2. Hire brilliant people to write script
3. Take credit
4. Profit!! - Altotus, on 11/05/2009, -1/+15Actually, Jobs does get one thing right: he doesn't friggin' type a novel on your slides and then just read it off during the presentation! I hate it when people do that. That, and no stacks consisting of nothing but slide-after-slide of bullet points. Seeing that crap makes me want to slap some people and and give them a remedial course on public speaking in the PowerPoint era...
- Smokeydabear, on 11/05/2009, -2/+13Steve Jobs is so successful because he employs "ass pennies".
- b4rb3qu3, on 11/05/2009, -2/+11Serve Kool-Aid at the door.
- jj101, on 11/05/2009, -1/+7No idea is original. Xerox sold it to Apple, they didn't steal it. Also Apple were heavily critisised for introducing the mouse (they left the cursor keys off teh keyboard to force people to use the mouse and force devs to code for it).
Apple are clearly a big, profit-seeking entity, like any large corporation, and one that goes to obsessive lengths to be secretive, but give credit where its due. Any other company could have bought the OS of Xerox but they didn't because it was not obvious what a great idea it was until it was obviously a great idea. - 1nhuman, on 11/05/2009, -0/+5I wonder if Jobs analyses his presentations like this. I suspect he mostly uses his gut feeling. Copying Steve Jobs doesn't make you a better presenter, perhaps a slightly worse one.
- strax, on 11/05/2009, -0/+5The interview looks and sounds like a poorly done infomercial, where the interviewer is given the questions to ask by the interviewee. And the author clearly has not learned how to present from Steve Jobs, he sounds forced and fake, again like an infomercial. BusinessWeek is not what it used to be.
- dullnation, on 11/05/2009, -0/+5Boom.
- djbittner, on 11/05/2009, -1/+5Has anyone seen a worse interviewer? The guy was painful.
- Mediaright, on 11/05/2009, -0/+4Frankly, this is all dead obvious stuff. I've watched all of his keynotes since 97 (they're not hard to find, and frankly kinda fun to watch), and...if you actually buy this book, than...you've got bigger problems.
- jj101, on 11/05/2009, -3/+7Sounds like a sensible plan to me. The taking credit part is harsh but then look at what happended to teh company when he they fired him. And look what he did. The man is quite clearly very smart and has a lot of input in terms of guiding his brilliant staff.
- 1nhuman, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3I know your pain.
It's even worse when you pay 1000 euro (or $) a day for some IT course and have them do that. - Smokeydabear, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3No I'm not, when you use ass pennies you have the advantage over a lot of people.
- VitriolAndAngst, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2I found this article useful.
I think Steve Jobs is VERY aware of what he does in his presentations. He had Keynote built to specifically cater to what he wanted to do in his presentations. And that app is a trade secret behind the scenes at many conventions now.
When I watch a Steve Jobs keynote, the idea foremost in my mind, is how I'm going to do some really cool things with this new whatever. He does not get in the way of your FANTASY. Whatever you think of him, he is a consummate showman. Those reality distortion fields don't just create themselves, people.
I'm going to get this book, likely. There are only a few other presenters out there who do as good a job as Steve Jobs. - themastersb, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2...and one more thing...
- Altotus, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2You're just saying that to get people to Google for "ass pennies". Not that there's anything wrong with that.
- proberge, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2Yes I am thinking the same thing. He looked nervous, very uncomfortable and uncharismatic.
- jj101, on 11/05/2009, -1/+2Lol. Apologies for epically terrible spelling above!
@rheaume - is anyone that naive? - rheaume, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1Of course! But lets see the people that believe Jobs takes it from paper to retail himself digg me down

- junkneo, on 11/05/2009, -3/+3Steve Jobs sees tech devices as an art on the surface and utilitarian on the inside, while others see them as utilitarian both in and out. The same goes with his showmanship.
- deslock, on 11/05/2009, -2/+1What?
No, it's brownies at Apple parties. - Hercules, on 11/05/2009, -3/+2Steve Jobs isn't a good presenter, his audience is just full of fanboys so it seems that way.
