- keithwired, on 03/18/2009, -10/+115a) because it's someone elses property that they invested a solid amount of money in not considering training and upkeep
b) because cows are killed in a more humane fashion with a fatal blow to the skull which is basically instantaneous death
take a look at the 5th picture in the slideshow, you see that mound of red ***** by its neck, thats froathed foamy blood because the killer is a ***** retard and doesn't know how to cut the jugular properly without slicing the windpipe. That animal was on the ground for a couple of minutes trying to breathe making that foamy mound until it died, pretty horrific.
Thats why this is different. - radiofrequency, on 03/18/2009, -8/+69The only thing gruesome about this is that poachers are killing other people's pets.
- b3and1p, on 03/18/2009, -42/+101How is this different than eating a cow again?
- zad1, on 03/18/2009, -2/+53Although I have never tasted horse meat, I don't think eating horse is wrong.
But kidnapping other people's horse and slaughtering them in unsanitary and unprofessional way is just wrong. - zephc, on 03/18/2009, -6/+53Concession Man: Get your piping hot horse burgers, horse fries, horse cakes and shakes. We got tongue, straight from the horse's mouth.
Leela: Hmmmmm.
Hermes: It all sounds good.
Concession Man: All our horses are 100% horse-fed for that double-horse "juiced-in" goodness.
Leela: I'll have the cholesterol-free omelet with horse-beaters.
Concession Man: And you, sir? How can I horse you?
Hermes: I'll have a horse Coke.
Concession Man: Horse Pepsi okay?
Hermes: Neigh. - diggmehard, on 03/18/2009, -16/+45killing horse is gruesome and killing any other animal or bird for food is okay!!
- blackfox026, on 03/18/2009, -1/+24Don't pretend you never drive through Wendy's...
- inactive, on 03/18/2009, -2/+23Why is it illegal to sell horse for food?
- ayeroxor, on 03/18/2009, -6/+27Dear Knee-jerkers: I believe he was asking why it was made illegal, thus creating a now-thriving black market.
It's a great question. Why does the ***** government insist on pushing it's giant ***** nose into other peoples' business? I've never eaten horse in my life and probably never will, but it can't be denied that if the government had left the regulated horse meat industry alone, this would probably not be happening on the same scale. - rancemo, on 03/18/2009, -5/+25So the problem is not eating horses, it's the prohibition of eating horses...
- chesterogilvie, on 03/18/2009, -2/+22Why is horse meat illegal in the US? Any good reason besides "they are our buddies?" This wouldn't happen if we didn't create a black market.
- aalmeida259, on 03/18/2009, -5/+23"You May Be Eating Stolen Horse"
yes, because the majority of people reading this are illegal horse eaters. - wakeb791, on 03/18/2009, -8/+26I've eaten horse.
Just sayin. - JCEEZ, on 03/18/2009, -0/+17While stealing a horse (or anything) is bad, what's the big deal with eating horse meat?
It may not be your cup of tea, but some places its normal i.e. Japan. - theberlindoctor, on 03/18/2009, -1/+18Anyone get the impression that local news channels are like that kid in school who was always starved for attention so much so that they would do gross ***** just to get it? Yea..
- Samurai77, on 03/18/2009, -2/+18FYI there are two horse slaughterhouses in Texas of all places, of course they send the meat out of country.
- MadOgre, on 03/17/2009, -36/+52Poachers caught doing this... they should be slaughtered in similar manner.
- ProfessorRiffs, on 03/18/2009, -10/+25Cows are ok, though, cuz they're ugly.
- jasdf, on 03/18/2009, -0/+14So have I, it was on the menu and I wanted to be able to say that I have eaten horse before. This comment is the payoff for eating it.
- DangerCollie, on 03/18/2009, -2/+16I'm not sure why this isn't being addressed by creating a legal and USDA inspected process for human consumable horse meat. If it sells for $20/pound, it would seem there's a market for it. I have a problem with this incident only because the animals were stolen, not because they were eaten.
We have a similar problem around here getting goat meat. Getting it processed at a USDA inspected facility is hard because beef producers pretty much run the USDA and the processing plants owe their existence to cattle producers.
We need to find a solution, not just for horses and goats, but all sorts of exotic meats. Deer, reindeer, elk, oxen, pheasant, quail, ostrich, there are many types of meat available which are better for you than beef. But it's difficult to legally get them to market. - LtAction, on 03/18/2009, -8/+20There's something vaguely familiar about those photos.. They sort of resemble every animal that has been slaughtered for food ever.
Huh. I didn't know horses were more important- color me confused :D - manicleek, on 03/18/2009, -1/+13or maybe legally eating horse meat that they don't realise has come from a stolen horse?
- NoobpwnYa, on 03/18/2009, -2/+14The question is:
How is this different from eating dog? - julian02392, on 03/18/2009, -1/+121.) The animals we kill for food aren't people's pets that they use their money to purchase and grow bonds with.
2.) I'm pretty sure slaughter houses do it in a cleaner and less painful way.
