This man is my hero. - vsujohn2, on 07/18/2009, -6/+190Old!
Buried - flossdaily, on 07/18/2009, -0/+138Being the oldest person alive is a lot like being Al-Qaeda's #2 operative. You're a little bit famous, you're going to be dead soon, and someone else will immediately take your place.
- djphilos, on 07/18/2009, -1/+138Family members said his death was unexpected.
- VelvetEvolver, on 07/18/2009, -0/+83Another one?! It's like the title is cursed...
- seastobble, on 07/18/2009, -2/+71I have a great grandpa that just turned 101 last November, and I can't even begin to imagine the things he's seen. I will never be able to see the world through his perspective, and it's hard imagine how the world has changed since that time. His parents immigrated from Germany to Texas, and he's lived and farmed there his entire life. From World War I to World War II, from the Dust Bowl to the Cotton Bowl, from segregation to having a black president. I love sitting down and talking to him; I wish everyone had a 100+ year old relative to talk to, the world would be so much more intelligent.
Here's his first house (he's the baby).

Everybody you knew who was older than you is dead, as is everybody else you knew when you were young. You're the last one, everybody else cannot imagine what you have seen, the experiences you have gone through - they only know via history textbooks.
- flossdaily, on 07/18/2009, -0/+55It snuck up on them without warning, like Christmas or a freight train.
- AZRoboto, on 07/18/2009, -2/+45Why does every death occur with Digg members pretending that they had deep, personal relationships with them?
"The world will be poorer for his passing." "You were the nation's grandfather." - spoodigity, on 07/18/2009, -0/+40old
- yeeaauuh, on 07/18/2009, -0/+39Lemme tell ya something!
- uglybanana, on 07/19/2009, -0/+35Just to point out the real meat of this story is not that he's just the oldest man but what he experienced and achieved.
He was the oldest surving member of any of the British armed forces
He was the oldest surviving veteran of WW1
He was the last survivor of the Battle of Jutland
He was a founder member of the RAF
He fought in 2 world wars
He was awarded the Légion d'honneur as well as many other medals
In WW2 he designed a way to neutralise German magnetic mines
He worked at Ford for 30 years designing car bodies starting in 1934
The list goes on and on. He puts his old age down to "cigarettes, whisky, wild women..... and a good sense of humour"
The guy was legend. - deadasdisco, on 07/18/2009, -0/+32you win.
- alais, on 07/18/2009, -13/+42He joined the Royal Naval Air Service in September 1915 before transferring to the RAF in April 1918 and was the last survivor of the Battle of Jutland.
Last month, Mr Allingham, born in 1896, became the world's oldest man following the death of previous title holder Japanese Tomoji Tanabe.
Mr Allingham once attributed his grand age to 'cigarettes, whisky and wild, wild women'. - eanbowman, on 07/18/2009, -0/+27It's so distasteful yet so functionally appropos I couldn't bury it.
- inactive, on 07/18/2009, -11/+33Yes, I read the article you ***** taint
- emkaysmith, on 07/19/2009, -3/+23Why, especially? There's already a new World's Oldest Man.
. . . and they're always dying. That's a really tough job. - thedez, on 07/18/2009, -0/+19I think the bigger news is that he was one of the very few surviving veterans of the first World War. By few, I mean between 4 and 6.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_surviving_vet ... - alamedaman, on 07/18/2009, -0/+16born before the spanish american war... the country has changed so much since then
- WordsnCollision, on 07/18/2009, -1/+17Get off his Forest Lawn.
- CrizzleG, on 07/18/2009, -0/+15...the nation's cigarette smoking, alcoholic, womanizing grandfather! :D
- hinmanj, on 07/18/2009, -0/+14In other news, the world's next oldest man throws a going away party for Henry Allingham.
- gadgetsnall, on 07/18/2009, -6/+19the world will be poorer for his passing
- devansega, on 07/19/2009, -0/+12Nope, biggest navel engagment of ww1. Result was a stalemate but the german navy would not come out of port for the rest of the war, such was the power of the royal navy at the time.
