- Slash0, on 04/04/2009, -1/+38Did anybody else read the title and think it was strange that women were being switched, and babies were being given 425,000 euros?
- ScottyAnimal, on 04/04/2009, -2/+32Seriously imagine someone just told you your parents aren't your real parents and that you had an identical twin. Imagine seeing someone who looked EXACTLY like you for the first time. That has to trip you the ***** out. So I can see how they would be traumatized.
- peterjmag, on 04/04/2009, -12/+30FTA: "The parents of the young women, all of whom claim to have been traumatised by the switch, were also awarded part of the damages."
Of course, they weren't "traumatized" until they realized that they could make some money off of the whole situation. - noahgelman, on 04/04/2009, -0/+16I think raising a child for 17 years thats not their own and missing out on everything in the life of the girl who is is deserving of some compensation. 3 daughters, plus 2 parents each is 7 people.
450,000 divided by 7 is about 64,200 euros each if distributed evenly. It sounds like they got less then a full share so they probably got less then that. I think that that's not too much compensation for learning that the daughter you've been raising isn't even yours. - SniperZero, on 04/04/2009, -1/+15425,000 Euros is totally worth 17 years of missed life thats 25,000 Euros / year a life is worth.
- SenatorPenguin, on 04/04/2009, -0/+12Pro Tip: Babies tend to look a lot alike.
- TTTrouble, on 04/04/2009, -0/+10jesus christ. Can you imagine?
imagine the first meeting of the three of them...
one of these three don't belong...can you guess which one it is?? - AtraNoxVII, on 04/04/2009, -11/+20"In 2002, both families took legal action against the Polish state seeking damages for all three girls, now aged 25. The parents of the young women, all of whom claim to have been traumatised by the switch, were also awarded part of the damages"
What damage? I might be playing devil's advocate here but I think this is total bull, how traumatized can you be from from a switch that happened 17 years ago that you're only just finding out about now? Come on you're almost 18 most of your teen years are gone, what different does it make? Why does it then take you 2 more years to decide hey I want some money from this, you're 20 friggin' years old, you've already lived a nearly a quarter of your life now, if you were 12 or 13 and find out maybe but once you pass the 18 year old mark, you're just looking for a payout. - celticsilverado, on 04/04/2009, -0/+9Of course. Hot Polish Twins. Link: http://news.sawf.org/Lifestyle/28336.aspx
- Retnuh730, on 04/04/2009, -1/+9Hint: Not all twins are identical.
- Warom, on 04/04/2009, -2/+9What? They still lived those 17 years, lived normal lives which weren't affected by the switch and until the moment they found out they were switched it wasn't even a thought never mind a problem. The two girls believed they were non-identical twins and were all part of the same family. and the separated twin believed that the new parents were her real parents and vice versa. There was no problem until the issue came to light and they realised they could make money from this. The fact that the parents couldn't tell the difference either should say something too.

http://news.sawf.org/Lifestyle/28336.aspx - iFrix, on 04/04/2009, -0/+4surprised? yes.
Excited about meeting your new "brother/sister"? yes
pissed of at the hospital? yes.
Traumatized? no
It'll have some impact on your life for sure. But they're just milking it for the money. Finding out your adopted (which is what happened really) happens to quite some people, and most of them can still have a normal life. - thedivinelyevil, on 04/04/2009, -1/+5i had to read the title multiple times trying to make sense of it! glad to know others faced the same difficulties!
- inactive, on 04/04/2009, -0/+4Awkwaaard!
Must have been painful for the oddball. Ouch... - chiefbandit2200, on 04/04/2009, -0/+3Throw in some single moms, a wife-beating deadbeat dad, and you have yourself a Lifetime movie.
- CdnPhoto, on 04/04/2009, -0/+3It reminds me of a similar situation that happened in Ottawa, Canada.
the only article I could find right now was from snopes
http://www.snopes.com/pregnant/switched.asp - LilJimmyNordin, on 04/04/2009, -0/+3Some commas would have helped... "Women, switched as babies, win 425, 000 euros damages." Basic punctuation FTW.
"Works on contingency? No, money down!" - phenom2k7, on 04/04/2009, -0/+3If only we could replace the original article with your one.
- isheee, on 04/04/2009, -0/+3It's not Euros?! Thanks. I've been living a lie.
- StriderNemesis, on 04/04/2009, -0/+2Hospitals are merciless when it comes to charging people, and whenever they make a mistake like this one, they should be punished severely. I'm not sure that €425,000 was enough.
