- gberkshire, on 04/24/2009, -0/+27This is amazing. The underground world of horse dentistry...who knew?
- wannaBdug, on 04/24/2009, -0/+20This really can't be a real law can it? Too crazy.
- lindsayb, on 04/24/2009, -1/+19I still can't believe there is a whole organization devoted to lobbying for horse-teeth-filer's rights. So preposterous!!
- shoeless1542, on 04/24/2009, -1/+13I live in Oklahoma and apparently the legislators who wrote the law and pushed it are veterinarians. They just don't want these people to tap into their revenue. Surprise, surprise another case of shady politicians trying to line their pockets. Oh by the way it's illegal to do it doggy style in OK, come and get me coppers!!!!!!!!
- evisr8r, on 04/24/2009, -0/+12Weird subject yes. but it's the same old song and dance.
The practice has been performed by non-veterinarians for 30+ years now, like farm stores and such, it's really not hard to screw up. However, people who have money want more money and use their own wallets to bend politics.
This was just a "setting an example" case - borez, on 04/24/2009, -0/+9He was obviously bridging the gap by filling in between vets ( who need to seriously cap their salaries ) and horse doctors who can't pull their own weight. The industry needs to brace itself for more cases like this.
- cuoops, on 04/24/2009, -0/+8He's an anti-dentite.
- gbarger, on 04/24/2009, -1/+9This is really dumb. I could imagine some kind of animal legislation for this, but I imagine that this guy actually knows more about it than the run of the mill vet. As a major rodeo person (apparently...I don't really know anything about it), I'm sure he does care for the animals, it was probably one of his, so he's not going to do something to endager a horse that he cares about.
- Matt88, on 04/24/2009, -0/+8Why was he pulling out the teeth anyway, was the horse chomping down on him a bit hard?
- bwitty72, on 04/24/2009, -0/+8He wasn't arrested for Pulling teeth. He was "Floating" the horses teeth which is essentialy using a rasp to file down the sharp edges of the teeth. It doesn't even cause hardly any pain to the horse and there is no need even for medication for the procedure. An even more stupid reason to arrest him.
- docliberty, on 04/24/2009, -0/+8Cheers for government skewing of markets based on lobbies desiring to limit competition.
- borez, on 04/24/2009, -2/+8Woosh.
- Jokaroni, on 04/24/2009, -0/+6"No sir, I don't like it."
- RumpleForeskin3, on 04/24/2009, -0/+6Awesome title
- NoMercyGTP, on 04/24/2009, -1/+5I see what you did there...
- blah247, on 04/24/2009, -1/+5Doesn't matter what state you live in. All states have shady politicians, ridiculous laws and uneducated hicks.
- lupejunior, on 04/24/2009, -3/+6"Oh by the way it's illegal to do it doggy style in OK, come and get me coppers!!!!!!!!"
Nobody cares what you and your boyfriend do behind closed doors. - DirtyVicar, on 04/24/2009, -0/+3The irony here is Oklahoma's conservative majority are the ones who whine and cry about government regulation and lack of a "free market" when their wealthy corporate constituents get in trouble with the FTC and FCC.
- Arsenard, on 04/24/2009, -0/+3The law should be different. My experience is that too many professionals are not, and many amateurs are more adept than the pros!
- inactive, on 04/24/2009, -0/+3Their website brings back memories of the 90's:
http://www.oklahomaequinedentistrylaw.com/index.ht ... - thentro, on 04/24/2009, -0/+3This is a growing conflict in the Veterinary world, and a very interesting topic. What constitutes "veterinary medicine" is very broad as defined by law, and it comes into conflict with just about every other animal service above training and grooming.
I am really surprised to see this on Digg though! - christopherokc, on 04/24/2009, -0/+2The guy in the article graduated from Equine Dental school. They're treating him like a pedophile just because he isn't a DVM. This is an old story, too.
- mikemehak, on 04/24/2009, -0/+2Most vets are paid well enough and stay busy enough they don't have to bother themselves with dentistry. It's not a pleasant job and takes a great amount of strength and skill/practice.
