- sweetpickle, on 01/19/2009, -1/+65Not too bad, usually guys don't come and talk to me, so I can code in peace and quiet
- drmangrum, on 01/20/2009, -2/+56In my experience, there are two types of females that work in the tech industry:
1) The flirty, giggly, and all around annoying types that use their gender as a means of advancement. They may, and more likely, may not know how to actually do their job.
2) Those that are serious about their job and genuinely do their best to fit into the team. Nobody cares what gender they are, only if they can get the job done.
The author strikes me as number 1. - orlyfactor, on 01/20/2009, -7/+46That chick...does not work in tech...maybe sales of tech.
- X9001, on 01/20/2009, -1/+37System.out.println("hey baby");
- JEWestbrookJR, on 01/20/2009, -2/+37I've only worked with one tech that was a girl, she was also a lesbian so not only could I geek out with her, but she shared my appreciation for boobies!
- strawberyspring, on 01/19/2009, -3/+38Its not so bad once you pass 25 but early 20s is just socially awkward!
- Eurynom0s, on 01/20/2009, -1/+35"What's it like to be a girl in tech?"
What is automatically being the most popular person in the room, Alex? - krellor, on 01/20/2009, -1/+34So, another article about women in tech, from a women who works in a tech based company, but not in a technical position? Personally, I'd be more interested in hearing from lady programmers, engineers, etc... rather than some lady who is an executive. At least her bio on her site doesn't list any tech experience, just management and PR type stuff.

- iDiggYa, on 01/20/2009, -2/+31hey wats up
- gfxlonghorn, on 01/20/2009, -4/+32I do believe you have misinterpreted them being "sweet." And well... older moving guy+younger girl alone is a classic plot for a porn.
- gfxlonghorn, on 01/20/2009, -0/+27I am not really sure how that would be a bad thing for him?... He is getting a girl to come to his house AND touch him. I do believe that would make his year.
- JoreKM, on 01/19/2009, -4/+30I just love that full page ad.
/sarcasm - acknotSW, on 01/20/2009, -0/+26yep, sounds like someone wanted to have some "hey, I helped you move" sex
- melonhedd, on 01/20/2009, -5/+31Girls in tech produce things like this: http://leahculver.com/2007/04/19/star-ratings/
- specialK16, on 01/20/2009, -3/+24Hi
- mr1337, on 01/20/2009, -4/+24Being a Girl in Tech? That doesn't apply to me.
I'm more interested in flipping the words "Girl" and "Tech" around. - d2002, on 01/19/2009, -3/+23I know I've heard a lot of great things about Kara Swisher of All Things Digital. She's on Digg, you know.
- BabyWookie, on 01/20/2009, -0/+20Internet Tough Girl?
- 2geeksinapod, on 01/20/2009, -0/+17My experience is pretty good. The men I work with are (for the most part) are old enough to be my dad, so they are pretty sweet. When I 1st started they came to my house and unloaded the moving truck when it arrived
- ileftfark, on 01/20/2009, -2/+18I would imagine very similar to being a woman in any job... When can we let go of the notion that it's somehow strange for a woman to work in a field that involves numbers or computers? I realize that there are far more men in the field, so I guess the followup article "What's It Like to Be a Guy in Retail?" is equally enthralling. Who cares? GBTW.
- thejuggernaut11, on 01/20/2009, -2/+18Is "unloaded the moving truck" some kind of sexual metaphor?
/confused - X9001, on 01/20/2009, -1/+16Actually they installed a web-cam....
- inactive, on 01/20/2009, -6/+20Entirely hypothetical.
- inactive, on 01/20/2009, -2/+15OMG A GIRL *FAP FAP FAP FAP FAP FAP!!!!!*
- johnomaz, on 01/20/2009, -1/+14For everyone just wondering what she looks like:
http://leahculver.com/images/leahculver-thumb.png - BoneheadFarker, on 01/20/2009, -0/+13Why? Is it due to being unfamiliar with handling the hordes of socially inept geeks tripping over themselves whenever you're around? Or is it due to being single around hordes of socially inept geeks all trying to work up the nerve to ask you out?
- etx313, on 01/20/2009, -0/+12Surely she gets the pick of the nerd litter.
- kgdoom, on 01/20/2009, -1/+13LOL. Holy ***** that's stupid.
- dtfinch, on 01/20/2009, -1/+12http://xkcd.com/385/
- generaleet, on 01/20/2009, -5/+16Please tell me more 2geek, but this time in a soft, sexy voice.
- BoneheadFarker, on 01/20/2009, -1/+12But...but...but...I am a nice guy...
Ok, seriously, I understand that some guys can't take a hint. Hell, I still have trouble even realizing hints are being thrown at me. And I also realise that some guys come off as sexist and condesending, even though they are probably just trying to show off what they consider to be their best qualities. But sometimes women are mean just because they can be. Especially when they believe they have their pick of any guy they want since so many guys are trying to talk to them. It's difficult to stand out in a crowd when you're a guy who's shy around women you're attracted to, and rather discouraging when you're slammed for making the attempt. I've had women laugh in my face. I've had women just roll their eyes and walk away. I've had women call me down to the lowest just for daring to say hi. It's not easy to make the attempt when you know there's a good chance that you'll be shot down hard for it. So you can at least feel good when one of these socially awkward guys (the nice shy ones, not the condescending dicks) comes up and talks to you, because that probably took them more courage then the smooth-talker you decide to go out with instead... - dext3r, on 01/20/2009, -3/+14Uh-huh, uh-huh. Go on, go on. May you provide photographic evidence of such an occurrence?
