Dogs and Dollars: What Pets Cost
divinecaroline.com — For the first time in my adult life, I became a pet owner. I am not a dog person, by nature, but have adjusted to the smells, the occasional puke, the jumping up on anyone who comes to the door, and the endless vacuuming of dog hair. As for the financial side of dog ownership, my husband and I have adopted a don’t-ask-don’t-tell policy.

- ElRaval, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1$635/yr for a Guinea Pig? At least you can collect a few bucks selling it for medical research when the kids grow tired of him.

- Angelix, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2It depends on your personal perspective. I have 2 lovely dogs and all the money we spent on them are worth it. They are already a part of my family and family comes first in life.
- gwinerreniwg, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1We have two Border Terriers (smaller dogs, about 17-20 lbs.). We spend approx $600/year in medical expenses (vet visits, medications, flea repellents, etc.), about $150/year on food, and likely about $400 or so on junk like leashes, collars, toys, treats, and other crap that just adds up throughout the year. On the benefit side, they provide us with hours of endless entertainment, company and companionship. The first year of pet ownership is very costly though - Several thousand between purchasing the dogs, crates, supplies, etc. Its probably obvious, but also bears mentioning that as your pet gets older those health-care costs increase. To help offset that, and keep them healthy, we tend to overspend on preventative care and high-quality feeds.
