- Grolsch, on 01/07/2009, -5/+158I feel for her horrible childhood experience but adults with victim mentality get on my nerves.
- BrandonJM, on 01/05/2009, -2/+931) She's not blind.
2) She has $10,000 dollars (from a settlement). Why is she not taking a cab and still using the subway?
3) The dog (might) posses a danger to other subway riders. So if you allow her on the subway and the dog attacks someone, I think it is safe to assume the resulting lawsuit (negligence on the part of the Transit Authority because they allowed this individual on with the dog) would cost the city way more money.
I feel bad for her, I really do, but as a former subway rider, having a dog or any large (untrained) animal on there poses a risk to other commuters. - sexybobo, on 01/05/2009, -3/+82Should be easy for the NYC Transit. Service dogs have to be trained by certified trainers and have a long process to go through for the to be service dogs and has to carry the official license for it along with the dog at all times. If she had that I doubt they would have stopped her so i doubt it is a real service dog but just a dog she says is her service dog.
- stefyourself, on 01/07/2009, -2/+56This is ridiculous. Every woman I know here in New York who wants to protect herself from a sexual assault simply carries mace. We don't make all of the poor souls squeezing themselves onto the overcrowded 6 at rush hour deal with a massive beast. The smell of hobo urine is enough, but now this woman wants me to deal with dog ***** on the train? Please.
- vitaminz1990, on 01/07/2009, -0/+54Do she really need to sue for 10 million? I mean seriously, lady, that subway ride wasn't worth that much.
- SniperZero, on 01/07/2009, -1/+441. get random dog
2. pretend to be a victim
3. profit. - inactive, on 01/07/2009, -3/+44Childhood memories don't kill people, guns kill people.
They kill dogs, too. - kelaltieri, on 01/07/2009, -0/+41Caucasian Ovcharka Breed Profile:
The Caucasian Ovtcharka's original purpose was to protect livestock. The typical Caucasian Ovtcharka is assertive, strong-willed, and courageous. Unless properly socialized and trained, the Caucasian Ovtcharka may exhibit ferocious and unmanageable tendencies. It is very brave, alert, strong and hardy. It distrusts people it does not know and it has a powerful urge to defend. Everything and everyone who belongs to the family, including children, cats, other dogs, etc, will be regarded by this dog as part of "its" family and will be respected and protected. This dog should not be left alone with children, because if play becomes too rough, the Caucasian Ovtcharka my feel the need to protect your child, and may do it extensively. It has no time for strangers, but it will greet family friends warmly. It can be rather dominate towards other dogs it does not know. Some German fanciers employ the dogs as foremost guardians and deterrents. This is not a dog for everyone. It requires an owner who knows how to display strong leadership and who is willing to spend a lot of time socializing and training.
ferocious, unmanageable tendencies .. powerful urge to defend .. no time for strangers? yeah, i want that kind of dog on my subway. trained as a service dog or not .. no thanks. - Fractl, on 01/07/2009, -0/+40And what does this mean for riders who are terrified of dogs?
- barfnugget, on 01/07/2009, -2/+39I hate people like this.
Stop suing for stupid reasons. - ldailey06, on 01/07/2009, -3/+35sounds like ***** to me
- Foenetik, on 01/07/2009, -2/+32I don't know this woman, and yet I hate her.
- adrenalmedulla9, on 01/07/2009, -1/+31Yeah, I hope she loses.
- Rikkochet, on 01/07/2009, -0/+26They should pay out in subway tokens.
- krekc, on 01/07/2009, -1/+26Thats fine but when that dog bites me you bet your ass Im suing for 10 Million.
- barfnugget, on 01/07/2009, -0/+25I imagine it would be useful to be plural.
- Ftown13, on 01/07/2009, -2/+26What a hideous coat she's wearing
- buzzair, on 01/07/2009, -3/+26Actually you're quite wrong. I am deaf and I have a service animal. I don't take him on the subways mind you but I researched this topic extensively after my landlord tried to raise my rent. My dog alerts me to sounds and I don't need to have him "officially trained." My dog turns his head when the phone rings, runs to the door when the doorbell rings, and things of that nature. I shouldn't have to pay a pet fee because I can't hear and need assistance.
