- govsucks, on 06/30/2009, -54/+228Oh give me a break, pay your ***** rent. So rather than work 25 or 30 hours a week and pay for a little studio she kills herself. I guess that ends the pity party. What a pathetic human being. I think the line "this working ***** sucks! When do I get to hit the lotto? " sums her up pretty well. Someone has to maintain your shelter, keep the roof tiles from falling off, mow the grass, keep rotting boards replaced and fix plumbing problems. That "*****" doesn't do itself. A human being has to get out in the hot sun and actually do some of the work "*****" to keep the elements off your pathetic dependent ass. This human being didn't even want to pay someone to do those things. She no doubts expects others to labor so she can live for free. Isn't that nice? She wouldn't even contribute enough to society to keep HERSELF sheltered.
WEll, she made a choice this time that she has no choice but to be responsible for. This time, government can't put your bad choice on the shoulders of your neighbor. This is the last bad choice she will ever make.
Darwin wins again. - EnTaroTassadar, on 06/30/2009, -19/+122Her husband can afford to play video games. She can afford tattoos, TV, and internet. And apparently she could afford a shotgun, too. All this, and she can't pay her rent?
Sounds like she needs to get her priorities straight. Not one bit of sympathy for her. - Necronomicana, on 06/30/2009, -14/+108No *****, she can pay for tatoos, but not rent. Sounds like there is more to this story than "Big Bad Bank takes house."
- Hetman, on 06/30/2009, -2/+68There seems to be more to this story. I would imagine she also suffers from some type of other mental illness.
- Jabrams2, on 06/30/2009, -19/+81wow, this is absolutely awful. No other way to put it.
- fakesinatra, on 06/30/2009, -4/+58She wasn't suicidal because she was getting evicted. She was most likely suicidal due to untreated depression.
- rahsut, on 06/30/2009, -9/+50Sad part is that the owner of the apartment is probably going to be vilified for no just cause. If you don't pay your rent because you say "this working ***** sucks, when am i going to hit the lotto?" then you deserve to be evicted. Playing the lotto is not a sound investment strategy...
- cmw72, on 06/30/2009, -0/+38The title is a tad sensationalist ... she didn't tweet "just before death" ... she tweeted last at 7:04 PM on Jun 24th. According to the article... "Newnam shot herself at 1 p.m. yesterday" and the article is dated "Tuesday, Jun. 30 2009 @ 11:56AM". So a more accurate title would be "Woman Kills Self to Avoid Eviction, Tweets Several Days Before Death"
It's still tragic, but it's not like she tweeted as she was pulling the trigger. - inactive, on 06/30/2009, -7/+45Well its a good thing she tweeted about it, otherwise nobody would have cared. /s
- jamesgott, on 06/30/2009, -7/+40i guess she can afford guns too. but not rent.
- nepidae, on 06/30/2009, -10/+43seriously, how could someone sink so low as to use twitter.
- ozziegt, on 06/30/2009, -2/+30It's too bad that failure to pay rent has nothing to do with the housing bubble.
- inactive, on 06/30/2009, -6/+33yeah but from the looks of it she sure spent a lot of money on alcohol and tattoos.
- bmcnally, on 06/30/2009, -0/+24She has a husband as well. That's where things got really weird in the story for me. Where was he?
- vbullinger, on 06/30/2009, -5/+25I agree with most of your sentiments, but I think you could be a tad bit more empathetic when she just killed herself. If this was just a whiny YouTube video or something of a girl hating to work, I could understand that reaction, but this was a bit cold. Just saying.
- MaxD, on 06/30/2009, -2/+22Oh for ***** sake. Suicide (in the vast majority of cases) is not rational, it is a symptom of depression. Depression is a legitimate diagnosable and treatable mental illness (unless you are a Scientologist). Calling somebody weak-willed for topping themselves when they are depressed shows as much insight as calling somebody weak-willed for dying slowly of cancer.
To argue against this would be to argue that depression as a legitimate medical illness does not exist - are you willing to give that a shot?
How do I know she was depressed? She killed herself QED. - hugehead83, on 06/30/2009, -3/+21The "insignificant" costs of those extra bills are not the point here. Cable, TVs, cell phones/plans, etc. are a luxury. If you're poor, your priorities should be food and shelter, not access to twitter or playstation.
On a side note, I believe she would statistically have a better chance of landing a better, high-paying job if she was not covered in tattoos (this is admittedly a somewhat hasty generalization, as I do not know where/how many she has). - deadbaby, on 06/30/2009, -2/+19She'd get a lot more sympathy not complaining about the need to work while simultaneously complaining about the rich getting richer. While some rich people do get lucky (born into a good situation) some people just work very hard to get what they want. She obviously didn't want to do that.
- noblepaladin, on 06/30/2009, -3/+19We live in a welfare society, if you can't find a job the government does take care of you. You just have to feel the shame of being on welfare, buying food with food stamps, and living in government housing in some project/ghetto. Apparently people believe that they deserve more.
