The hamster eating pencils have failed!!!! - aurorous, on 11/06/2009, -0/+5He wasn't trying to eat the pencil. He was trying to stuff it in his cheek so he can carry it home and chew on it later. Hamsters have cheek pouches which they specifically use to carry food back to their nest. Hamster are pretty smart, give him time and he'll figure out he has to gnaw the pencil into smaller pieces in order to carry the pencil home.
I do the same thing with my pet hamster I give her saltine crackers which are almost half as long as she is. She'll carry it around clumsily until she gnaws it down into smaller bits. - krisdahl, on 11/06/2009, -0/+5Same thing happened to me when I tried to eat a telephone pole.