How would you feel if someone broke into your house while you were sleeping, slit your dogs neck, cut it to pieces for meat and left the body scraps in your living room for you to find when you wake up? - kelmaster1, on 03/18/2009, -3/+14ah yes, typical mindset. Not that I'm saying this was justified, hell no, and the fact it was a pet horse is terrible and sad. But come on...
- inactive, on 03/18/2009, -8/+19true, but people probably wouldn't resort to this if selling horse meat for consumption was legal
- ionelementz112, on 03/18/2009, -1/+12The taco place by me refuses to say the word "beef." I can order a "chicken taco," but when I try to order a "beef taco," they always repeat "meat taco," with a strange emphasis on the word "meat."
- c0ncept, on 03/18/2009, -1/+11@bjornski
FTA:
"The sale of horse meat for human consumption is illegal in the U.S."
According to the article, it makes it clear that selling horse meat is illegal. The foreign population who is used to eating horse buy the meat. So it's built into it's own little category of the black market. - kelmaster1, on 03/18/2009, -0/+10Horse meat is one of those taboo things European/American culture has developed over the years. It's interesting how we see cows as stupid yet Hindu's revere cows as sacred beings in a higher respect than we do for horses. Some people like to attribute human like emotions with animals and many people have done that and swear by it. Many people (in the world) feel the same way about cows. It's just a matter of food source, as people we like to degrade things so that we feel ethical in performing an action like killing. The mind convinces itself very easily.
This sounds sick, but I always kind of like these articles just because of all the interesting perspectives. - flashingcurser, on 03/18/2009, -1/+11Two important things remember: Theft of someones property, including horses, is theft regardless of sentimentality. All animals that are going to be killed for food should be killed in the most humane way possible.
Beyond that, why not use horses as a food source? Seems a waste to let it rot in the ground. Especially when horse has broken leg, suffers from joint pain from old age, or is part of a herd of feral horses that's being culled. - rivalius13, on 03/18/2009, -0/+10Same here. In France. Asked for steak, apparently it was horse steak. Tasted like beef as far as I remember.
- Paulorific, on 03/18/2009, -0/+10Birds are animals.
- inphu510n, on 03/18/2009, -1/+10Yeah I'm really just wondering why using horses for meat is illegal in the US other than "because they're cute" or some other "ethical" reason.
- eSentrik, on 03/18/2009, -0/+9I recently bought horse meat from a local Dutch store for my mother who enjoys it as a delicacy. There is nothing wrong with eating horse meat, but when the horse is stolen and killed so brutally we have an issue.
- Antz0rz, on 03/18/2009, -1/+9Poacher meat! Yum!
..No - inactive, on 03/18/2009, -4/+12Horse meat is a delicacy in some countries.
- slickrocktrail, on 03/18/2009, -4/+11Horses are people too!
- danr2c2, on 03/18/2009, -1/+8Yeah, I eat meat, but still this is pretty bad. However, we should look at the industry overall and make sure that animals are not suffering needlessly.
- BonJoevi, on 03/18/2009, -1/+8A horse is a horse, of course, of course.
- bjornski, on 03/18/2009, -2/+9@nesagwa
Wrong. - Oshi, on 03/18/2009, -1/+8"From Race Horse to Main Course"
Who comes up with this crap? - HyphySoul, on 03/18/2009, -3/+9Well that's a sad story to start my day off...but I'm feeling a prime-rib steak at lunch though.
- kelmaster1, on 03/18/2009, -3/+9the point isn't horse meat, it's that this was someone's pet and it was stolen. It's the same thing as stealing a cow from a Hindu person (fun fact: Hindu's view cows as sacred animals). Cultural perspective is another point, but stealing a pet is just wrong.
- Ommatidia, on 03/18/2009, -0/+6Just unblocking their scripts.
If you're going to use NoScript, at least learn how to use it. - Amshel, on 03/18/2009, -2/+8kelmaster1: race horses are not pets. More commonly than not, they are "destroyed" (destroyed is a word used for property btw, which shows a lack of respect for their lives) when they are unable to race any longer.
keithwired: I suggest you search for videos of cows being boiled alive. You see, some of them are conscious after they have been "bolted" and had their throats cut. They go to the boiling station usually 2-3 minutes after the neck-cutting stage, (it makes the fur easier to remove, and drowns them) and some of them are very aware of what's happening.
Seeing a cow hanging upside and struggling as it is slowly moved along and lowered into boiling water...that's an image that sticks with you. - inactive, on 03/18/2009, -7/+12Those poor photos!
- ayeroxor, on 03/18/2009, -0/+5Cuz the other meat industries paid their representatives to say so.
- JCEEZ, on 03/18/2009, -0/+5in semi-defense of the taco place, beef taco probably is Carne Asada, which means "roasted meat"
- radiofrequency, on 03/18/2009, -0/+5It probably shouldn't be illegal to use any animal for meat, but killing somebody's pet for meat is wrong on many levels. The reason horse meat is less accepted than beef or pork is because horses serve other practical purposes like transportation, as beasts of burden, etc. Pigs, cows, not so much.
- Velvolver, on 03/18/2009, -0/+5Bloody neck foam isn't normal for humane slaughter. Now where's my stupid colored marker.