I grew up poor, my parents were on government assistance. I lived in the dirt poor part of town, got my public school education, went to MIT... now I make six figures after working for one year. I have $25k in my retirement accounts and $60k in the bank, all student loans paid off (worked through college, I graduated with money in the bank). What happened to working hard? What happened to saving money? I can live without TV, I can live in a dinky apartment, I can live without dining out every night. If 10% of the people is unemployed, work hard to be in the other 90%. If 50% of college students graduate without a job offer locked down, work hard to be the other 50%. The government will not give you a luxurious lifestyle, but they will give you enough to do anything you want (food, clothing, housing, education) if you are willing to work hard for it. Yeah people made fun of me when I was poor, but I don't care because most of them are weak, if they ever fall down they can't get up. - mywhitenoise, on 06/30/2009, -4/+20and video games.
- TexasShiv, on 06/30/2009, -3/+19Last time I checked, a video game console cost quite some bit of money. Cell phone + Internet + Cable~$100. Which is about a 4th of the cost of rent, depending on reasonable housing in a decent apartment complex(barring places like NYC).
- PowderedToasty, on 06/30/2009, -7/+22She probably had some mental problems. Normal healthy people don't usually kill themselves when they get evicted. Either way, have a little respect for another human.
- inactive, on 06/30/2009, -2/+17@ vampire
those people who died from a cops taze or died from cancer did not choose to die. Nor can you say that people get skin cancer from the sun. this woman took her own life willingly. That's why these things are labeled as suicide. - mnemy, on 06/30/2009, -16/+31Agreed. She sound like a weak human being. Natural selection at work. You don't kill yourself because you're a little down on your luck. You work twice as hard to get on your feet again.
The coward killed herself for her own reasons, and used the "economy" as a scapegoat. I won't mourn her passing. - BearKill, on 06/30/2009, -15/+29Yeah, and she killed herself when she realized that the savior Obama wasn't going to cover her rent after all.
- Bukowsky, on 06/30/2009, -19/+32jesus, that's *****' sad.
- rahsut, on 06/30/2009, -6/+19She says "this working ***** sucks, when am I going to hit the lotto". This lack of a work ethic or any idea that she has to be responsible for herself denies her pity for her financial situation. She needed mental help, as does anyone who seriously contemplates suicide.
- nepidae, on 06/30/2009, -4/+17Evicted from life.
- inactive, on 06/30/2009, -0/+13honestly I feel much more sympathy towards the husband than I do her. He now has to live with that event in his mind for the rest of his life.
- rahsut, on 06/30/2009, -3/+16the banks don't have a right to the house you defaulted on? if you pay your mortgage you wont get foreclosed on.
- PerfectKryme, on 06/30/2009, -7/+20Wow a comment on digg that tells it like it is and doesn't get dugg down. You got my vote! This woman is all that is wrong with some people today who feel "entitled"
- headzoo, on 06/30/2009, -2/+14You must have read a different article than I did, because the one I read didn't mention how much she did or didn't work, or even what her financial situation was, or any of the other qualities you've attributed to her.
"So rather than work 25 or 30 hours a week and pay for a little studio she kills herself. I guess that ends the pity party."
How do you know how many hours she worked? I read through her Twitter posts, and all she does is mention how tired she is. One of her Facebook products is "I need a vacation". It's more than possible that she was working quite a lot. There are plenty of people in America that work very long hours, but still end up losing all they own to the bank. It only took a large medical bill to ***** their financial situation.
"I think the line "this working ***** sucks! When do I get to hit the lotto? " sums her up pretty well."
What does that sum up? I know people that work 50 hours a week that are always saying, "Man, I need to win the lottery". It's just a stupid thing people say at the end of a long day. It doesn't sum up anything.
Also, how exactly did you read the part "this working ***** sucks", and then comment that she didn't work?
"This human being didn't even want to pay someone to do those things. She no doubts expects others to labor so she can live for free."
No, really. What article did you read? Where is any of that mentioned? You went on a very long rant based 100% on assumption. You quite possibly blasted a dead woman based solely on poor assumptions. - EddiePotato, on 06/30/2009, -0/+12Playing video games?
- inactive, on 06/30/2009, -10/+22Her Facebook page has a link to "Not having George Bush as president".
- theoccupation, on 06/30/2009, -1/+12In her defense.
Ya'll can make snap judgements on her situation, but what I feel bad for is the time behind it.
We learn about her situation in just a few words. We sum her up as quick as possible, never realizing that life happens in real time. I'm sure she was hurting, probably crying. I mean, I've never been at that point where I'd really kill myself. And quite frankly, I don't want to ever understand that mindset. We can sit here, and talk *****. But whatever her situation was, and her decision to kill herself, is beyond what most of us will probably go through.
Everyone who comments here, I would love to see what buttons had to be pushed to make you want to kill yourself. Hell, I'm sure if given some godly power, I'm sure I could tear your lives apart to make you wanna pull the trigger also. Do ya'll honestly believe you're tough as nails to survive anything. I know for damn certain I'm not, I've just been pushed to that degree and pray it never happens. - Tyrghast, on 06/30/2009, -2/+13This is sad but as always, suicide was entirely unnecessary.
