- richmomz, on 07/01/2009, -12/+199Oh GOD - a 15 year-old bought a *knife*!? And not only that but he bought three more in less than an *hour*?! What is this world coming to? /s
When my dad was a kid his parents bought him a shotgun for his 12th birthday - and only after he had griped about not having one because most of the other kids in the neighborhood already had one. Back then if someone was walking down the street with a 30-.06 and full camo the neighbors would walk up and ask you how your hunting trip went (this was in a small town too, not out in the sticks). If that happened today people would have run screaming and CPS workers probably would have rounded up the entire neighborhood full of kids.
People seriously need to chill the ***** out. I feel sorry for the people in the UK that have to deal with this stupidity. Moreover there are people in the U.S. that would love to ban weapons to the point that it will be illegal to own non-plastic cutlery - I pray it never gets to that point. - imric, on 07/01/2009, -5/+115Let's see, I probably would have used a machete to, I don't know, CLEAR OUT UNDERBRUSH?
I hope they start calling for bans on forks, shovels, hammers, stapleguns, dinner knives, hatpins (oh what the hey, ALL pins), etc, etc.
I'm so glad I was not brought up in a 'nanny state'. - inactive, on 07/01/2009, -3/+91OMTG WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN??? BAN ***** EVERYTHING!!!
- Robustica, on 07/01/2009, -2/+83Dugg for an 80 pound white kid with a popped collar holding a machete.
- govtdoesnotwork, on 07/01/2009, -1/+49That's what I used a machete for at age 15. Somehow, I managed not to kill anyone...
- CrazyEddie041, on 07/02/2009, -0/+48"They found that 58 out of 72 websites selling knives were prepared to sell to children aged under 18, often because they failed to ask the buyer's age."
Oh, right. Making them click a button that says "I am over 18" is going to stop them. - geoboy, on 07/02/2009, -4/+43Sounds to me like the weapons are not to blame here. Stop fixating on the tools of violence and instead focus on ways to curb violent behavior.
Here's a hint: a stricter ban on knives won't do jack *****. - BREZZZ, on 07/02/2009, -0/+39I think the bigger outrage is that the kid spent £1.50 . I would be very concerned with the quality of that knife, and would imagine with a good whack or two the whole handle will break right off. So yeah, it is a dangerous knife in that sense. You are probably spending $10 on shipping alone, buy a better knife. I know it is just a sting operation, but jeez, spring a little. You get what you pay for.
- Jobe479, on 07/01/2009, -10/+46Glad I don't live in the UK.
- richmomz, on 07/01/2009, -11/+43Well of course there's a high knife crime rate if guns are banned. Criminals will use whatever implements they have access to and taking those implements away merely makes them resort to a different means. If knives are banned then I'm sure the rate of violent clubbings will skyrocket shortly thereafter, but the overall rate of violence will stay the same (or even get worse, as was the case after the gun ban a decade ago).
Maybe the solution isn't to ban every sharp object in existance, but rather allow people to carry guns again so if some punk tries to kill some poor dad and his daughter, said dad will actually have the means to defend his family from harm. Self-defense WORKS. - CoreyHalliwell, on 07/02/2009, -4/+34He wants to shove it up his butt because his mom canceled his WoW account.
- jounin9988, on 07/02/2009, -2/+32take away the knives and they'll use bats.
- failtrain, on 07/01/2009, -1/+30And how exactly do you prove your age online?
Age checks can be faked using someones elses details (using dead film stars works sometimes).
I'm not exactly going to send them my driving license or passport either, not that they could check it belongs to a person that isn't there.
Pre paid credit cards are also becoming more popular so that negates forcing people to use what was once an 18+ card.
The most you could possibly do without is simply ask them if they are over 18. Parents should be responsible for their children not limited to making sure they don't lie and break the law. They should take an interest in their kids activities and teach them right from wrong.
