- eastwood24, on 05/20/2009, -32/+706As much as I personally hate this private schools decision, they are a private institution and can discriminate if they choose to.
You don't want big brother meddling too much in private companies and you don't want private companies meddling too much in the government. - walker4bc, on 05/20/2009, -21/+422Wow, that is kind of shocking, especially in California. But I can imagine how shocking that photo of two high school girls hugging must have been...
- AbsurdParadox, on 05/20/2009, -12/+413Yeah, I wish more people would understand that this is absolutely within the rights of the school, assuming it doesn't break any contractual obligations.
It is, of course, also stupid. - Throneofeden, on 05/20/2009, -36/+341Uh, Private schools ARE allowed to discriminate. They're not funded by public money and therefore are allowed to do whatever the hell they want.
There's nothing wrong with what happened. - wannaBdug, on 05/20/2009, -5/+291Oh man I could use a hug.
- borez, on 05/20/2009, -7/+229Oh man I could use two lesbians.
- staticneuron, on 05/20/2009, -12/+215A "Lutheran" High School. This means a private religious institution right?
Who cares? They can do whatever they want. - SexyGeekGirl, on 05/20/2009, -3/+190yeah girls hugging - how absolutely risque' !
- borez, on 05/20/2009, -6/+176When you're not invited.
- storiz, on 05/20/2009, -5/+127they should just shut down myspace. then kids could hug in peace
- billricardi, on 05/20/2009, -11/+131Well, there's something WRONG with what happened, just nothing illegal.
I just hope that they don't find any religious grounds to keep out black people, Mexican people, people who have genetic defects, people who aren't pretty, etc etc. - tcheck, on 05/20/2009, -5/+124This doesn't shock me; I go to private school and am pro gay rights, but I know that they have the authority to expel students on whatever grounds they want.
Private schools = private rules. - mooshcala, on 05/20/2009, -0/+116Well they can't use you.
- Navid19, on 05/20/2009, -26/+141seriously, when did lesbianism become a crime?
- AtomicTheory, on 05/20/2009, -9/+123It is never referenced as a crime. It's a private school, so they should get to make the rules as they wish. I don't get the big deal. If they want to expel people for wearing green socks, then they are well within their rights to do so.
- paradisetonight, on 05/20/2009, -3/+94So is lesbianism the belief in lesbians?
- vivalanation734, on 05/20/2009, -5/+90Fact... Private Schools = their own set of rules = GTFO when they tell you to.
- pingpants, on 05/20/2009, -5/+88Jane Doe and Mary Roe, also seen on Facebook hugging teddy bears.
- paulmwaltz, on 05/20/2009, -4/+81They should just find another school! Seems like the most obvious answer. :P
- TheXboxReview, on 05/20/2009, -0/+75People need to make their MySpace & Facebook profiles private.
- todthebod, on 05/20/2009, -5/+80send them to my school
- rydawg09, on 05/20/2009, -7/+78Pics or it didn't happen.
- insertAliasHere, on 05/20/2009, -8/+79It _is_ the most obvious answer.
I'm not anti-gay at all, I want to see a country where they can marry freely, but I support this decision too.
It's a ***** Christian school! People get so upset when Christians want to teach creation in public schools. But this is no different, trying to get a Christian school to accept secular morals.
If the state could force private schools to accept students that they don't want then the school isn't private anymore, is it? It's just another state school with no state funding that you'd have to pay to go to.
Honestly, if you don't like what a PRIVATE organization that you belong to is doing, just leave it and join another that you do like, or become part of a public one. Don't go to court and try to change it.
@ mrsteveman1, if it were a state funded and sponsored school, then yes, I'd say that this would be terrible. But it's not. - Locupleto, on 05/20/2009, -8/+76Anyone who knows anything about private schools knows this is really a matter of the families not donating enough.
- BryanTravers, on 05/20/2009, -1/+65What the hell is the point of one lesbian?
