Growing up I thought the one down the street was THE crazy cat lady. To lazy to cut her grass and when you would ride by on your bike there would be dozens of them looking through the grass at you. No one knew how many there were until she and a heart attack and they had to come pick up over 100 cats from her house. ***** gross

This is also not about people who rescue one or two cats, they "rescue" a ton because they can't stop. Are the cat ladies trying to spade a neuter all of their cats? Why are you bagging on the animal cop, he's probably more about animal safety and humane issues than the crazy cat ladies.

But who knows, maybe they are just lonely ladies who want to share their love with someone, and cats are the closest thing they'll have to that. She's definitely a hoarder: she's got a station wagon that is just full of junk to the brim except for the driver's seat.

- anotherjack, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1In some areas, people just dump their animals. All you need are a few like that to end up with a colony of 30 feral cats breeding away. There are crazy cat ladies and there are cat ladies. I'm not surprised the officer thinks a hoarder and a rescuer are the same- because his local rescuer isn't really a rescuer at all! It is sad that he has no experience of real cat rescue. There are some wonderful people out there taking care of other people's negligence. They are cat ladies, but not crazy.
Crazies will "rescue" as in trap and hoard. Cat ladies actually rescue - they trap, then they neuter/spay, and then the cats are returned to the wild. A cat lady will give a wild cat shelter and food if an outside cat, or maybe take it in if it is an abandoned housepet. A crazy cat lady will hunt down and capture ferals in cages. Both will call it "rescue" but one of them is just very sick. A rescuer is an excellent superfunctional person providing a service. A crazy cat lady is a creepy dysfunctional person providing a nuisance. It is *not* hard to tell the difference.
Crazy: has more cats than they can handle, and they are breeding more, and are overwhelmed by it. This person needs help.
Cat lady: has a small number of indoor cats, cares for a larger number of strays, and is usually up to the neck in vet bills. This person would appreciate a donation to the local Aspca to fund more neutering and hospital care. -