I thought my parents were pushy and nosy when I was growing up. Now that I am older I realise they were just trying to make sure I didn't grow up being a complete dick. They weren't perfect and I can still be an idiot at times but I havn't stabbed anyone yet. - superkendall, on 07/02/2009, -0/+29I'd rather have a kid with a machete than a switchblade. At least you know if someone is carrying a machete.
Next you'll be saying he can't have a proper broadsword either. - duceolsen, on 07/01/2009, -3/+27This is just ridiculous,
Are they restricting sales of scissors as well?
I hope whoever came up with such a dumb law gets a paper cut. - Digglet69, on 07/02/2009, -1/+22That's not a knife.
- spookyttws, on 07/02/2009, -0/+20"And how exactly do you prove your age online?"
I know I've been proving I'm 18 since I was 10. You just have to click that link on the porn site's splash screen that says "Yes I'm Over 18". - twiztidsinz, on 07/02/2009, -3/+21BAN PENCILS!
They are potential weapons. - CrazyEddie041, on 07/02/2009, -3/+21It's a SPACE STATION.
- IgorUnchained, on 07/02/2009, -4/+21I went to high school from 90-94.
We brought guns to school all the time.
One of the best stories from my school days involves a classmate putting a deer brain in his cousin's locker, who proceeded to hyperventilate and almost pass out when she opened her locker door.
The brain was to season the wood stock of the gun he had in his locker at the time......which he was going to do for a project in shop class. That was as common as making a wooden clock or a bong ever was....and we never had any problems.
To hear the UK complaining about "knife violence" and this story about fearing machetes.....I really wonder why they dont feel alot safer with no guns and a million CCTV cameras following their every step.
A winning soccer game is the leading cause of death in the UK....and they are still afraid? - Atomic1fire, on 07/02/2009, -0/+17Then they will all discover martial arts and we will have to ban limbs.
- Haptick, on 07/01/2009, -1/+18Well, the problem with strict gun control advocates is they fail to see that the problem isn't that people want to kill other people with guns, but rather that people want to kill other people to begin with. And if they do enforce ban on knives, forks, sporks, and spoons (let's not forget Alan Rickman's line of "I'll cut out his heart with a spoon!"), people can still strangle or curb-stomp each other, so they'll have to ban arms and legs too.
Though, it is amusing that most young British tourists I've met that come to the states want to shoot guns if they can get the opportunity. - Richandler, on 07/02/2009, -1/+17Sports Authority sells machetes on the shelf. I think it's funny seeing machete sitting their in it's plastic packaging with no one being murdered in the store.
- jounin9988, on 07/02/2009, -0/+16psh, i have 2 popped collars.
- jeffiek, on 07/01/2009, -2/+17I'm glad I wasn't brought up in a 'nanny state' either. Not so glad I've lived to see one.
- KingGorilla, on 07/02/2009, -1/+15God I wish I was as cool as him
- h4mx0r, on 07/02/2009, -0/+14pew pew pew
- dbaggerty, on 07/02/2009, -3/+17Ban ***** EVERYTHING!!! or Ban every ***** thing?
- geoboy, on 07/02/2009, -0/+14I recall an image that appeared on digg of a set of silverware (I mean basic spoon, fork, and butter knife set) from the U.K. that had a "must be 18 or older to purchase" warning label. I can't seem to find that pic to save my life right now.
- DeviantDragon, on 07/02/2009, -4/+18You know why this isn't a problem in the US? We have guns. Now people with legitimate needs for machetes and so forth will have to encounter even more ***** by the UK government to get their *****. This is taking it too far.
- NoamChimpsky, on 07/02/2009, -1/+14That must be some serious underbrush. Have you considered waxing?
- Hobbes24, on 07/02/2009, -3/+16i see your point.