- scamper22, on 01/20/2009, -0/+10cout << "Hey Baby" << endl;
cout << "Ignore this guy. He is too immature." << endl ;
cout << "I am just right. Not too mature. Not too immature" << endl;
cout << "Now what's say I connect my output stream to your input stream?"
cout << "Don't worry I'm protected with the STL. I won't leak my memory over you or corrupt your stream." << endl;
count << "If all works out, we can derive a new class together. Don't worry. I'm not a fag like that Java guy. He only reproduces asexually if you know what I mean. Our child can inherit from both of us." << endl;
cout << "And don't worry baby. I'll protect you forever. You won't just die from some random garbage collector. I will protect you even when we're old and useless. I'll keep you alive baby until the end of the program." << endl;
cout << "So what do you say baby?" << endl;
string response;
cin >> something; - penguinxp, on 01/20/2009, -0/+10because when women work with numbers its witchcraft. duh.
- inactive, on 01/20/2009, -1/+10"I think women tend to be a lot more expressive, emotional and social, in a sense. With Girls In Tech, we wanted to have the networking and blog online, because that's a good resource, but there's more value in producing workshops, educational programs and lectures. From a socialization perspective, there's so much value in meeting in person and making that initial handshake. There are facial expressions that you share. People forget that, in the digital media age."
How is that any different from saying "I think Men tend to operate better in mission critical environments where emotion is useless and common sense, logic, along with a quick thinking head saves organizations millions of dollars." Why are Women allowed to point out what attributes they bring to the workplace but when Men say something good about themselves it's considered sexist. I'm offended because I'm expressive and emotional too! Where is the nearest HR employee?!?
Technology is all about centralization - it's also the one field where because of how "virtualized" it is there's no discrimination. Why do Women need resources isolated from the ton that are already out there? If she's good, she gets hired. If not, she doesn't. End of story.
Everyone should be required to interview in huge Barney suits with voiceboxes so their gender and color are hidden to the employer. That way we wouldn't have BS like this company trying to capitalize on feminism popping up. - ang48137, on 01/20/2009, -3/+12With regard to earlier comments, being a 'Girl in Tech' (I'm an EE) means constantly dealing with sexist ***** about either being 1.stupid or 2.ugly, because being smart and pretty must not be a logical combination.
- ohearn, on 01/20/2009, -1/+10I'm a girl in tech and it's not usually that bad for me at places I've worked. I am also a lesbian and usually pretty much seen as "one of the guys" half the time too, so maybe not a typical situation for other women in tech.
- diggface5000, on 01/20/2009, -0/+8Does it bother anyone else that they call it Girls in Tech? Isn't that still putting yourself one notch down from men right from the get go? When a club puts "boys" in the title, there are actually children in it.
- Narcism, on 01/20/2009, -0/+8I'm on Digg too! We have so much in common.
- rotundo, on 01/20/2009, -0/+7Yeah, right on. Though I've found that woman in actual tech don't make that big a deal out of it. They just do their work like everyone else. I imagine there are some extra annoyances being a woman in tech, and perhaps one of those is being asked "what's it like to be a woman in tech?" :)
- adrenalmedulla9, on 01/20/2009, -5/+12I know more than you do 'bout them, beeyotch.
So you live in Florida, eh? So do I! I'mma come to your house and beat you up. Ohhhh, yeah. - thejuggernaut11, on 01/20/2009, -1/+8You'll never lose your virginity with that kind of smooth talk'n.
- Ascus, on 01/20/2009, -0/+7Please all the Girls (and Boys) stay away from Tech. We like men and women here.
- Sherman901, on 01/20/2009, -2/+9There's a difference between 'What's it like to be a girl in tech?' and 'What's it like to be a babe in tech'
- tidu, on 01/21/2009, -0/+7It's okay, she's really hot.
http://images.net-actuality.org/news/01-01-08_0c5a ... - Biscuitz, on 01/20/2009, -2/+9Exactly.
It also doesn't help us women who actually try to work in this industry, and yet we're being shoved off because miss big *****, only in it for the attention, is in our way.
But of course, I'll be wrote off as "jealous". - chuckDontSurf, on 01/20/2009, -0/+6Isn't the standard misogynist comment supposed to include the word 'sammich'?
- MiDri, on 01/20/2009, -0/+6@rotunda: Lies! You've just been away from real women for so long that ugly ones seem hot. I know what it's like man, grew up in a small town, moved to a city, HOLY ***** how the ***** did I date the girls I dated in highschool?
- inactive, on 01/21/2009, -0/+6Wow, that's not just a casual fap, tha'ts serious business.