There is actually no such thing as an "official" service animal. Those private organizations who train dogs are great but nowhere in the ADA language does it say only they are required to train the dog. So regardless if the lady trained the dog herself or had him trained by professionals, he is still a service animal. She just has to prove she has a disability. That's all. Read the ADA and Fair Housing Act guidelines.
I'm not saying I agree with what she is doing. It is very easy to abuse this privilege. I don't bring my dog on the airplane, hotels, cabs, even though I legally could. I pay for doggy daycare and boarding. Especially with the language she uses, and comments she has made...but your comment..... "Service dogs have to be trained by certified trainers and have a long process to go through for the to be service dogs and has to carry the official license" ..... is dead wrong. - Pardis, on 01/07/2009, -1/+24this is one of the things that is wrong with the world today, everyone thinks they are special and the rules do not apply to them.
- azureskies88, on 01/07/2009, -1/+21I don't care if they beat a her senseless with her own dog, there is no way anything involved in the suit can be valued at anywhere near $10M. Perhaps another $10k, at most.
- bobboberton, on 01/07/2009, -1/+21Addendum to #3: Potential allergic reactions as well. But hey, maybe she'll get sued for another passenger having an attack and causing "severe mental, physical, and emotional" trauma!
- ig88b1, on 01/07/2009, -9/+29Sex abuse? I call BS. Nobody would touch that. Except maybe a sperm whale...
- kirado4, on 01/05/2009, -7/+26Being a women can be usefull in situations like this..
- Hetman, on 01/05/2009, -1/+19I agree with you. But my friend is on his condo board. I know it is a private orginization. It was a dog free condo. However one lady did bring her dog and it was not a service dog. She claimed the same thing this lady did. Which was that she needed it for emotional comfort. They condo board could not find any lawyer who would even attempt to try the case. They pretty much all came to the same conclusion that the her rights as a victim in the end win out over common sense.
- sockpuppets, on 01/07/2009, -1/+18Michael Vick is that you?
- sexybobo, on 01/05/2009, -1/+18It is people feeling sorry for her ignoring the law.
- shotgunefx, on 01/07/2009, -1/+17Oh, no, I've been mildly inconvenienced! I think that's worth ten times then you'll ever make in your lifetime.
I ***** hate people. - ZenSuckit, on 01/07/2009, -1/+17I've definitely ridden with her and the dog. It is very docile, but the simple size of the dog makes you give it a wide berth. I would prefer not to ride with it, but I would also prefer to not ride with the Chelsea boys who bring their little foofoo dogs in their little foofoo dog pouches. NY is a dog-friendly town, not sure why she is getting so much trouble. Not sure why she needs $10M either...
- sockpuppets, on 01/07/2009, -1/+17Hi dog. I like your coat. I wore one like it in the Perfect Storm. Say hi to your mother for me.
- chris062689, on 01/07/2009, -1/+15Apparently, there is no mystery step in this one!
- TheDarkTrumpet, on 01/07/2009, -0/+14I don't think the problem itself is that she wants a dog - I think the main problem is that she wants 10 million dollars in the bit of trouble that she's encountered. When it takes an entire life time and then some for most people to come close to working to make 10 million, someone getting it for a few bits of problems they encountered is just totally wrong.
Personally I don't care about the dog as much as I care about all the tax payers in that city that will need to foot the bill for this lady to get 10 million dollars. - Alias1431, on 01/07/2009, -1/+15The dog can smell death, cool.
- CaptainNoPants, on 01/07/2009, -1/+15I don't want to chance being bitten or worse by what's been described as a 'ferocious' dog on a subway unless I'm attacking a blind man with a flamethrower.
"Stamm said her stress disorder causes extreme fear of danger, severe depression and confusion. The dog keeps her "in the present," warns her of sirens and horns, and provides a large, furry barrier in crowded places, she said."
If we let this thing win, there's no telling how much farther it'll go. If she has that much difficult of a time being in public then she should just stay home. With symptoms like those she's much more of a danger to others. Once she starts infringing on the rights of other Americans her right to do whatever the hell she wants ends. - Rikkochet, on 01/07/2009, -1/+141) Because those are the rules. End of story. I'd love to bring my ***** 20' python on the train with me but apparently that's frowned upon.
