 04/23/2009, -3/+13What a ***** article from Daily ***** as usual.
- GregDude, on 04/23/2009, -3/+12Also in today's news, government workers poisoned another fire ant nest killing millions of tiny cute red ants. The government plans nothing less than racially motivated genocide, attempting to rid the country from the entire species it labels a 'pest'.
- protodon, on 04/23/2009, -1/+10Not that I agree with this whole culling thing but why would that lady think that the govt would allow her to save orphaned joeys. Isn't the point of this that the govt wants a lot of kangaroos to be dead?
- Kitakaze, on 04/23/2009, -3/+12Almost as horrible as the fact that we haven't started culling maudlin twits whose retarded intellectual and emotional development has left them unable to respond to environmental issues in any other way than, "Aaaahhhhw! Cute!!! ^_^"
- Akaricloud, on 04/23/2009, -1/+10We should not cull them, therefore letting them grow to such staggering numbers that they thousands of square KMs of vegetation, not only causing themselves to starve to death but the hundreds or thousands of other animals which live(d) in the vegetation.
- CM23099, on 04/23/2009, -2/+10What is this, the new Australian stereotype?
It used to revolve around drinking Fosters and Kangaroos hopping down the street, now none of us have guns and all our porn is censored. I prefer the old stereotype tbh. - MacEnvy, on 04/23/2009, -3/+11I don't understand how those two things are related.
- sirflibble, on 04/23/2009, -0/+7Yes we eat Kangaroo, it's quite good rare on a BBQ..
But not the culling is done to control over population. Kangaroos in this part of NSW and the ACT is epidemic. - inactive, on 04/23/2009, -0/+7Veal.
- Jeepy, on 04/23/2009, -3/+10My dream of recreating Running Man using baby kangaroos is now one step closer to reality. Killian I'm coming for roo.
- Akaricloud, on 04/23/2009, -1/+8I'm somewhat lost at the logic in all of this. They don't mind that the adult kangaroos are being killed, it's just the cute and cuddly little joeys we shouldn't be able to kill? In 3 years time we'll just be killing them, why not get them out of the way now to prevent having to cull them in the future?
FTR: I am an Australia, I've seen firsthand just how overpopulated the areas are where kangaroos are hunted on a commercial basis and if you could see the amount of kangaroos living in areas with next to no vegetation, just red earth, then you'd understand why they're being culled that way they are. I also eat kangaroo meat maybe once a week. It's cheaper then beef and pork by a long shot, it's absolutely tender and delicious and has (I believe) the lowest fat content of any commercial meat on the market. - eviscerator, on 04/23/2009, -0/+6If we control the population of animals, who controls the population of humans? Those pesky buggers are everywhere! :P
- 919kwjc, on 04/23/2009, -9/+15How can I be part of this massacre? I mean, beheading a kangaroo! That's awesome!
Any chance he could have boxing gloves on as I approach? - Akaricloud, on 04/23/2009, -0/+5*licks lips*
- srg13, on 04/23/2009, -1/+5I didn't read the article, but kangaroos have always been pests in a lot of areas, and I know one or two people (they come from out in the country) who shot them as kids...
- nshady, on 04/23/2009, -2/+6They're a pest. It's necessary.
- Wade, on 04/23/2009, -2/+6Short answer: Yes. Long answer: Yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss.
- srg13, on 04/23/2009, -1/+5"Category C: semi-automatic rimfire rifles holding 10 or fewer rounds and pump-action or semi-automatic shotguns holding 5 or fewer rounds. (Restricted: only primary producers, occupational shooters, collectors and professional sporting shooters can own functional Category C firearms)"
That's the most powerful the public can own, but police and other security personnel (like armoured car drivers) carry handguns, and the armed forces have all sorts of weapons, like assault rifles etc.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_politics_in_Austr ... - sirflibble, on 04/23/2009, -1/+4and Kangaroos are a pest.
- choiboy, on 04/23/2009, -0/+3I hate "digg"ing something so terrible.
- fety, on 04/23/2009, -2/+5boo fricken hoo!!!
"The spokesman said the quota for the shooting zone would be 150,000 eastern grey kangaroos annually - a "sustainable 15 per cent" of the one million eastern greys in the area."
Did you guys ever think that AU would be OVERRUN with roos if they didn't cull the herd? aka OVERPOPULATION. get it? - Otto, on 04/23/2009, -0/+3Yes, they eat it. Kangaroo is delicious.
And they have to kill the things, as they're basically giant hopping rats. They breed ridiculously and have no really serious natural predators, except man. So if they don't kill them, then they end up becoming major pests, dying of starvation and dehydration, etc. Nature can be a cruel bitch, sometimes. Better to get a clean bullet in the head, you know? - Akaricloud, on 04/23/2009, -2/+5Yeah because the japs have been doing the world a favour for the past 50 years by clearing those overpopulated waters of the whales.
I salute them! - kubedawg, on 04/23/2009, -2/+5Kangaroos are considered vermin in most parts of Australia. That is why they are killed in mass quantities. I bet you don't go all ***** up when we in America kill mice by the thousands.
- ZimbuTheMonkey, on 04/23/2009, -0/+2I guess people didn't like my apologetic explanation. :(
- gordigor, on 04/23/2009, -0/+2because Kangaroos are cool, deer are just deer.
- amcnair, on 04/23/2009, -0/+2Remind me again.. how many people died at Three Mile Island? Oh, right, none.
- benderillo, on 04/23/2009, -0/+2we have aids to take care of that
- inactive, on 04/23/2009, -1/+3Yeah because I'm a wild animal starving and suffering from dehydration, and in danger of predation. Idiot.
- iDiggYa, on 04/23/2009, -0/+2Saves ammunition?
- DavidTurnbull, on 04/23/2009, -2/+4I don't think the internet filter is happening anymore. Especially since there's an entire upgrade to Australia's broadband in the works to make the internet faster and more accessible.
- Akaricloud, on 04/23/2009, -0/+2When the day comes that I can legally cull and eat humans, I'll be the first to sign up.
- GeekNurse, on 04/23/2009, -3/+5These comments suck.
- inactive, on 04/23/2009, -0/+2I believe decapitation is one of the quickest ways to die.
- Myztry, on 04/23/2009, -0/+2Would be like rowing the paddles in two different different. Way to get nowhere quick...
- Myztry, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1Didn't Disney teach people that Kangaroos are actually just large mice...
(Who were the mice characters? - smart and dumb - dumb mouse based on character from classic literature "Off Mice And Men") - Myztry, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1You just need a license, and a legal reason for having a gun. Not the kind of guns that can be easily hidden. The sawn off shotgun has long been illegal, as it's only real purpose it to get close enough undetected to threaten/kill people.
- pimpofpixels, on 04/23/2009, -1/+2What do you know from funny?
- benderillo, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1You're an idiot. I have plenty of compassion. I also know that if something isn't done about over population the kangaroos have a much worse fate.
- SmokenJoe, on 04/23/2009, -1/+2How to control the population was decided after research and much debate by the wildlife husbandry people. This includes directly studying how humane different ways of killing the Joeys to avoid suffering. There is actually a rather extensive amonnt of research in this one part of the population control issue. Better than letting them starve to death.
In this case at least the people really do care there is a massive overpopulation in some areas. - booshpilot, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1Terrorists and Multinational Corporations who exploit the indigenous people control the population of humans--that's who! Oh and Super power countries!
Look at three-mile island, bhopal india, chernobyl, recently afghanistan and iraq. It sure as hell isn't the Somali pirate hoards the media has been going on about. -
