That is the definition of badass. - rbarnes, on 06/22/2009, -0/+17"He was a quiet shark. Pretty much kept to himself. I never would have dreamed he was capable of this."
- Pyehole, on 06/22/2009, -6/+17Huh, I've never heard of a predator referred to as a serial killer. Serial killers kill because they are sick, predators kill because they need to eat. There is a world of difference between the two. Very poor choice of words on the part of the BBC.
- i4ybrid, on 06/22/2009, -0/+11I don't blame them. Seals are fat, kinda like pigs of the ocean.
...mmmmm sea bacon... - trer, on 06/22/2009, -0/+9A SHARK ATE ME! A *****' SHARK ATE ME!

- inactive, on 06/22/2009, -0/+4This is the most irresponsible piece of journalism ever. Almost as bad as "shark week" and other fear mongering. Sharks are an Apex predator and they have to eat so get the ***** over it. Ohh and those poor shark attack victims right? ***** you. They are swimming where sharks feeds and it's 100% their own fault.

- vagrantwade, on 06/22/2009, -0/+2Wait...wait...let me get this straight. So these sharks are going after these seals, who happen to be the shark's primary source of food?
WTF gives them the right? Seriously. - jjesusfreak01, on 06/22/2009, -0/+2Worst part is, this guy is getting tons of grant money to be an idiot.
- cygnus2112, on 06/22/2009, -0/+2Shark says, "Mmm... tastes like human!"
You're gonna need a bigger boat. - jba68, on 06/22/2009, -1/+3still asinine to compare the two. Sharks eat for food. Ole Ted Bundy killed because he got off on it....

- LooterMcBeer, on 06/22/2009, -0/+1Great now PETA will go and try to talk to the sharks to get them to stop killing the seals.
I guess on the bright side Jessica Alba might get mad at them and stop pasting shark posters all over Oklahoma City...... - greencoat, on 06/22/2009, -0/+1SHARKS IN A MONTHER FUNKEN POOL
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMwmqp3GLMc - inactive, on 06/22/2009, -0/+1actually I heard seal tastes more like duck.
- inactive, on 06/22/2009, -0/+1but when you introduce relgion to animimals the animals like to hurt other animals becuase their animal god does not like anyother animals besides them.
- aoki5, on 06/22/2009, -4/+5i dont think they can be serial killers because they're brain doesnt understand what it is doing... personificiation of animals is not a good thing b'c they are not people
- Lunarparcel, on 06/22/2009, -0/+1Kinda hard to define this as "serial killer", but I guess it makes a better headline than strategic predatory instincts.
But dugg anyway.....for Hammerschlag. - Squeetard, on 06/23/2009, -0/+1Except, the shark doesn't give a shhit whether or not it gets caught doing it.

- declan69, on 06/22/2009, -0/+1In other news, HUMANS serial killers of chicken, pigs, cows, lambs, vegetables (Peta says they have feelings too)!!!!! Everybody PANIC!!!
- FuZi0nDET, on 06/23/2009, -0/+1This article is kind of pointless. I mean really, an animal that has been on this earth for longer than the whole of humanity, and most of our distant ancestors has human like behaviors? If anything it is the other way around and shows just how devolved serial killers really are. In the end should any one be surprised that sharks learn through trial and error? Do you think they'd still be around if they didn't?
- scarwars, on 06/22/2009, -0/+1You forgot about The Beltway sniper attacks?