- zinc6471, on 05/20/2009, -8/+66no its Riverside, during the presidential elections, riverside county voters were predominately republicans
- supradave, on 05/20/2009, -6/+63While discrimination is wrong, it is a private institution.
My house is a private residence and I don't have to let people in based on whatever criteria I could think of, such as stupid people and religious zealots.
If there's no public funds going to this school, then there's nothing wrong with who they let in. - ModernDayDarwin, on 05/20/2009, -13/+69sadly, you're right.
- pathouston22, on 05/20/2009, -5/+61California: Dosn't support gay marriage, lesbianism, or a balanced budget.
- thecoolestguy, on 05/20/2009, -2/+52private schools are allowed to discriminate. They're not using public money.
- MWeather, on 05/20/2009, -2/+51I don't see why discriminating based on sexual orientation would be illegal, considering private schools can discriminate based on gender.
- jwardphoto, on 05/20/2009, -9/+55This is all very true but it's still *****.
- pinchduck, on 05/20/2009, -5/+50It's that whole "Separation of Church & State" thing. The government cannot tell religious institutions what to believe or do.
- mohsenxp, on 05/20/2009, -4/+492009 called, it wants to know where America is.
- Craig304958, on 05/20/2009, -7/+50Actually, it does rather explain it. Sexuality of all kinds is one of the GOP's favorite hot-button issues because it's nicely divisive and raises deep, personal fears about other people's behavior (not to mention the person in the mirror, but DON'T LOOK AT THAT). It's a distillation of post-Nixon GOP hot-button politics. If that's the local political climate, of *course* the local judge reflects it.
- elnerdo, on 05/20/2009, -17/+59"sadly"
Why is it sad that a private school can make its own rules? I think that it's very good - lutafin, on 05/20/2009, -5/+47Why two? Isn't one enough you selfish bastard, learn to share dammit.
- xobecide, on 05/20/2009, -0/+42I believe.
- piradians, on 05/20/2009, -1/+42Gotta keep her happy too...
- ciano, on 05/20/2009, -2/+41But this is a religious institution. If lesbianism is against their religious views, they shouldn't have to allow lesbians to attend any more than they should be made to allow atheists or Hindus to attend. It would be stupid to force a religious school to let in people whose beliefs conflict with their religion's, even if it's something trivial like orientation.
- Powerfan5000, on 05/20/2009, -1/+39Is a bisexual agnostic?
- sonnybobiche, on 05/20/2009, -5/+43This is a Lutheran high school. Their services are not government-provided, and their students are not employees. They are therefore not beholden to state or federal anti-discrimination laws. The DA would have a better case against the Archdiocese's discriminatory appointment of priests.
You may not like the real-world implications of the verdict, but you can't really make the argument that it contradicts the law. - SifooD, on 05/20/2009, -0/+36http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o125/jarinudom/ ...
Nothing wrong with this. Stupid HS. - sdbyrd, on 05/20/2009, -2/+35Taxpayer money buys books, computers and other supplies? I think not. At least not the private school I went to. They received absolutely no taxpayer money whatsoever.
- iamheero1, on 05/20/2009, -1/+34whooosh
- mksmothers, on 05/20/2009, -13/+44As long as the high school accepts NO funding whatsoever, this shouldn't be an issue. The market will take care of this.
- DivisibleByZero, on 05/20/2009, -3/+34The private school I went to as a kid didn't get ***** to pay for supplies, and I'm pretty sure the same held true for tuition reimbursements (aside possible tax deductions considering it a "charitable donation"... which it was).
- verynegative, on 05/20/2009, -2/+32I say expelling them would be doing the girls a favour. Who the ***** would want to go to a school like that?
Its because ***** like this that religion is becoming unpopular everyday. - RandomGorilla, on 05/20/2009, -1/+29Oh my god! This could lead to dancing or interracial relations!! WE MUST PUT A STOP TO THIS!!
Really though that's just ***** stupid. - bipolarruledout, on 05/20/2009, -1/+29I don't know...I hugged a guy the other day and next thing you know I was knee deep in his ass....I'm not even gay! It happens!