2) It's a different lawsuit in her eyes - the previous one was because they ticketed her in a station.
3) Your logic is misaligned. If a teenager has a gun or knife, then the teenager should not be allowed to bring a gun or knife onto public transportation. (THEY'RE NOT ALLOWED).
If a fat, selfish old woman has a dangerous dog, then the fat, selfish old woman should not be allowed to bring a dangerous dog onto public transportation. (SHE'S NOT ALLOWED) - CaptainNoPants, on 01/07/2009, -1/+13Yeah, but she was raped by the family cat.
- Rikkochet, on 01/07/2009, -3/+15Sounds like a class act stupid woman.
Let your dog nobody likes roam free in the hall? I'm sure he'll get rat poison-laced treats before long. - Flynnz, on 01/07/2009, -0/+12tis true..but at the same time its a lot easier to avoid someone walking a dog on the street compared to a confined area such as the subway.
My mom is petrified of dogs, and would totally freak out if someone right next to her on the subway had a dog. (I am talking full on anxiety attack). When she sees a dog on the street, she can easily put some distance between herself, and the dog. Not the case in a subway.
So to me asking everyone else to ignore their mental issues with dogs, just for her issues of not having the dog, is pretty selfish. I also have a friend who is so allergic to dogs that if a dog hair comes near him he swells up...so again, this lady seems to only care about her needs, (not to mention suing for a sum like that is f'n insane) - Yambag, on 01/07/2009, -3/+15She uglied up her face for the same reason too.
- bobboberton, on 01/07/2009, -1/+12You forgot the mystery step!
1. Get large, potentially deadly dog
2. Pretend to suffer from (Pick one:) Childhood Trauma, Mental Anguish, or Emotional Suffering
3: ???
4: Profit!!! - inactive, on 01/07/2009, -2/+13Best Digg comment I've read all day. +1
- gixxer600, on 01/07/2009, -0/+11didnt she already get 10,000 now she thinks she can go for 10,000,000.....someone needs to put her in her place u dont deserve 10 mill there are millions of other victim that dont bitch as much as u ..i hope she loses
- mattw, on 01/07/2009, -0/+103) [From the article] She described livestock dogs as genetically wired with "tremendous killing power" and said Mishka could be aggressive toward elderly cancer patients because "she can smell death, and she doesn't want it near her."
- mwalker05, on 01/06/2009, -1/+10whether she is technically disabled or not, if it is indeed a licensed service dog im pretty sure she can legally take it wherever she wants to whether shes blind or not. also if it is a service dog that means that they are trained not to harm people and would never be given out if they showed signs of aggression.
some family friends of mine raise service dogs and we enjoy taking them into stores with their service vests on while we wear sunglasses and "accidentally" bump into people / displays. its a good way to train them and its a lot of fun. - inactive, on 01/07/2009, -1/+9That's not what employee retraining means, *****.
- neezie1990, on 01/07/2009, -1/+9You had me at "A woman who claims her 120-pound dog is protection from childhood memories of sex abuse"
- CaptainNoPants, on 01/07/2009, -0/+8If 2 wrongs don't make a right then why the hell do people keep making them?
Oh yeah, idiocy and frivolousness - shadowsurfr1, on 01/07/2009, -1/+9More like every 3 weeks in Manhattan...
- Plopfish, on 01/07/2009, -0/+8Dude, the "training" she is referring to is for the subway workers to make sure they don't question people with special dogs anymore. However, I do not think she deserves any money as she already got 10K. I don't really appreciate her stance and frivolous lawsuit.
- Toloran, on 01/07/2009, -1/+9"Stamm said her stress disorder causes extreme fear of danger, severe depression and confusion. The dog keeps her "in the present," warns her of sirens and horns, and provides a large, furry barrier in crowded places, she said."
I read that as "I like excuses to to sue for large sums of money."
I mean seriously, a guard dog is one thing but a 120 lbs of guard dog is another thing entirely. - brodie7838, on 01/07/2009, -1/+8Looking at her picture, I highly doubt she has to worry about any sort of sexual assault...
