- bteprog, on 07/01/2009, -4/+45I have 130 pounds of greyhound (2 of them) waiting for me when I get home. My youngest gets so excited, her 18" tail can send things flying off the coffee table. They are a wonderful breed and make great house pets. They don't need a whole lot of exercise, just a daily walk.
I live in Florida and hope this industry will be closed in the near future. I encourage everyone to consider adopting a greyhound when looking for a dog. There are thousands of them that need a forever home and they really do appreciate your kindness. - feelmypimphand, on 07/01/2009, -5/+45"When I answer the front door, I'm greeted by 60 pounds of twitchy curiosity waiting to come inside."
I wonder what happens when she answers with the back door. - alanocu, on 07/01/2009, -6/+35New Hampshire ended live greyhound racing.http://blogs.browardpalmbeach.com/juice/2009/07/ne ...
Hopefully, Florida will end it as well. - Enlefo, on 07/02/2009, -9/+36Dog racing should be banned, straight up animal cruelty.
- SteveMTyler, on 07/01/2009, -3/+25they could have just slowed it down to a stop, but then they would have had to call off the race and not make the tracks 10% cut of the gambling money.
The article made it sound like there were only two options, full speed, full stop. I don't buy that. - jayrok, on 07/02/2009, -0/+19Ohhh.... I was expecting to see some idiots ghost-riding a bus.

- Schmidtopolis, on 07/02/2009, -3/+16My rents is $675 a month.
***** I hate that term. It reminds me of that guy who never really did anything wrong to you, but you just want to punch him right in the face. - Barackalypse, on 07/02/2009, -4/+16That's almost as sad as what happened to gymnast Shawn Johnson who had to be put down after an injury:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMsLg4jqlJw - handheldchimp, on 07/02/2009, -1/+13I hope I never see anything like that happen in my life. That's just horrible :(
- nyxerebos, on 07/02/2009, -0/+12Yes. Schoolchildren are made to pull them round the track. The betting is really on the kids, since the dogs weigh much the same.
- fuzzybutton, on 07/02/2009, -1/+13I worked for the West Palm Beach Humane Society as a night emergency driver and maintenance. Greyhounds came in all the time and were all labeled PTS (put to sleep) and not allowed to be put up for adoption. That was in the early 70's and I thought all that changed when a young girl who worked there told everyone to go to hell and took one home. As it turns out it made a wonderful pet and I thought she made a stand against PTS and to this day I thought it was illegal to put a dog down because it didn't win races; I guess I was wrong. Just couldn't do it at the Humane Society.
Young lady about 58 now, if you are out there say hello.
Their reasons for PTS were many, bite, uncontrollable, kill small animals, etc., everything but not a winner. - InfiniteNothing, on 07/02/2009, -0/+8There are a million other ways to get injured. It's just not safe to race around a mechanical whirring thing in a tight little circle. Broken hocks are common. You could also simply be knocked down and get trampled.
The only true safe thing to do is to end this barbaric sport. Dogs shouldn't die these sort of deaths just for our own entertainment. - Navicerts, on 07/02/2009, -1/+8Horse racing too I assume? Actually there are a ton of entertainment industries that use animals. Maybe you are right and we can get rid of them (all?). An alternative is to simply enforce animal protection laws.
In the article when they talked about the house of dogs being locked up with no food or care for a month (and then they were caught) the authorities did NOTHING. OK, they issues a "warning". I would say they should take all of the dogs away that same day and issue a warning at a minimum are at least check back in 24 hours to see the the problem is solved. - InfiniteNothing, on 07/02/2009, -1/+8Basically, you're arguing that the right of the human to be entertained outweighs the right of a dog to be treated humanely. That's just not right.
- marytormey, on 07/01/2009, -5/+12 A simple safety feature could prevent this from happening again.
- djphilos, on 07/02/2009, -0/+6If this happens a lot then why arent the lures built so that they can raise up and down?
- blackgt93, on 07/02/2009, -0/+6It's about ***** time this got some attention.
- sneakyness, on 07/01/2009, -3/+8I'm kind of mad somebody dug this down because it was longer than 10 words.
Really, they're awesome dogs. They're smart, but their vision isn't always the best. - Trocveth, on 07/02/2009, -0/+5Rents as in Parents. Its for kids too cool to say I live at home with Mom and Dad.
- djphilos, on 07/02/2009, -1/+6Jumping collisions would be awesome!
- graemee, on 07/02/2009, -1/+6New Hampshire races dead ones?
- aari13, on 07/02/2009, -0/+5Oh jesus.....
- iletumi, on 07/02/2009, -0/+5Thanks for finding the race that's spoken about in the article.
- Navicerts, on 07/02/2009, -0/+4I would have to know what normal procedure is when a dog falls behind. I assume this is something that happens more than once a week. If it is someone responsibility to make sure the dog gets off the track perhaps that person didn't do their job. Perhaps there is no mechanism for slowing it down. Perhaps it was simply too late to slow it down (it was a short track).
