"Levy won the prize for his part in the development of a drug used in the treatment of many types of cancer that is being widely viewed as revolutionary.
For over 30 years, Levy has researched methods of using the body's immune system to fight cancer. His researched led to the development of the concept that a drug made from antibody could be used to fight cancer."
The article focuses more on Stanford professor Ronald Levy's great treatment as a Jew while in Saudi Arabia, but the research that won him the award is quite encouraging. - Kraviwannabe, on 04/17/2009, -3/+45Amazing, given that it was only a few years ago the Saudi Government website said; Americans of Jewish religion would be denied travel visas!
- pookydirt, on 04/17/2009, -2/+44That's awesome! Except the sanitizing omission in biography... but good news otherwise! (All including his treatment in Saudi Arabia, his prize recognition.... AND his wonderful work!)
- booksnmore4you, on 04/17/2009, -0/+37Fabulous!
Medical training and care in Saudi Arabia is to a very high standard, although the working conditions in hospitals are not good (too few docs, too many hours) and care is uneven. - tzvika613, on 04/17/2009, -1/+34This is great news. It would have been unheard of just a few years ago and might signal a real change in the Middle East.
- thoughtsonthis, on 04/17/2009, -0/+27Kudos to Dr. Levy! Anything anyone can do to fight, and maybe bring about the cure to cancer, has my highest respect.
- booksnmore4you, on 04/17/2009, -1/+27Imagine this:
Because he's an excellent medical scientist who is an understanding and respetcful and tolerant person who has contributed significantly to Saudi Arabian medical care, and because Saudi Arabia really does have a stream of progressives within the government. Could it be?
FACT: Saudi Arabia has a long history of medical cooperation among nations and ethnic groups. That's exactly how they reached a very high level of medical care! Also, if you are one of the brightest students in your country, you can compete for a set-aside slot in King Faisal School of Medicine and attend for free, and attend a residency in the country, with a 4 or 5 years service requirement afterward. I had a South Korean anatomy professor at UCal who did this. - inactive, on 04/17/2009, -1/+27That's a real achievement. Religion should not be a hurdle for success and honor in life. We should always appreciate people without indulging in such issues.
- frofisrael, on 04/17/2009, -9/+24May God bless King Faisal!
- inactive, on 04/17/2009, -0/+13That's like the first uplifting news I've heard in a while.
- LonelyTylenoL, on 04/17/2009, -2/+14There is only one true race...Human
There is only one true religion...Peace - dalittle, on 04/17/2009, -1/+13I think it is a bit sad that religion enters into this at all. True medical practice knows no race or religion (Hippocratic Oath).

When the religion first started off back when Muhammad was alive, you would know that he preached religious tolerance.
You're just thinking about Radical Islam. ...You know, the media can choose which stories they report. And they usually only choose the ones that get good ratings. - eigenweasel, on 04/17/2009, -0/+9Although there is apparently an abundance of retarded platitudes.
- LonelyTylenoL, on 04/17/2009, -0/+9@Aparthed
FYI- I'm Jewish. - BossKey, on 04/17/2009, -0/+7So you want to know who was late to the tolerance game, eh...?
When the Moors (Arabs) conquered Spain, they allowed Christians and Jews to continue practicing their religion in the conquered cities.
Hundreds of years later, when our Christians reconquered Spain, guess what they did: Repressed, expelled (and worse) the Jews, Moors, and even Protestants from the same cities, and got started on that whole Inquisition thing...the point of which was "to ensure the orthodoxy of recent converts" to Catholicism. Now that's tolerance. - RuSTeDs, on 04/17/2009, -0/+7The progress in Saudi Arabia made by its current king (Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz) is quite positive. He just did a shakedown of the "commision of vice and virtue" otherwise known as the "religious police" by getting rid of old coots and making young people join. He also did a shakedown of his cabinet by appointing western-educated saudis AND a woman for the first time ever. Recently, he's been giving royal pardons to people who have been imprisoned on frivolous charges such as "meeting a stranger" or whatever. He set up a body that takes care of marriage issues and one of its charters is that women's consensus will be absolutely required in marriages. Sadly, marriages in rural areas which are not reported to the government slip through. Best of all though, he has destroyed every major terrorist cell over there and confiscated thousands of weapons. Just last week, 12 Al Qaida terrorists were killed in a shoot out with Saudi Police forces. Pakistan should frickin learn something from SA.
The very best humanitarian thing Saudi Arabia has been doing is performing surgeries to normalize conjoined twins from around the world, free of charge, all expense paid by the King himself. Besides requiring the absolute best surgeons in the world, these operations last continuous 20 hours and require the assistance of 50 or so medical professionals and the surgery is very intensive. Saudi Arabia has the highest success rate of a surgery of this kind. But the only downside is that King Abdullah of Saudi arabia is around 86 years old. If he bites the dust, we don't know who's in line. He could be a radical (like king Khaled) or a reformer, like the current King.
Here's the website:

