. . . University of NSW whale expert Rob Harcourt said lost calves often confused boats for their mothers.
He said adoption was "highly unlikely".
Fears the young calf may be part of a pair sighted earlier this week off Dee Why were alleviated when it was confirmed that it was a humpback and was not a southern right.
Mr Harcourt warned of harmful effects of swimming with the animals.
"There were people swimming with the mother and calf off Coogee last week and it freaked them out," he said.
"If people try to swim with whales, there's a good chance they can distress the mother - this is how they get abandoned,"
"It might be a peaceful experience for people but it's not for the whale". - vroom101, on 08/19/2008, -0/+11Heartbreaking quote from the article:
"The outlook is not good, but we are giving the calf its only option. It can't be fed, and in fact we wouldn't know what to feed it" because it is not weaned, National Parks and Wildlife regional manager Chris McIntosh told ABC radio.

- cnot3, on 08/19/2008, -2/+7Don't you hate it when whales bond with your yacht? It's like they have nothing better to do.
- azikrogar, on 08/19/2008, -1/+6Every time a story pops up like this it makes me feel like we're just getting in the way. I wish we were more connected and linked to nature.
- Gnar04, on 08/19/2008, -9/+14all together now
"AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW" - linga99, on 08/19/2008, -0/+5Surely they could think of something to try feed it? Bulk calf food through a giant teat? It has to be worth trying. Just don't give up.
- feanix, on 08/19/2008, -1/+6Hey, congrats. You're a giant douche.
- jamaph, on 08/19/2008, -0/+5I'd just toss it in my fish tank man. It'd be a great attraction for my dinner guests.

If i were the multimillion dollar owner of that yacht (it's a nice yacht) i'd probably try to find some way of feeding that whale. Perhaps something like cows milk + cream could emulate whale milk. Sure you'd need a ton of it but if you have the money for a yacht you wouldn't care about the cost of feeding a whale.
Just think how cool it would be to have a pet whale. - majeztic, on 08/19/2008, -0/+4That mirrors the subject matter perfectly. Thank you!

. . . National Parks and Wildlife Service spokesman Chris McIntosh says the calf now appears to be heading back towards Pittwater.
He says the whale is getting weaker, putting it at risk of a shark attack.
"As it runs out of body reserves, it may beach itself or simply slip away from us in shallow water," he said.
"As that happens it does become a little bit susceptible to predators." . . . - TimeForAnal, on 08/19/2008, -0/+3HURRRR I AM BOAT

http://www.lee-knight.com/Main/images/cover_art/ar ... - Dante2005, on 08/19/2008, -0/+1I think for the safety of our aquatic friends or lunches if your Japanese, we should start to fix teats to the bottom of all boats to stop this tragedy ever happening again.
