- dwninjungleland, on 11/02/2007, -29/+62No, he was not. this is as dumb as those people folding dollar bills because they think someone was predicting the 9/11 attacks. Chaplain was also speaking for his time, and basically every other period in human history as well. Don't be so self-centered to assume that everything that has ever happened in the history of the world has a special relevance to the now, and that people who happened to have influence in the past has some sort of prescience to 'predict' our current situation. I won't finish without one last insult so: toolbag.
- inactive, on 10/25/2007, -3/+30Chaplin not Chaplain.
- malakite33, on 10/25/2007, -0/+19The video gave me chills, not because it was a prediction but because even 60 years ago the message of freedom was ringing and we are struggling with the issue still today. I hope in my lifetime we can come to a place where these kind of messages are the mainstream and not the fanatical.
- empraptor, on 10/25/2007, -2/+20"Was he able to see into the future? Or just way ahead of his time?"
Neither. The same ***** happened then. The same ***** is happening now. - ryouko, on 10/25/2007, -1/+18Relative to current times or not, it was a good speech
- mrgreenjeans, on 10/25/2007, -2/+17You forgot the creepy "heh, heh," laugh. http://politicalhumor.about.com/library/blbushism- ...
- Ghoztt, on 10/25/2007, -0/+14I just watched The Great Dictator last week for the very first time. Very good movie.
That speech as absolute brilliance. Charlie Chaplain is the man. - Gigabutt, on 10/25/2007, -0/+11Relevant to many periods of history, but conveyed in rhetoric unparalleled by any presidential candidate.
- Patogrande, on 10/25/2007, -6/+16No.
- u2u2u2, on 10/25/2007, -2/+11lol...and there is no upper class that rule over us uh?
- thebrawl, on 10/25/2007, -0/+9Is there any evidence for that?
- RollFizzlebeef, on 10/26/2007, -2/+11"George Bush is NOT Hitler...he would be, if he applied himself." - Margaret Cho
- chocobomog, on 10/25/2007, -6/+15True, but this is the internet. For every 1 person who understands it is a joke, there are 10 people who will treat it as the unquestionable truth and will go around quoting it in every thread and annoy the hell out of the rest of us.
- inactive, on 10/25/2007, -5/+13That's freaking scary
- Tomboys, on 10/25/2007, -2/+10Why do you have a digg account? You've only dugg 240 things yet you've left 4,159 comments that as far as I can tell are mostly negative. Does this make you feel like a man? Does that make you feel superior? Clever?
- jeff419, on 10/25/2007, -5/+13Chaplain didn't predict anything, it was my friends cat that predicted the whole thing. Wait til you see what's going to happen next.
- RST1123, on 10/25/2007, -3/+11Sounded like the intro to Bioshock.
- inactive, on 10/25/2007, -1/+8if u don't look 'british white' you're suspected of anything nowadays.
nazis are back. - Tomboys, on 10/25/2007, -11/+18It was kind of joke. Are you always so literal?
- superyounan1, on 10/25/2007, -0/+6Chaplain was a suspected socialist and was secretly monitored and tracked by the FBI or some other agency, not sure which. I just thought it would be an interesting tidbit, I find it interesting that this goofy man that people laughed at for his silly antics on the screen was actually a very introspective, thoughtful, and multidimensional person
- bwtaha, on 10/25/2007, -6/+12Chaplain was making fun of Hitler, even though Hitler got the mustache from Chaplain, and not vice versa, Hitler was that guy that laughs with everyone else cause he doesn't realize the jokes are at his expense, he liked Chaplain so he emulated him through the stache
- czeman, on 10/25/2007, -0/+6Oh, come on! Don't ***** drag Charlie Chaplin into this!
- DiggMasterJ, on 10/25/2007, -1/+7We voted in Democrats didn't we? So much for that. We live in a world where Bush is the decider, I believe that is a dictatorship. If Bush were not a dictator then he wouldn't be able to say ***** you to judicial and congressional oversight the way he does and get away with it.
- Tomboys, on 10/25/2007, -0/+6LOL I know. I do that in my head every time I read it.
- u8eR, on 10/25/2007, -1/+6Chaplin was satirizing Hitler in The Great Dictator, not predicting the future. Simple. Watch the movie and appreciate its message for what is it is, not what you hope it to be.
- Repeater2000, on 10/25/2007, -2/+7Not seeing the OP's point at all.
But great clip, thanks for sharing. - adooga, on 10/25/2007, -0/+5Serious question: How old are you?
