Elephants On Path To Extinction By 2020?

sciencedaily.com — African elephants are being slaughtered for their ivory at a pace unseen since an international ban on the ivory trade took effect in 1989. But the public outcry that resulted in that ban is absent today, and a University of Washington conservation biologist contends it is because the public seems to be unaware of the giant mammals' plight.

  • WhiteRaven, on 08/02/2008, -1/+2I'll tell you why poaching is on the rise... supply and demand. The ban has limited the supply for many years and the value of the ivory is very very high.

    I'm not saying that ban is wrong necessarily, I'm just explaining that the reason it is becoming more difficult to enforce is because the incentive to poach is growing.
