- Telionis, on 11/11/2009, -1/+13Ohh, poor bear (and poor baby alpacas). How is it the fault of the bear that the farmer didn't secure his property from natural predators? I hate it when farmers blame predators for doing what they're supposed to do - if a fox got your chicken, that's your fault for not securing the coop, not the fox's fault.
Furthermore, a .38 pistol? As in a 38 special revolver? Against a bear???? Haha, good luck. - TheVirus, on 11/11/2009, -0/+12IF YOU SEE THIS ANIMAL, PLEASE CONTACT CRIME STOPPERS: 1-877-577-TIPS. ALL TIPS ARE ANONYMOUS AND YOU MAY BE ELIGIBLE FOR A $1000 REWARD.

- fxu1989, on 11/11/2009, -1/+9I knew he was into interspecies sex, but I didn't think he'd do it with an alpaca... but at least we know he's still into babies.
- askantik, on 11/11/2009, -0/+7It was not a bear. The scientific consensus is that it was either http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chupacabra or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sasquatch

- NightEmber79, on 11/11/2009, -2/+6*CTRL-C Pedobear* *CTRL-V..... goddammit.....
- Telionis, on 11/11/2009, -2/+5Are you kidding me? The bear is not a sapient creature guided by a human sense of morality or decorum, why are you holding him accountable as though he were? If you live in bear country and you leave a taste roast-beef sandwich outside on a tree stump, it will likely get eaten and if it does, that's most certainly your own fault.
You can't possibly be so silly as to expect the bear to use introspection to decide whether or not it is "appropriate" for him to eat the unattended sandwich (or alpaca in this case). The bear doesn't even understand the concept of ownership, what would possibly possess him to not eat the tasty sandwich he was lucky enough to find? Do you expect him to stop and think to himself "you know, this has got to be someone else's sandwich, it wouldn't be right of me to eat it..."? LOL.
When you get cold after going out in 40° weather without a coat, do you by chance blame the viruses for being so unethical as to take advantage of your weakened state? Those little opportunistic bastards, have they no decency at all?!? - fanfablebig, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3I hate it when that happens.
- GeyserShitdick, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3Um, no one here or in the article suggests that the bear is sapient. The alpaca-man just doesn't like it when the bear steals his babbys - he didn't assign any sort of morality to the action.
- drewchapman, on 11/11/2009, -1/+4WE NEED TO DO WAY INSTAIN MOTHERS

- protogenxl, on 11/11/2009, -1/+3llama llama llama llama llama llama duck
- graywolfz10, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2yup thats exactly what Im talking about.
- Telionis, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2Agreed, a .38 is considered underpowered for use against humans. You cannot legally use it to hunt deer as such an underpowered round would be inhumane (state law). Using such a weapon against a bear is a terrible idea, and I doubt it could penetrate the skull of a black bear (their larger grizzly cousins have been known to resist .45 rounds to the skull).
- akchrs, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2"(and poor baby alpacas)."
Technically it's a Babby. - quegrawks, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2It's the alpacas fault for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. ***** alpacas
- Codename46, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2Rifle != Pistol
- johndavidjack, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2A friend of mine had his chicken coop raided by a black bear. They were inside a locked shed area, and the bear just broke through a very small window that had glass and wire fence around it, figured out it couldn't grab any chickens through the windo, so it ripped the exterior door off.
- graywolfz10, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2To bad bears can rip locked car doors clean off...
- dVerge, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2I think the pingpants beat all of you to it, if anything.
- worseforwine, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2Anyone ever been to Tamaqua? That alpaca was lucky..

- Hero0fTime, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1LEAVE THE BEAR ALONE!
- kbillar, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1Not to even mention all the picnic baskets they have been stealing!
- DeadPlasmaCell, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1Cruelty-free..really narrows your choices.
- ngmcs8203, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1You've seen the destruction a determined bear can do, right? What do you expect the farmer to do? Surround his farm with bear proof walls 10ft high? And yes, he shot the bear in the head with a 38. I would think bears are susceptible to bullet wounds to the skull.
- djmattmcg, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1Well, that's just great. You hear that, Ed? Bears. Now you're putting the whole station in jeopardy.
- necrosynthesis, on 11/11/2009, -1/+2I first read that as a 32. hunting rifle. Killing bears in VATS FTW!
- graywolfz10, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1Thats a good fact to know, but I think we are talking about instant kill and not bleed out.
Did you save the claws and pelt? - JediCorran, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1bears are like the grim reaper of the forest.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1Colbert was right all along!
- Divals, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1What are these 'bears' you speak of? Anything like Yao Guai?
- incywebb, on 11/15/2009, -0/+1mint sauce?
- palehorse864, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1Who are you talking bout blaming the bear? It sounds like teh bear is eating his Alpaca and he's going to defend them. It doesn't sound like he's moralizing the bear or anything, just defending the alpaca since the bear broke into the barn.
- buzaman, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1The 5th Kind
- graywolfz10, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1I agree the bear is just being a bear, but if a bear wants to eat something of yours hes going to do it regardless of how well you secure your property. The only real option is to kill the predator, and animals are not dumb kill one or two and they will stop coming.
And I agree with the .38 I dont know what he thinks hes going to do with that. Anything less then a 30-30 will just be a sting. - RunDiggMC, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1Maybe the dingo ate the babies.
- Telionis, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1Muzzle Energies:
:30-30 rifle =1700 ft-lbs.
:12g shotgun = 3,500+ ft-lbs
:38 special pistol = ~230 ft-lbs.
The 38 special has about half the muzzle energy of modern 40 S&W police pistols, and less than a third of that required to be able to legally use the weapon to hunt deer (700+, for humane reasons). Using such a weapon on a grown black bear would be a bad idea unless the guy is as accurate with his snub nose pistol as your average SWAT team sniper is with his .308.
I once read that a game warden shot a grizzly right between the eyes with a .45 ACP (400 ft-lbs), but the round did not penetrating skull (it dazed the bear, but did not stop the attack, forcing him to put several rounds into the bear's belly).
The bear in question was not a grizzly of course, but it still seems to me that attacking a 400 lbs bear with something that is generally considered too weak to reliably use for self defense against an 150 lbs human or 80 lbs deer, is a bad idea. - johndavidjack, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1I've killed (with two other people) a black bear 'accidently' with a 12 gauge shotgun while I was deer hunting before.
It happen to be in season, and the bear thought it would be a great idea to run out of a huge grapevine/pricker bush thicket.
But it took probably 6-7 shots to kill it, and we actually just let it run off and we waited for about 2 hours while it bled out. - kbillar, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1and it's their fault for being so delicious...mmmm alpaca burger