In most (if not all) provinces and states it's required for a dentist to work under a vet. This is because most dentists don't carry malpractice insurance (it's not really fiscally possible). There are some vets/specialized dentists who do not require your vet present but they charge outrageous fees and are not necessarily better.
This makes it very difficult to find a good dentist. - jugheadjones, on 04/24/2009, -3/+4There's gold in them thar horse teeth.
- yambagel, on 04/28/2009, -0/+1This is actually really common these days. There was an unlicensed horse dentist working near where I grew up for many years before he got in trouble for it. It was kind of unfortunate, because he did a much better job than the local veterinarians.
- Skywise, on 04/24/2009, -2/+3I bet PETA is happy.
- cyberthief, on 04/24/2009, -0/+1The only reason to sedate a horse while floating their teeth is if the horse is jumpy and will not stand still. I have had all three of my horses teeth done and it is quick and painless. it cost me $75 per horse and if the would have needed sedation i would have had to have a vet come out and do it. I'm not sure what drugs he was caught using, but in the horse world you need a prescription for asprin (bute).
- acdcfanbill, on 04/24/2009, -1/+2In the last 20some years of owning horses, the only time anyone but the farrier worked on my horses teeth was when the vet happened to be out looking at a wound and was handy to do it. This law seems stupid to me too.
- gametavern, on 04/24/2009, -2/+3Griswold? Any relation to Clark?
- davidlitts, on 04/24/2009, -0/+1Borez your funny and they dont get it. i applaud you
- jervana, on 04/24/2009, -0/+1you eeeeeeediot!
- profesor, on 04/24/2009, -1/+2This can be serious. Like bwitty72 said, it's not always necessary to sedate a horse to do a simple float, but for some horses and some dental procedures it can be. A friend of mine is an equine vet, and she once had to help save a horse's life because a non-vet equine dentist gave a horse who only had one kidney an improper sedative. The law is bad - it should be that only vets can give controlled drugs such as sedatives, not that only vets can practice equine dentistry.
- jba68, on 04/24/2009, -2/+2what does Nike have to do with it
- hoffmann277, on 04/24/2009, -0/+0Really? Wow... they overcharge for what they do regardless of the wide and extensive education of animals they have. They are able to do so because of the low number of vets out there. Getting accepted into vet school in most places is harder than most medical and law school. They are overworked in alot of areas and to ease the workload they raise the cost of work.
Alot of farmers I know try to do much as possible themselves, whether in the field or in barn. Taking away the ability for a farmer to do this could devestate their wallet. They don't work or do things to their cattle(in this case, I'm in Wisconsin) without any knowledge of what they're doing. In alot of cases a vet has shown them what to do infact.
That's the rant about the rant I got from a friend applying to vet school. She's still waiting though... - nuketulsa, on 04/24/2009, -0/+0Yes I am from OKC and we all have horses and we play dentist with them all the time. You mean they DON'T do this in other states???
- jacson1999, on 04/24/2009, -3/+3Ok a horse is a farm animal, No different from a cow or a pig, and the root of this law is to prevent someone from putting down a farm animal. This world has gone nuts! What's next, outlawing hamburgers and bacon? I bet the PETA wackos are extactic about this.
My opinion is that IT"S A FREAKING HORSE, it's property it's no different then a car or a house or a chair and if the owner want's to modify it, or put it down why the heck should the gov be involved?
Again this world is going nuts a freaking horse is more protected then a human fetus.
When is the law coming out that we have to worship horses because they are so much greater then humans? Because you know I can't wait for that day! - BrokenVisage, on 04/24/2009, -1/+1Bronc rider? OJ?
- Smutterfly, on 04/24/2009, -2/+1.....
Oklahoma's so boring, people play dentist with horses for fun?
...there are no words to express my reluctance to ever move there. - inactive, on 04/24/2009, -5/+4Odd how the libtards constantly cried for 8 years about losing rights when in reality the rights we have lost are due to lame ass libtard dummycrats of late.
Let people take care of their own stuff and mind your own freaking business. - Balanced, on 04/24/2009, -3/+1Have you seen vet salaries lately? Form what I hear, they're not setting the world on fire. They tend to be one of the lower paid medical fields and require a pretty wide range of education.
