- inactive, on 08/21/2008, -6/+112They feel emotional pain exactly like we do. Anyone who denys that now is an *****.
- Macrophage, on 08/20/2008, -14/+106Some people claim animals have no soul...i'd say this proves they have more than
many people do.
PEACE
John - Cararan, on 08/20/2008, -5/+91That's just sad.
- Hetman, on 08/20/2008, -19/+88There is no possible way we could share a common ancestor with such a horrible beast. They are so unlike us.
- thecosmicpope, on 08/21/2008, -2/+47"She had a female baby in 2007 that now lives at the Stuttgart Zoo. "
Well maybe she refuses to let go of the baby because the last time she let go of one, they took it away from her and put it in a different Zoo. Poor thing. - Caligatio, on 08/21/2008, -1/+42Sadly it appears Gorilla mothers are actually more caring than some of their human counterparts
- NaziHatinChimp, on 08/21/2008, -0/+41I remember fondly as a kid watching a video on chimps and that a young chimps mom died. The group went on but the young chimp stayed with it's mother for three weeks until it starved to death.
And people are going to tell you animals don't have feelings. - shauntacular, on 08/21/2008, -4/+39Is there anything sadder than a animal that was taken away from it's home, locked in a cage and now carrying around a dead baby?...Maybe Titanic.
- Mootabolife, on 08/21/2008, -1/+31Ya, I don't see her throwing her kid in the dumpster.
- egeo2000, on 08/21/2008, -2/+30She probably just doesn't want to lose yet another baby. Bring back her living daughter and she might be more willing to give up the dead one.
- RaspberryTang, on 08/20/2008, -11/+36I have no heart but I'll digg this for ya!
- angelad, on 08/21/2008, -0/+23Probably shouldn't have clicked on this, as I'm about three weeks from giving birth myself. This was painful. To the naysayers, this isn't a case of "dumb" animal doesn't know any better. In the animal kingdom, mothers typical nurture their young for 18 months, so if their child dies before then, they will mourn. This is evidence. It could also be that she doesn't want humans or other animals she might see as "predator" to come and take her baby.
- EggAndMuffin, on 08/21/2008, -0/+19And we have mother who starves her baby to death because
he won't say "amen" at a dinner table,
or parents doing terrible, terrible things to their children
There's a Chinese saying that goes "虎毒不食子" (hu3 du2 bu4 shi2 zi3).
'Not even the dangerous/evil tiger would eat its own babies.'
I can't help but think sometimes we human are worse than animals.
I hope those heartless parents would read stories like this
I really do. and I hope they feel like crap for what they did to their kids. - Bradl3y, on 08/21/2008, -1/+18An article about this hit the Digg front page yesterday too. In that article, it said this is her second loss, she was rejecting her first child for reasons unknown to scientists. Due to the neglect, they had to take the baby from the mother and provide care for it.
- Eezyville, on 08/21/2008, -2/+19:*(
- SupaFlyTNT, on 08/21/2008, -0/+17What does keeping a dead baby have to do with natural selection? The baby lost in natural selection; this is clearly an emotional reaction to the loss of the baby.
- IphtashuFitz, on 08/21/2008, -0/+16I think Hetman was being a bit facetious.
- zeospike, on 08/21/2008, -0/+15A beautifully crafted response from ep53, oozing with cack spelling and piss poor grammar like a proper believer would. I commend your sense of mock bathos. Only bit missing was "WAEK UP AMERICA!!"
- Murdats, on 08/21/2008, -1/+15I doubt you feel emotion in the exact some way I do.
that was a very vague claim. - suckanucka, on 08/21/2008, -2/+16I have no dead baby but I'll digg ya!
- scribat, on 08/21/2008, -1/+14What a dumbass comment. Sad thing is though there's loads of people on the internet (like yourself) who would probably do that and find it funny as hell. Dick.
- chadsterrr, on 08/21/2008, -0/+13Well, good thing my day was ruined before I read this.

My bets are that he is a home schooled religious fundamentalist, with an education level on par with a fifth grader. - inactive, on 08/21/2008, -3/+14I don't think he meant a soul in the religious definition, just consciousness.
We're also programmed to do everything we do by natural selection. - captainanndor, on 08/21/2008, -0/+11I noticed that too. "She had a female baby in 2007 that now lives at the Stuttgart Zoo."
WTF? Don't most apes raise their offspring for several years before having more? I want to say at least 3?
Baby couldn't have been more than a year old before it was taken from her; that's got to have some sort of psychological effect on her, making her more protective of future offspring.
Google info:
"Pregnancy lasts for 8.5 months."
"A female reaches sexual maturity at about age 8, but usually doesn’t have her first baby until at least 10."
'...rarely leaving arms of its mother in the first six months."