I'm not trying to be rude, I really would like to know how you could have not heard of Charlie Chaplain.
No offense intended :) - jkleinfeld, on 10/25/2007, -2/+7Sorry to sound so cynical, but if anyone here has read the Communist Manifesto, seems to me like this speech was ripped straight from its pages.
Take away any rhetoric about the Soviet Union, North Korea or Cambodia (which were never Communist states, except for Leninist USSR) and just think pure Marxist theory. The similarities are too similar to be dismissed that easily.
He even shouts out 'Unite!' - hiphoc, on 10/25/2007, -1/+6That's history. Chaplin knew what many people knew at the time but what has been removed from school text books. Greed and lack of feeling for your fellow man of any race or sex is what causes war and death. From ancient Egypt till now, the evil worm their way into power. Tell lies against others to start wars of profit and control. Rome, Greece, Sparta, Babylon, Egypt, Gaul, Japan, China, England, Mayans'. The same tactics have been used over and over again. When we learn as a people that we can be manipulated into war, war will end. Say what you will, Mel Gibson's Apocolypto tried to say this. You have the corrupt leaders of the major city areas, feeding and exploiting the smaller weaker tribes. They do this to exercise power and to entertain their people and show their power to the masses. All of our fore fathers and great thinkers in this country knew the danger from within. Now we know also.
- kindrobot, on 10/25/2007, -1/+6Shut up and train for a vocation, worker.
- r0b1, on 10/28/2007, -12/+16NO, HE WAS TALKING ABOUT RON PAUL USING UBUNTU
- adooga, on 10/25/2007, -0/+4He left America after being hounded by the anti-communist witch hunters, but I'm not sure if there was any truth to their allegations (there usually wasn't).
Many, many people who simply disagreed with their government were branded as communists and cut off from society, especially people who could potentially gain the ear of the public.
It's a fascinating piece of history to study, particularly in light of the attitudes to political expression which appear to be taking root in America today. - kuchino, on 10/25/2007, -0/+4This is why history is so important, so we don't repeat the same mistakes our grandfathers have done, this is why this speech is so important to us now, if we don't learn from our pasts and do different things. we will have no right to move on in life and make a new history for our selves.
- hadak, on 10/25/2007, -0/+4What do they teach in schools now-a-days?
- Frosty122, on 10/25/2007, -2/+6no, Chaplin was a jew, Hitler hated Chaplin, and the mustache was called a toothbrush mustache.a popular look at the time...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toothbrush_moustache - jorgepblank, on 10/25/2007, -0/+4This was also put at the end of "How to create an Angry American" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgfzqulvhlQ
- Philbert, on 10/25/2007, -0/+4Robin Williams is a funny guy and good actor, but he's no Chaplin.
- carbonetc, on 10/25/2007, -0/+4Various intelligent people have been warning us about politicians like Bush for millennia. Bush isn't the first, and won't be the last.
Now, if only the public actually heeded these warnings. - Philbert, on 10/25/2007, -0/+4Very impressive, especially for his first speaking role in a film. On a side note I just noticed that Chaplin died in the same year I was born.
- hollowex, on 10/25/2007, -1/+5That statement would be true if anyone said it. Dictatorships are easier... if you're the dictator. It's actually a knock on dictatorships...
- fcukbush, on 10/25/2007, -0/+4For a man wearing a fake Hitler mustache, he talks a lot of sense.... We need to listen to him.
- antipoet, on 10/25/2007, -0/+3Not that I'm a fan of what Reagan did, but did you just use his name in the same sentence as Bush's?
- Goldbricker, on 10/25/2007, -1/+4Of course it wasn't "predicting" anything. However, the spirit of the speech is as timely today as it was in his time.
- HydroSliders, on 10/25/2007, -5/+8I think the answer is: Could be.
- havokzero, on 10/25/2007, -1/+4Why is everyone here focusing on the obviously ridiculous title? This is a remarkable speech by a great man.
The context isn't as important as the content. Am I the only person here who feels awe struck after watching this? - ZenMojo, on 10/25/2007, -0/+3True about the first part, wrong about the rest.
- inactive, on 10/31/2007, -0/+2no
- bethebryant, on 10/26/2007, -1/+3Did you just quote Margaret Cho? Wow... Dugg down for absolutely no taste in comedy.
- ZenMojo, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2Why not? He bombed half of Latin America to ***** and sold weapons to the Iranians.
