- casbboy, on 01/12/2009, -5/+128That is awesome. Using traffic was one thing, but following crosswalks, very intuitive.
- jmarkow, on 01/13/2009, -0/+87Anyone else think of this?
http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/joshua_klein_on ... - algaeturd, on 01/13/2009, -1/+87This is SUPER old...just think how smart those ***** are by now.
- RoroCo, on 01/12/2009, -2/+76So long, and thanks for all the nuts...
- FirstDigg, on 01/12/2009, -8/+74Well I don't know about an invasion anytime soon, but you definitely can't say humans are the only ones who use tools anymore.
- ClevelandBrown, on 01/13/2009, -0/+43I ***** love crows.
- CkMaverick, on 01/13/2009, -0/+41I think that video clearly shows that humans are the tools and the crows are our overlords.
- AnOceanApart, on 01/12/2009, -4/+43Amazing! loved it...
- Roke, on 01/13/2009, -1/+36No, it's not intuitive. That's what makes the feat so remarkable. The crows are demonstrating advanced reasoning.
- Lockhart1, on 01/13/2009, -1/+34When the crows finally take over you'll wish you hadn't said that.
- LegendaryHitman, on 01/12/2009, -2/+31Hmmm...Hitchcock's "The Birds" was right...
- Enthuzler, on 01/12/2009, -13/+42I don't know about you. I for one welcome our new crow overlords.
- zaklampert, on 01/13/2009, -1/+29 this is the story that originally made me sign up for a digg account all those years ago.
i know no one else cares but ***** you. - inactive, on 01/13/2009, -1/+27i wouldn't think of it either. :(
but these are japanese crows. American crows... yeah, not so smart. - zeblith, on 01/13/2009, -2/+24Um, Otters + Flat Rocks?
- esaks, on 01/13/2009, -2/+24http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/joshua_klein_on ... Crow Vending machine
- Brododium, on 01/13/2009, -0/+21Nah, there's an extra three minutes (hidden) at the end of the segment, transcript reads as follows:
(David Attenborough voice)
"By dropping large stones through the windshields of cars passing underneath, the crow manages to cause a suitable collision in the traffic. Seizing the opportunity of fresh meat in the accident, the crow promptly feasts on slowly charring cadavers. Once full it leaves to repeat the process... elsewhere" - uevan, on 01/13/2009, -3/+21Right when I finally forget the bitch.
- bridgeyman, on 01/13/2009, -1/+18Well, we just turn around and use the birds for our benefit too. ;)

(Warning, long video with actual content in it, not appropriate for Digg) - tidu, on 01/13/2009, -1/+18onelikeseabass didn't read the comment, but we all did.
- onelikeseabass, on 01/13/2009, -1/+17*****, yea, I'm blind.
- inactive, on 01/13/2009, -0/+16David Attenborough is the greatest.
- NickLee808, on 01/13/2009, -0/+14What we have yet to realize is that scarecrows were invented by crows, fooling us humans into thinking that we created them. That way the crows can attack at night, while we're sleeping in peace because we believe the scarecrows are doing their job against the crows.
- TouchingWood, on 01/12/2009, -0/+12This crow has nothing on my pet toad that fetches and opens my beer bottles. ;)
- inactive, on 01/13/2009, -0/+12You are 100% incorrect. Crows not only have been documented using tools, but *shaping* them for a specific purpose.
Corvids (crows and their relatives) are among the smartest of all birds, and have been estimated to have intelligence of a very high order.
Using the environment to alter a foodstuff (letting cars crack your nuts) that could not be achieved otherwise is within the definition of tool use. - sixcrows, on 01/13/2009, -0/+12I've seen this many times. I think it is from David Attenborough's Life of Birds PBS documentary. I've always loved Crows. Brilliant creatures. There is a video, on YouTube I think, of a crow bending a stick to fish food out of a bottle, not only USING tools, but MAKING one first.
- houndeyex, on 01/13/2009, -0/+12You mean like in that movie Shooter? As in exactly like that movie Shooter?
- WriterSD, on 01/13/2009, -0/+12They evolved. There are many copies. And they have a plan.
- Mossman85, on 01/13/2009, -1/+122012....
- XZanatos, on 01/13/2009, -3/+13RACISM! First its all like, "Japanese people are all really smart." And now its their crows too. Will this prejudice ever end?
/humor - cryonix, on 01/13/2009, -0/+10Though old, I've observed local (Western Washington) crows use the same method of using the traffic to crack nuts. There is a word for it i cant think of at the moment, but its basically intelligence trends. Once the number of subjects that exhibit unique traits exceeds a threshold, a sudden boom in that trait appear across its population(s). In this case from Japan to Washington!
- inactive, on 01/13/2009, -1/+11Even Japan's crows are smarter.
- r0g3r, on 01/13/2009, -0/+10There's a video posted further down that shows a crow using a stick to get food out of a tube. Definitely tool users.
- peterdangit, on 01/13/2009, -0/+9Only if you don't like to be called one.
- azimir, on 01/13/2009, -1/+10He might have meant insightful or intelligent? Let's ask one of the crows, they'll probably know.
- piptheminkey, on 01/13/2009, -0/+8Dugg because Ted.com is the *****
- superherogirl, on 01/13/2009, -1/+9that's one way to bust a nut....
- jasonh1234, on 01/13/2009, -0/+8Clearly you've never had 20 of them outside your window at 5am with a Sunday morning hangover.
- theghoul, on 01/13/2009, -0/+8So... Scarecrows are now ineffective.
- r0g3r, on 01/13/2009, -0/+8Holy *****! Dugg.... that was bad ass.
- idontlikeyou2, on 01/13/2009, -1/+8I'd imagine you head will be full of crow beak marks.
- inactive, on 01/13/2009, -0/+7Several animal species have been documented using tools, often shaped for a purpose. Most of these are among the great apes.
- NickLee808, on 01/13/2009, -2/+9Fail. Read again.
- Igrift, on 01/13/2009, -0/+6After all their Science is more logical than ours
- aherman, on 01/13/2009, -0/+6Gear down, Turbo.
- inactive, on 01/13/2009, -0/+6Great Vid man, this website is definitely worth snooping around.
- inactive, on 01/13/2009, -0/+6And then collect your nuts in safety.