I'm curious what safety feature you had in mind? Something to slow the thing down after a dog falls behind I assume? Another idea is to make it so that the thing can just lift up a few feet to pass over the dog. - yournightmare, on 07/02/2009, -0/+4As a native Floridian I can tell you that no, they won't end dog racing. There's at least 15 dog tracks in Florida, with three within a 20-minute drive from me. I don't go to the races, never have been to the races, and never plan on going to the races. But it's deeply ingrained in Florida culture and there would be a massive outcry if they tried to ban it.
- RudeTurnip, on 07/02/2009, -1/+5Jesus Christ you sound like a douchebag using that word....buried.
- pault107, on 07/02/2009, -0/+4Greyhounds are one of the breeds that are known as sighthounds.
"Sighthounds, also called gazehounds, are hounds that primarily hunt by speed and sight, instead of by scent and endurance as scent hounds do."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sighthound
That said, I've noticed my Greyhounds sight isn't particularly great. Perhaps their sight deteriorates with age quicker than other breeds. - DrunkenMick, on 07/02/2009, -3/+7This reminds me of a incident at the Garden State Racetrack (Before it was torn down) many many years ago.
Myself and a group of friends were at the track (The only legal betting in NJ you can do at 18) betting on races. During one of the races one of the horses goes down and throws the jockey. We all somewhat felt bad, especially Ted who bet on the horse that went down. We then see them erecting a hospital ER type curtain thing around the horse. We realize then they're going to euthanize the horse right there on the track.
So about 15 minutes goes by and we see them load the horse onto a truck type thing and drive it off the track. No less than 2 minutes later we hear an overhead announcement:
"Tonight only, $2 cheese steaks! Get them while they’re fresh!"
I almost died laughing. - Apocrypha, on 07/02/2009, -1/+4Dog racing is no better than dog fighting IMO. It needs to be banned for good. Humans are a despicable lot.
- MacEnvy, on 07/02/2009, -1/+4I actually don't currently own a Mac, though I do have a Hackintosh I built in VMWare Server running on my PC laptop.
But your comment is really stretching for a tenuous grasp on a point, anyway. - Treason, on 07/02/2009, -1/+4did he die?
- aneirin, on 07/02/2009, -4/+7what, no video?
- Hellahulla, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3My rents is €300 a month.
But seriously, what does he mean, his landlord's dog? Is it young person terminology? - Apocrypha, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3Anyone who habitually abuses ANY animals should suffer the same fate.
- inactive, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3Why didn't they put a sprung hinge on that thing? They made it a strait up sweeper, like running a truck past a sidewalk full of people with a giant flag pole hanging out the side.
- InfiniteNothing, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3Yes. It's an amazing sight to watch 70 lbs clear 4-5 ft in the air. I've also heard of one catching a bird in mid air. They definitely have the muscle power to jump very high.
- laofmoonster, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2=(
- apexweb, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2We have had ex racing and unwanted greyhounds and lurchers for the past 18 years and they are very easy to care for and dont need long walks as most people seem to think.
There are several groups here in the UK who are trying to get racing banned and they have been able to get some race tracks closed but there are still far too many still open.
Currently got 4 dogs, one ex racing greyhound and 3 lurchers.
The worst country I have seen for animal cruelty is Spain where they hang their dogs or cut off their ears and dump them when they are no good for their "sport".
http://www.greyhoundaction.org.uk/ispain.html dont look if you cant stand cruelty to animals. - pault107, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2I'm with you on the tail thing.
Greyhounds are a wonderful breed - I took in a retired race dog and she is the most loving of dogs.
Surprisingly, greyhounds are fairly relaxed and enjoy spending most of their time sleeping. They have their 'funny five minutes' every now and then where they go hyper, but it's rare.
They're the second fastest animal on the planet, yet they're known as 45mph couch potatoes.
I'd recommend taking in a greyhound to anyone, you won't regret it, and due to their couch potatoe mentality they don't need a huge living area. - blackgt93, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2I have two Grey's of my own, both rescues from the track here in KC. A 78 lb Female and a 95 lb male.
If you've never considered adopting a Greyhound you should get your head checked. They are one of the best breeds out there.
Also, ban Greyhound racing. - bringitdownnow, on 07/02/2009, -1/+3Once again, an alternative weekly publishes an amazing piece of investigative journalism. What I read week after week in my city's alt weekly is typically more informative, written better, and without a corporate wire editor butting in. Long live the free press.
- JJTucker, on 07/02/2009, -3/+5My wife and I have two retired greyhounds. They're beautiful dogs and wonderful friends, and we will always have greyhounds in our home.
It's ***** horrible what happens to some of those dogs and I hope anyone who abuses a greyhound dies a painful death from cancer of the head. - Silentnite85, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2I have a Boxer/German Shepard who's tail feels like Tony Harding waiting for me in a parking lot. Baseball bats are made softer than his tail.
- jive_turkey, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2When I read the title, I thought it was going to be an article about people racing Greyhound Buses. I was totally expecting a sweet picture of a big ol' Greyhound bus doing a wheelie.
Damn - HavocXphere, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2RTFA.
- rgf207, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2you, sir, are a douche-bag
- Apocrypha, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2That doesn't change anything at all. Dog racing is still animal cruelty.
- Apocrypha, on 07/02/2009, -1/+3Yes, it is. They are all complicit by their association.
