He blew out the highlights because of an intense flash or strobe and lost all detail where there should be texture. It's highly unlikely the image was photoshopped. The posture of the cat says that it is being held by its scruff from above. Note the tail tuck, which almost every cat does when you scruff them. It's rare I get to talk about things I actually know, but I happen to be a veterinary student in animal behavior, work at an animal shelter, and do photography on the side.

        That said, can't we just enjoy something without attempting to tear it to shreds?
