I'm sure that's the tactic used by most con artists who don't have access to high-tech equipment. That's how pickpockets can work together to rob you. Idiotic, until you fall for it and realize how easy it is to get distracted.

    also, don't most bank accounts have daily withdrawal limits for ATMs around $300 or so? how would they empty out $20,000 from a bank account? over 2 months?