"During the second year it becomes more independent and begins playing with others, interacting with the silverback, learning to feed itself."
"At 3-4 years juvenile gorillas become relatively independent and begin building their own nests next to their mothers."
So, let's see here. Mama gorilla is 11. Pregnancy is 8.5 months. So she was barely into standard breeding age, had a baby, then got pregnant again before she was even done breastfeeding the first one?? Which they then took away from her well before the baby was even independent of her
She's probably going to flip out and either discard or murder her next offspring. - inactive, on 08/21/2008, -0/+10"***** the scientists and there lies."
Well, I'd definitely say you have about as thorough a grasp on grammar as you do on science. Epic. - nem0, on 08/21/2008, -2/+12How about a sad clown carrying a sad puppy with huge sad eyes,
- hangman16, on 08/21/2008, -0/+10"In the animal kingdom, mothers typical nurture their young for 18 months"
Maybe in some species...but in many it's longer and in some mothers don't take care of the young at all. - SeldonPsych, on 08/21/2008, -1/+11video of the same interesting behavior observed in wild chimps:
http://www.pri.kyoto-u.ac.jp/ai/bossou_video/video ...
warning: very sad video - inactive, on 08/21/2008, -0/+9So God made scientists and science.
Self-defeating arguments for the stupid! - inactive, on 08/21/2008, -1/+10They're gorillas, not white trash.
- lisaawesome, on 08/21/2008, -0/+9You going to have a Digg baby!
- jehan60188, on 08/21/2008, -0/+8This behavior has been observed in the wild before. The mother will hold on to the baby until it's corpse literally rots so much that it falls apart, and can no longer be carried.
One retarded gorilla, I can believe. But not two. Especially not exhibiting such similar behavior. - Torx, on 08/21/2008, -3/+11Damper on my thursday morning.. thanks.
- inactive, on 08/21/2008, -0/+7It's a pretty huge jump from this story to that, so no.
- inactive, on 08/21/2008, -0/+7how about those who digg you down for a good reason?
- inactive, on 08/21/2008, -3/+10And yet millions of people visit zoos daily to support the removal of innocent animals from their natural habitats so that they can be caged and displayed for our amusement. Ignorant people throw rocks and pennies at the animals and wonder why the animals end up attacking the zookeepers. Do not say, "But if we didn't do that, then they'd be extinct!" This is not true. If we did not kill them for their pelts, they would not be endangered. If we did not destroy their habitats, they would not be endangered. If we did not kill them for sport, they would not be endangered. Scooping up the last two or three of each species and locking them in a cage is not "saving" them. It's prolonging their misery.
A long time ago there was a Calvin and Hobbs cartoon in which Calvin asked Hobbs if he wanted to go to the zoo with him. Hobbs asked him if it would be OK to visit the state penitentiary afterwards. Calvin thought about it and told his father he didn't want to go to the zoo afterall. I have not been to a zoo since and my children will never go to one. - DeadFox1, on 08/21/2008, -0/+7wow. that was worth waiting for. very sad indeed. thanks for the link!
- jn1167, on 08/21/2008, -0/+7Sad.. A mothers love is a mothers love. No matter what species you are.
- suckanucka, on 08/21/2008, -2/+9Stevetheexcessivelyliteral.
- RenoKb, on 08/21/2008, -0/+6I think you get buried because you act like a giant douche, and you play up being a victim of some comment system mob on the internet as if it's one of the great 21st century travesties.
Of course, I probably HBT'd. - Murdats, on 08/21/2008, -2/+8damn straight, its why over 50% of all pregnancies result in abortion.
oh wait... - Mithivh, on 08/21/2008, -0/+6most? wtf?
- pagalchu, on 08/21/2008, -0/+6That's what you call real love.
- ModernDayDarwin, on 08/21/2008, -0/+5No, I'm pretty sure you were buried for making a dumbass statement.
- DrPh0bius, on 08/21/2008, -0/+5Yeah, thats way dumber than putting it in a box, burying that box in the dirt and bringing flowers to lay where the corpse in the box is buried. Stupid monkey.
- JCPahl, on 08/21/2008, -0/+5Haha, you're so hardcore lol. (grow the ***** up)
- freshyill, on 08/21/2008, -1/+6Because with humans, even the best mothers only carry their dead children around for two, maybe three days, tops.
- samoan27, on 08/21/2008, -5/+10You have to justify that statement. Explain how mourning for the death of a child will help propagate your genetics. I can understand that caring for a child can perhaps increase the likelihood of it to survive thus propagating the species. But mourning for the death of a child is nothing but a hindrance to its breeding.
No I believe this is one of those circumstances that shows Darwin's Theory is an incomplete theory as natural selection offers no explanation for this. - inactive, on 08/21/2008, -1/+5This makes me feel sad. Makes me think that animals must feel love.