- Colecoman1982, on 06/30/2009, -2/+13I agree that she probably doesn't deserve to be held up as a "poster-girl" for the bad economy, but I don't blame her for that. This looks like another piss-poor "journalist" looking to make the facts fit the sob-story he/she wants to tell rather than making the story fit the facts.

"I think the line "this working ***** sucks! When do I get to hit the lotto? " sums her up pretty well"
Really? One line of text from a person you've never met, and know almost nothing more about, and you think that you are, in any way, qualified to sum up anything about her? That has to be one of the most arrogant and ignorant statements I've ever heard. For all we know, she had a horrible job that she dreaded going to. There's nothing wrong with that and it says nothing about her work-ethic as a whole. Nowhere in that statement is it suggested that she didn't, actually, go to work (when she had a job).
Quote:
"She wouldn't even contribute enough to society to keep HERSELF sheltered."
Again, how, exactly, do you know how much work she contributed to society. Most people don't get to decide how much money they make for the work they do, you apply for jobs and you get what the companies decide to pay you. For all we know, she may have been working her ass off at more than one job but only pulling in minimum wage. Or, she may have, eventually, lost her job that was allowing her to pay for all those things you point to as wasted money.
Of course, it is possible she was every bit as shallow as you make her out to be but the point is that you have no clue one way or the other. As with anyone who commits suicide, chances are good that she suffered from severe depression/chemical imbalances. In the end, the real person that should be blamed is the "journalist" who embellished the, almost non-existent, details in order to form the heart-wrenching, "topical" news piece that he/she felt would sell more newspapers. - Pyro979, on 06/30/2009, -1/+12and a cellphone, and internet access
- fiatjustitia, on 06/30/2009, -11/+21"So rather than work 25 or 30 hours a week and pay for a little studio she kills herself"
With the way things are, you still wouldn't be able to afford a studio with those hours. - Takfam, on 06/30/2009, -2/+12I love all of the hate for the lotto line. Please, lie to me and say you DON'T want to hit a lottery jackpot. I haven't filled my "Wow, there are some real ***** morons on this site" quota for the day, yet.
- Screwy1138, on 06/30/2009, -3/+13I win a dollar twice a week by never playing the lotto. That's $100 a year.
- inigomntoya, on 06/30/2009, -0/+9Nor is committing suicide. Now someone has to clean up the nasty mess.
But, I am sure at the time, she was thinking, "I'll show them!" - marrod1977, on 06/30/2009, -3/+12My husband and I are going through a foreclosure and a bankruptcy........and I have 3 kids....
I refuse to throw a pity party or blame anyone else (BTW It can take up to 18 months to foreclose on a home in Florida...Meaning you get to live rent free for a loooong time....plus they give you all kinds of "warnings" waaaay before they even attempt to come "kick you out"........So it's not like they come in the middle of the night without warning) Anyone blaming this on the "economy" "housing market" or "the government"....give me a frakin break.....Even though I can understand her frustration I can't even imagine "killing myself" over any of it....How absolutely tragic that she could have killed herself over something so stupid! - soulonfire928, on 06/30/2009, -0/+9mentally healthy people don't consider suicide as an option to eviction. obviously something was going on with her.
- inactive, on 06/30/2009, -7/+15They're internet crusaders who talk ***** but when someone close to home kills themselves I'm sure they'll change their tune. ***** punks.
- SicSevens, on 06/30/2009, -3/+11This is the best viral marketing campaign for 'Rescue Me' I've ever seen!
- hotrodscott, on 06/30/2009, -0/+8What is with all the righteous comments? Things are crap right now for a lot of people. Eviction can push someone over the edge. It is sad.
- martinmayhem, on 06/30/2009, -0/+8How can it take 3 hours from when the shot was fired to when the SWAT team found her dead? Was that 3 hours of calling her name to see if she answered, or was traffic really bad?
- ogletree, on 06/30/2009, -2/+10Working sucks a lot of people don't want to work. I don't want to work. I feel the same way I wish I could win the loto and just do whatever I wanted. Depression sucks. I feel very bad for her family. That is very sad.
- charlie6969, on 07/01/2009, -0/+8I grew up thinking that suicide was a total cop-out and those that committed suicide were the most self-absorbed, selfish people in the world. ie. good riddance.
Then I got major clinical depression.
Then I understood. Perfectly.
The hard part isn't committing suicide; it's trying to go on living when you are in hell; no hope for the future, thinking your family would be better off with someone (anyone) else, basically no hope of anything ever getting better.
Hell is not a lake of fire.
It is losing all hope.
At one time, the only thing that saved my life was my family convincing me that no matter what hardships they have to go through because of me; they only wanted ME!
They literally saved my life.
All of these people, here in the comments, that are saying good riddance and calling her names, think about this; Bernie Madoff and his ilk had just about the same amount of empathy for others as you. Aren't you proud?
ok, start digging me down now. -
