- robwhite1979, on 11/03/2009, -0/+51The most interesting thing about this article is the fact that the author felt so much shame and embarrassment despite the fact that she had done nothing to deserve it. It's amazing how much a persons environment can influence who they become.
- Smokeydabear, on 11/03/2009, -4/+49Who HASN'T grown up in a Victorian house full of hookers? Christ!
- robwhite1979, on 11/03/2009, -0/+28Didn't the picture of the author at the top of the article give it away?
- Laminarcissus, on 11/03/2009, -4/+26Is it sweeps week on Digg?
- Kaegro, on 11/03/2009, -0/+21Christ did grow up in a Victorian house filled with hookers.
- aegis9975, on 11/03/2009, -3/+18This is not a traumatic story. She lived in house where there was prostitution occurring. So what? A lot of people grow up in tough neighborhoods where a lot worse happens.
- Vindexus, on 11/03/2009, -11/+23"When, at 19, I had my first boyfriend, I was frigid and nervous. "
I thought it was a guy writing until that part. - PrismoFillusion, on 11/03/2009, -1/+12So...why are you here?
- manicleek, on 11/03/2009, -0/+11People with bad grammar and poor spelling use reddit.
- thegreenspanput, on 11/03/2009, -0/+10you're probably going to get buried
- FormerBabby, on 11/03/2009, -4/+14I've heard much, much worse childhood horror stories than that.
- blackinthmiddle, on 11/03/2009, -0/+9Means it just happened without her having to force it out of her mom. The conversation just meandered towards the whole prostitution subject.
- askjeffro, on 11/03/2009, -0/+9Or the subtitle...?
"Jeanette Whitton was brought up in a Victorian house full of hookers. She talks about the men, the shame and the lies" - Jaster13, on 11/03/2009, -0/+8Wow. That user isn't even in Digg anymore. Did they get banned that fast?
- RealmDown, on 11/03/2009, -0/+7*****
- axb156, on 11/03/2009, -3/+9Growing up with prostitutes definitely taught her how to be an attention whore.
- waydee, on 11/03/2009, -0/+5Has it ever occurred to you that not everyone reads reddit?
We don't give a ***** that it's been on there before, we didn't see it. - JustinNoland, on 11/03/2009, -0/+5You need to work on your reading comprehension.
- BoneStamp, on 11/03/2009, -0/+5The domain "women.timesonline.co.uk" was also a pretty good clue.
- jemmrich, on 11/03/2009, -1/+6I thought that was an artsy picture of one of the prostitutes.
- elijahyossie, on 11/03/2009, -0/+4How can it have been on Reddit 2 weeks ago, when The Times published the article on 1st November this year?
- supermanly, on 11/03/2009, -0/+4Hah you're at -69 diggs
- bigkeeperrabbit, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3Loving you for a long, long time?
- collution, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3If I comment on an article, I'd probably want to read it first.
- Glassmentality, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3I accidently a prostitute the other day…my mistake.
- MonoDede, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3lmfao
- animeguru, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3Agreed, though I don't think the level of 'toughness' has anything to do with her disfunction. People who attempt to bury everything rather than confront it are going to be disfunctional.
Everyone has problems; normal people choose to come to terms with them rather than pretending that they lead a perfect life. - dancantone, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3They make a cream for that.
- gordonp, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2What does "come out organically" even mean?
- Kaegro, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2Exchanging sex for money?
- Smokeydabear, on 11/03/2009, -1/+3OH YEAH, but what were all those Vietnamese hookers doing in a Victorian house?
- techdever, on 11/03/2009, -1/+3in that particular order
- seltaeb4, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2No, he just left to get cigarettes.
- zhenya80, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1The title should be changed, what it feel like to grow up poor and be ashamed of it. What the hell do prostitutes have to do with it.
- friday1970, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1"I’m happy with who I am now. In fact, I feel I’ve done very well, considering."
My favorite line in the story. Overcame personal obstacles and made the best with what she had. She realized that she was the one who needed to change things, and she took it upon herself to make it to another life. I wish many here in America could read this and learn that the best way to make number one succeed is not through a government agency or hand outs, but through education and actively pursuing your own goals. - graemee, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1"Yeah", that was sarcasm
- FormerBabby, on 11/03/2009, -1/+2Die DIEEEEE!!!!! PEW PEW PEW PEW PEW.
- shadowspawn, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1It wasn't a whore-house. It was a place where hookers rented rooms to crash and turn the occasional trick. It sounds like they were casual ones too, otherwise the article would've had memories of all the ***** up sounds like fights, *****, fights while *****, etc.
Unless where she lived and in that time whores are different than they are now. I presume most guys were too ashamed and kept to themselves quietly while being serviced, they didn't get much traffic, and there wasn't much really going on.
A real story? Take the house and transplant the story to somewhere in a low-income/projects neighborhood. THEN... - diggdong, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1National Ping Pong team
- robwhite1979, on 11/03/2009, -2/+3Are you serious??
Mom: "Well sweety, just so you know I don't want you hanging out with those woman because they are prostitutes"
Author: "What's a prostitute mom?"
Mom: "A woman that has sex with men for money."
Author: "What is sex mom?"
Mom: "Well, it's when a man and a woman *yada yada yada*"
Author: "So sex is when men pay women for intercourse or other activities?"
Mom: "Not exactly dear, sex should only be between a man and a woman who are in love."
Author: "Then why do some men pay for sex?"
Mom: "Well honey, some men become so disenfranchised with life that they give up all hope of ever finding true love yet still need some form of sexual release..."
Yeah, that's a conversation you want to have with your pre-teen child...
--10 years passes, the author hits puberty and starts having sexual thoughts about men--
Author: "These urges are just so hard to overcome!! I only wish there was a man out there that was willing to pay me for sex!" - asnider, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1As short as my attention span can be, sometimes, I really wish the story was longer. You're right. It was rushed. It should have been twice as long, at a minimum.
- inactive, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1Thanks for the summing that up what I was supposed to get from that. Now I don't have to read it..
- Vindexus, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1I skipped the subtitle and the domain and I thought the picture was a prostitute.
- BoneStamp, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1There is a difference between a housekeeper and a french maid. It's time you realize your mom was a french maid.
- Fleagleman, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1I fully expected this to be an interview with Bruce Jenner.
- animeguru, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1What is more amazing is how much a parents ability to try to hide reality and teach their children how to lie to everyone around them creates people with no ability to function around others.
It reads somewhat like some kid in WoW complaining that girls suck because he never learned to interact with humans. - AmazingSteve, on 11/03/2009, -1/+1YOU'RE A HOOKER!!!!
- dancantone, on 11/03/2009, -3/+3Telling everyone you're gay during a nature walk?
Nocturnal emissions?