- Jeepy, on 07/18/2009, -2/+14Isn't he the former world's oldest man now? Semantics aside I can't imagine what seeing so much of history unfold must have been like. I hope he got to experience some of the wonders of the technology revolution in his twilight years.
- doubledmateo, on 07/19/2009, -0/+11what in the world are you smoking? Does this somehow make sense to you?
- MogusMaximus, on 07/18/2009, -0/+10I enjoy things I can remember!
- eanbowman, on 07/18/2009, -0/+10Yeah, it's quite a thought really. In some ways I wish I had a chance to pick his brain on some things.
* Thinking seriously about calling my only living grandparent. - mrcubes2u, on 07/18/2009, -0/+9"Mr Alllingham's death leaves just two surviving British veterans of the First World War - Harry Patch, 111, who is the last surviving soldier in the world to have fought in the trenches, and Claude Choules, 108, who served in the Royal Navy."
I just can't say enough about Harry Patch. I mean, I love Harry Patch. I could spend all day with Harry Patch. - rednaxela825, on 07/18/2009, -2/+11Yea I wonder that too. Like when Walter Cronite died http://digg.com/world_news/Walter_Cronkite_Dead_at ... and haidalangara just felt that he just had to let the digg community know that he knows his grandson so he can act like he has a deep personal relationship with the Cronkite family.
- DaviDTC, on 07/18/2009, -0/+9"Who are you? I don't have no stinkin' grandson."
- mttrailboss, on 07/19/2009, -0/+8Walter Breuning of Great Falls, Montana is now the 'world's oldest man'. Walter is 112 and 10 months and lives at the Rainbow Retirement and Assisted Living Center in Great Falls, Montana. I called the center and asked if I could talk with Walter and congratulate him on becoming the 'oldest man in the world'. The young lady that answered the phone said and I quote.., "Walter is on the phone with one of his girlfriends" What !.. Nice going, Walter.
- DaviDTC, on 07/18/2009, -4/+12Ya, I'm not getting this quoting the article thing with nothing to say about it. It seems to be happening more and more lately.
- MrWolf, on 07/18/2009, -0/+8Rest in peace
- dschmink, on 07/18/2009, -3/+11World's oldest man dies.... again.
- AZRoboto, on 07/19/2009, -1/+9He remembers the days when Apples were healthy fruit and not status symbols.
- Secret7000, on 07/18/2009, -1/+9Just to tell you - I read none of that.
- vierce, on 07/19/2009, -0/+7It was your fault they divorced.
- headzoo, on 07/19/2009, -0/+6"War's stupid. Nobody wins. You might as well talk first, you have to talk last anyway."
Best quote I've heard all week. - martage, on 07/18/2009, -0/+6qft
- Subduction, on 07/19/2009, -3/+9Quitter.
- flossdaily, on 07/18/2009, -0/+6That's a song title. Jim Croce covered it, and it was written (maybe) by Ramblin Jack Elliott.
- okitasan, on 07/18/2009, -0/+6seriously. ::salute::
- iloveGod08, on 07/19/2009, -0/+5Germany had the same number of battleships as England by the time WWI started, but you are right before that they couldn't compete.
- fuzzybeard, on 07/19/2009, -1/+6I cannot imagine what it would be like to have lived across three centuries; the things witnessed and experienced...Still, I think immortality would drive any person mad simply because they literally have seen and done it all.
- dougieo, on 07/19/2009, -0/+5sky diving incident
- KrayzieKyd, on 07/18/2009, -0/+5Too young.
- skinny01, on 07/19/2009, -0/+5What would really suck is if that person were to tell you something he experienced and be called a liar since there's nobody else around that could verify it.
- djphilos, on 07/18/2009, -2/+7Hey its Firemarshell Bill!
- DaviDTC, on 07/18/2009, -0/+5No *****. Did you really thing the oldest person who ever lived who was already dead had just died?