- nobeastsofierce, on 04/04/2009, -0/+2FTA:
A court in the Polish capital Warsaw on Thursday awarded 1.9 million zloty (425,000 euros, 566,000 dollars) to three young women switched at birth
Surely only two of them were switched, no? - FarOutGrace, on 04/04/2009, -0/+2But, isn't Euros almost a slang expression of Eurodollars, ie....425 bucks or 425 Euros instead of Eurodollars or Euro-dollars, depending on who is spelling it. Really, who would say, "I have 425 Euro, unless it's a fanatical sense of correcting of the mundane or a sense of perfection. I've always said Euros. I don't think of it as incorrect, unless as you said, I'm living a lie!
- SniperZero, on 04/04/2009, -0/+2If your gonna post ascii make it smaller no one wants to waste a bunch of bandwidth with something that is probably going to be buried anyway.
- PakoBedejo, on 04/04/2009, -0/+2I thought I was the only one who wondered what the women had done to be beaten by switches & why the hell babies were winning 425,000 Euros...
...If it hadn't been for my horse, I wouldn't have spent that year in college... - cubee, on 04/04/2009, -0/+2the title is a mess...
- Larsonal777, on 04/04/2009, -0/+2you know people actually pay thousands of dollars to raise children that arent even theirs
- Larsonal777, on 04/04/2009, -0/+2yeah... that'd be pretty cool to have 2 sets of parents that love you... I mean I bet it's like one big extended family... It's probably going to be the best thing that's happened to them and they'll joke about it every thanksgiving... i'm thankfull that we totally got away with half a million dollars... and my sisters.
No seriously i bet they call themselves the triplets. - ladysherwood, on 04/04/2009, -0/+1to ashstoashs: I agree with that point. I'm sorry if I misunderstood what you meant the first time. I would think 15 days later, even a day later a mother would recognize her baby from an imposter.
- Larsonal777, on 04/04/2009, -0/+1you do know peoples genes are turned on and off by the environment they are raised... heck even identical twins that are attached at the hip look different in some way. I would know... I'm about to marry one and everything about her is unique in some way.
Imagine how different the genes would be after being raised in completely different families. - AshsToAshs, on 04/04/2009, -0/+1Im not sure what part of the article you think im confused about.
I know the mother was given two babies.
My point was that if the mother knew she had just given birth to identical twins, shouldn't she have become suspicious that they didnt look like before 17 years had gone by? - Mareshalu, on 04/04/2009, -0/+1Get over it, you didn't know who you're raising.
- AshsToAshs, on 04/04/2009, -0/+1True, but usually after they've aged a few years they tend to look different, no?
It shouldn't take 17 years notice they dont look alike... - d66kid, on 04/04/2009, -0/+1Imagine just meeting your identical twin on the street by accidence.
- impedance101, on 04/04/2009, -0/+1What if you were just switched for a day.. would they still give you the 68 Euros?
- Natendo64, on 04/05/2009, -0/+1So what would you do after would you stay with the parents who raised you or live with the sister you never had?
- vulps, on 04/04/2009, -0/+1"You're adopted".
It wasn't that bad. - ladysherwood, on 04/04/2009, -0/+1not to mention, they gave the mother of twins two babies at the end of the hospital stay. 15 days after birth, they got sick. that's when the switch happened. the article wasn't very long... go ahead & read it now.
- inactive, on 04/05/2009, -0/+1So...what's my daughter like?
- AshsToAshs, on 04/04/2009, -0/+1Yes, i understand that, but in most cases of twin birth the doctors can tell you right away if they are going to be identical or not.
- borez, on 04/04/2009, -1/+1Did your horse have a problem with you going to college?
- jphlec, on 04/04/2009, -0/+0as far as im concerned, your true parents are the ones who took care of you and supported you while you were growing up. finding out they're not your real parents won't change your relationship with them.
- nj10ii, on 04/04/2009, -1/+1Not being raised together, I'd suspect they probably had different hair styles, dressing styles, ect... So it wouldn't really be like looking into the mirror.
I have boy/girl fraternal twins, and the steps the hospital took when ALL my kids were born guarantees there isn't a chance for switchig. Bands on their arm and on their legs. I watched them put them on... - Larsonal777, on 04/04/2009, -1/+1what's funny is 25 years later they are punishing the hospital... does the nurse even work there anymore?
- Tayloristehsux, on 04/04/2009, -1/+1The plural of Euro is Euro.
This is because there is a need to not discriminate against certain languages' form of plurality.
Tard. - Tayloristehsux, on 04/04/2009, -2/+2The plural of Euro is Euro.
- freedomischaos, on 04/04/2009, -1/+1They should have played it out like in the movie "Chaos Theory" and just lived their lives to the fullest.
- rolf, on 04/04/2009, -2/+2Well, I think the size of the settlement is a little over the top.
But the pair that got switched essentially have 2 sets of parents now. You can't exactly forget the folks that took care of you for 17 years at the drop of a hat either.
I wonder if it' strain. -