- CrazedLeper, on 06/22/2009, -1/+1Feel free to disagree but is it starting to seem that "white serial killers" is a constant in nature?
- inactive, on 06/22/2009, -0/+0lol idiot. So if two things aren't exactly they same they can't be compared. Dur dur dur.
- inactive, on 06/22/2009, -0/+0"grarwrg, i say big words because my penis got even smaller and i don't understand how the interwebs work."
- rbarnes, on 06/22/2009, -0/+0OK, I'm not trying to make waves here (no pun intended), but I'm betting that this is, in fact, not the most irresponsible piece of journalism ever (Google "Dewey Defeats Truman"). That said, I agree with your core point. Swim with sharks, get eaten, earn a Darwin Award.
- adavis99, on 06/22/2009, -0/+0The sharks are eating...and they tend to eat where there is food.
What the hell does this have to do with serial killers? Dur Dur Dur... Dur. - inactive, on 06/22/2009, -0/+0dur dur dur, please look up "premeditated". The article doesn't focus motive you dumb *****. What are you, retarded?
Get told bitch. - adavis99, on 06/22/2009, -0/+0agreed.
- elsimer, on 06/22/2009, -1/+1fta: That suggests that the sharks use a premeditated hunting strategy akin to that used by some human serial killers.
In other words, serial killers are known to use premeditated strategies for finding their victims (not always geographical strategies, but in many cases it is). So do great whites. - YourNameHere1, on 06/23/2009, -0/+0I thought this article was very lame too..... but when you said, "that people get attacked where sharks feed is 100% their fault"..... that is a bit wrong.
For example, the Great White shark that killed that swimmer last spring in San Diego county: http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/04/25/ca.shark.attack/i ...
Many of these reported attacks happen at beaches that don't have large seal/elephant/sea lion populations: http://www.sharkresearchcommittee.com/pacific_coas ...
..... like all of the sightings that have been happening in the Malibu/Sunset area, or the ones that were seen at Trestles or any of the other So Cal spots.
If you're surfing in Nor Cal at breaks like Goat Rock (that spot is near the mouth of the Russian River with hundreds of elephant seals basking on the beach), or if you surf up in Humboldt or Mendocino when creeks are flowing with salmon, or if you paddle out in the Red Triangle at those deep water reef/shelf breaks near Año Nuevo..... then you are definitely putting yourself out in the hunting grounds and it is very risky and can be sort of scary when surfing in those breaks.
I've surfed a lot of those scary spots up in Humboldt/Mendocino/Sonoma that I've already mentioned and the only Great Whites I have seen were at Ocean Beach San Francisco at beach breaks that I used to feel very safe at compared to the places just south of there like Davenport reefs, Waddell reefs, or the deep water beach breaks at Montara.
I think I had actually saw the same shark twice since it was only 2 weeks apart and basically in the same area of Noriega St the first time and Sloat Ave the second time. (the first time I saw it I was duck diving a wave with my eyes open and I saw the body and tail of it swimming away from me about 10 feet away, the second time I was sitting on my board in pretty shallow water and I saw the entire tail of it wag back and forth in the air as the rest of the shark body went through a small wave about 30 yards away, I could see the white bottom of it)
In my 22 years of surfing I have surfed some beaches that are definitely populated with seals, elephant seals, sea lions, or salmon..... but there are places like L.A. or Orange County that don't have elephant seals or creek mouths with salmon swimming out and only have the occasional seal and you will still hear about the occasional shark attack or shark sighting.
Great White Sharks of the North American Pacific are known to travel between the deep water trenches of the Catalina islands for breeding and then north to the Red Triangle for feeding (the Red Triangle is from Santa Cruz to San Francisco and out to the Farallon islands where a lot of those shark week programs are filmed).....
There is whole lot of coast line in between the Catalinas and the Farallons and sharks go very far north of the Farallons, and some are known to go much further south than the Catalinas and are seen in So Cal and San Diego.
The part about this article that I didn't like was the part where it made it seem that 100m is not being close to the location of the seals. Obviously sharks have to hide while hunting prey otherwise the seals would all be on the beach barking and they would never swim out to the unprotected places for food. It's the same thing with a lion stalking a herd of antelope that watches the herd from a distance before seeing some game it can catch. I assume that a Great White that is hiding in some deep water trench 100meters away can feel the vibrations in the water of the seals fishing. They can probably sense when the seals start to get brave and swim out to the unsafe and unprotected deep water areas where the sharks can get them.
The only logic to your statement is that any place in the ocean can be a sharks feeding ground. It may not be it's regular hunting spot, it could just be traveling from one place to another and see a kayacker, a surfer, or a swimmer and considered it a potential easy meal that it didn't even have to hide from. - inactive, on 06/23/2009, -0/+0Yes, a pure sign of brilliance, having a youtube clip do your bidding. What, can't think of what to say on your own? Were you never educated, retard? Hahaha, what a epic fail on your part. Bravo!
- Scopitone, on 06/22/2009, -2/+1Any time a doctor or a conservationist demands we begin protecting Great whites, I think of this clip from Young Frankenstein http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pu1DMSqTLyk