If you know any parents who are suffering because of their baby's conjoined-twin birth, let them know. - psYcon, on 04/17/2009, -0/+6There is only one true God ... (fill in the blank)
- non00b, on 04/17/2009, -0/+6This is encouraging.
You can't deny the contributions of Jewish people (whether they affiliate themselves with their background or not) to modern science and medicine. - AboveandBeyond, on 04/17/2009, -2/+8is jew a racist word now? we can't even say that now? omg...
- Rain12913, on 04/17/2009, -0/+6Completely unrelated.
However, the man in that article is not a Physician. He's violated the Hippocratic Oath and should be stripped of his license. - rag_one, on 04/17/2009, -1/+6Wow! I bet Cartman is ***** his pants! :-)
- inactive, on 04/17/2009, -0/+5I'll digg that.

- LonelyTylenoL, on 04/17/2009, -1/+4I'm saying there are idiotic "doctors" out in the world who don't follow the Hippocratic oath.
- LonelyTylenoL, on 04/17/2009, -0/+3Technically being a Jew can be an ethnic background as well as a religion.
For example, I have a Jewish friend who is atheist but still participates in Hanukkah and Passover. The two holidays are both not really tied to religion and god as much as Shabbat is. - CosmoKramer, on 04/17/2009, -3/+6Dude, you just dropped a hard J there.
~Sunny in Philadelphia - PowderedToasty, on 04/17/2009, -0/+3People often use "Jew" as a careless insult, as in "don't Jew me". When referencing a person you would usually say they are "Jewish". It's mostly about tone I guess, as with all other groups. It's not really polite to call a Japanese person a Jap for example.

I can't even believe a doctor could be such an idiotic dbag. Not treating a baby because the parents have pierced ears and tattoos. That doctor and his practice are a disgrace to common sense. - bills534, on 04/17/2009, -0/+2Just the way its worded, browsing through the stories that title just caught my attention. I honestly don't care either way. just wondered if anybody else thought that title seemed odd.

- inactive, on 04/17/2009, -3/+5That's MESHUGGE! If an Arab can honor a Jew, then there's hope yet.
- faridx82, on 04/17/2009, -0/+2and you know, the meaning of islam is PEACE
- sciencelovesyou, on 04/18/2009, -0/+2There isn't really an equivalant Nobel Prize in Israel BUT the Righteous Gentile Award (which is sorta a catch-all for kick-ass people) has been given to 60 muslims over the years. Plus they just posthumously awarded Khaled Abdulwahab for helping save Sephardic Jews (Arabic speaking Jews) in North Africa.
- fleischner, on 04/17/2009, -0/+2Not exactly, but similar to the difference between calling someone "a black" versus "a black person."
- seedsofwar, on 04/17/2009, -0/+1hey, article poster. I was told it's offensive to use "Jew", even if you're talking about someone who is in fact a Jew. i'm not offended, i just want to know why i can't call someone who's Jewish a Jew. is it because of the hard "J"?
- jumpenjack, on 04/17/2009, -0/+1best comments of the day tylenol
- sciencelovesyou, on 04/17/2009, -0/+1... you are aware that Dr. Levy is an American, yes?
Not all Jews represent Israel. That's like saying that all Americans of English descent are representative of England. - rxbudian, on 04/17/2009, -0/+1That's awesome news, it's good to have one's contribution to humanity be rewarded but whoever wrote that article needs some learning on writing a positive article. It shows a number of negatives on a positive news. 1. Levy didn't expect to win from an Arab competition, but he did. 2 He didn't expect to be able to get a visa for him and his family, but he got them. 3. the author took note that the line showing his work at the Weizmann Institute had been deleted.
After reading the article, it gave me the impression that the author and Levy is prejudiced and the Saudis are open minded. The article shows that the Arabs are progressing, but doesn't show that the Jewish community are. It gives a bad impression of the Jews. - PHiZiK, on 04/17/2009, -0/+1just one thing no one ever calls it "Arab Nobel Prize"......it's called "King Faisal International Prize" and it's the second most famous international prize after Nobel Prize.
- PommyBrit, on 04/17/2009, -2/+3Could you imagine a Zionist doing the reciprocal?