WE MUST BAN PAPER AND ITS SHARP EDGES AS WELL! - user24, on 07/02/2009, -1/+14I feel really safe with all the CCTV. I'm secure in the knowledge that when I get mugged, the police will be able to post it onto wikileaks. I know that the criminals think twice before mugging people nowadays. They think "hmm, before I go and commit this crime I'd better think twice because there might be a tape in that CCTV, so when the crime gets reported in a day or so and I'm miles and miles away with this guys money, someone will have to review hours of footage to get a blurry shot of the top of my head"
I mean, if that's not a crime deterrent then I don't know what is! - draculthemad, on 07/02/2009, -2/+15I hear there are sticks of a pointy nature occasionally found just lying around.
Dont even get me started on "stones". - shiftkgb, on 07/02/2009, -2/+14I had a huge knife collection in high school, swords too. I still have a collection just not as big. I dont understand the issue at all really with just owning something.
- dieboldcracy, on 07/02/2009, -3/+15Geez Britain, you take away the guns and you're shocked at the knife problem. Go ahead, take away the knives and then you'll be having 16 yr olds testing online shovel sales
- TheDHC, on 07/02/2009, -1/+13Whatever you say, Hentailover420.
- joshuaer, on 07/02/2009, -3/+15I had a machete like that when i was 10, my dad got me 7 ninja stars when i was 10 as well, considering i was shooting BB and pellet guns since i was about 5 and i shot my first deer at 13. I do not really see the big deal with a 15 year old having knifes. Assuming his parents teach him from right and wrong and how to respect weapons like mine did.
Some people no matter what the age will never respect a weapon and hurt some one by mistake or out of anger with one. But that same person would most likely do the same with a fork from the kitchen. - inactive, on 07/02/2009, -3/+14*****, no one seems to have gotten the crocodile dundee reference :(((
- darknecross, on 07/02/2009, -2/+13"President UK! Some 15 year old white kid with a popped collar just bought a bigass knife on the internet!"
"BAN. *****. EVERYTHING." - dsfjvhbd, on 07/02/2009, -0/+11Just go through your household and count the items that you could strangle stab or suffocate someone with or that are hard and heavy enough to break someones skull. With their way of thinking, eventually all those items would have to be redesigned.
- fluidfoundation, on 07/01/2009, -1/+11Young Locke's about to go on a walkabout.
- ryanonfire, on 07/02/2009, -0/+10£1.50 That's a bargain!
- spookyttws, on 07/02/2009, -2/+11I've been working in the restaurant industry since I was 13 and now (10 years later) have amassed several thousand dollars in very nice Japanese Knives. I have no issue with selling a knife to a 15 year old, but then again I live in the US and have a somewhat different view of knives than most people.
- KrayzieKyd, on 07/02/2009, -2/+11What knife? That's clearly a letter opener.
- KingGorilla, on 07/02/2009, -0/+9I see you've played Knifey Spoony before
- Barackalypse, on 07/02/2009, -1/+10Britain will find it is a never ending battle against things that can be effectively used as weapons and the further along that path they go, the stupider they will look. Baseball bats, pipes, hammers, wrenches, and all manner of useful tools can cause massive damage if the wielder intends to cause harm. In 20 years your average Little League team here will be considered a violent street gang in the UK.
- toejamz, on 07/02/2009, -1/+10A good machete is hard to find, and is usually very expensive because they are so long.
But, it's not hard to find an old wood-saw. You know, the kind made of 1/12 inch thick spring steel, with a wooden handle? Spring steel is very hard and makes a good knife edge that lasts a long time and can be very sharp. It takes a few minutes with a grinder to make the conversion - you just have to be careful not to let it get too hot or it softens the metal and ruins your "knife". Use copious amounts of water/oil on your blades to keep 'em cool!
So, for a buck or two at a yard sale, and 30 minutes at a commonly available shop grinder, you have a nice machette that will outperform almost any commercially available equivalent. that would cost $100 or more, though it wouldn't look near as nice...
Oh, and parent story is Far]<ing retarded. - robbob, on 07/02/2009, -1/+10narc
- TheFuzzyOne, on 07/02/2009, -0/+9Four knives in one hour? Is that supposed to be terrifying? I could buy a dozen in a few seconds on ebay.
