Triplets Born to Family That Lost Three Children a Year Ago
cbs2.com — Lori and Chris Coble of Ladera Ranch, who lost three children in a freeway accident almost one year ago, announced the birth of triplets Wednesday night. The babies -- two girls and a boy -- are listed in good condition at Children's Hospital at Mission. They were born each one minute apart.

- bamafun, on 05/09/2008, -7/+67awesome news - out of tragedy comes joy ! Nice to hear good news for a change =)
- Vindexus, on 05/09/2008, -7/+42Well not OUT OF tragedy, more like after. The tragedy didn't cause the joy, it just preceded it.
- worldchanger, on 05/09/2008, -8/+8split hairs much?
- AtomicTheory, on 05/09/2008, -2/+8You're exactly right. You, sir, are a scholar and a gentleman.
- crweaks23, on 05/09/2008, -2/+7I found him rather shallow and pedantic.
- uhhNo, on 05/09/2008, -6/+5I can't imaging how having triplets can be considered a joy. Three screaming babies, then 3 people going to university/ college at the same time? Ouch.
- NoCt1, on 05/09/2008, -0/+10maybe they didnt want three kids again.. just a thought.. maybe they were going to be like.. ok..
- Hangly, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1:D
- diktator279, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1***** YEAH
- frostbyt, on 05/09/2008, -9/+2Wait a second. You said "Good news" this is horrible news. Not only has the man been tricked into having the first 3 children who clearly ruined his wifes once shapely body. He has been tricked YET again! She is so selfish that she had to have more children to fill some empty guilty void in her sad life. Clearly she took some pregnancy pills to conceive triplets in this point in her life. THAT is the most selfish part about this story. Pregnancy pills are for people who want something so bad for them they will do whatever it takes. Even if your body knows it can not conceive on it's own you know it can and force it to become infected with child.
- dwray82, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3I'm sensing some much deeper issues here. Lie on the couch and start from the beginning.
- SpeakerCity, on 05/09/2008, -0/+6Highjacking the top comment to point out that this was no accident.
"While mourning the loss of their children, the Cobles tried to add to their family. Lori Coble had three embryos implanted after in vitro fertilization, and in October she found out she was pregnant."

This was a calculated move on their behalf. Lets not pretend its some kind of miracle.- setec, on 05/10/2008, -1/+1Every birth is a miracle. :)

- mciampa1214, on 05/09/2008, -20/+4I've never actually seen a birth before, but doesn't 'one minute apart' sound a little fast?! Or do they just come flying out after the first one?
- RealmDown, on 05/09/2008, -2/+22When they are ready, there is NO stopping them. They're like watermelon seeds. Some doctors even have emergency catchers mitts.
- dellis62, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3I'm pretty sure with a multiple birth that a Cesarean section would have been the doctor's choice. Easily born one minute apart if that's the case.
- CedEx, on 05/09/2008, -0/+7So the oldest baby is the one the doctor decides to pull out first....
- frostbyt, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1Please stop. Giving birth sounds as bad as being pregnant. *yuk

- anazem, on 05/09/2008, -1/+5These babies were delivered by C-section, so one minute apart sounds reasonable.
And, of course, congrats to the Cobles! - joshhan, on 05/09/2008, -0/+8I dunno, did you even read the article?

- reuscel, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1I'll be honest with you, I debated over whether to use "plethora" and "myriad" for several minutes. I ended up picking the most cromulent word.
- Calcularius, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3I still felt incredible sorrow reading about this. Sitting here at my desk at work, looking at the pictures of the children that were lost made me cry. I'm sure the parents will feel that sense of loss forever, just perhaps not as intensely now.

- rayraym0fucka, on 05/09/2008, -7/+2hah! I was reading and hoping to find a nice thread about this. I thought they would have beaten you to it.
- dentalpirate, on 05/09/2008, -1/+17well...uh..err..nevermind then
- CycloneTH, on 05/09/2008, -3/+21If you have kids and lose them, then decide to have more, I'd call that a replacing something. They're not replacing the kids they've lost by any means. What they're replacing is the lost feeling of parenthood, and I see absolutely nothing wrong with that, but don't delude yourself into thinking that their loss hasn't affected their actions.
- Kas70, on 05/09/2008, -3/+2I understand what you're saying. Like poor John Walsh and his wife when their son Adam was kidnapped and killed. They almost didn't make it as a family but when they had more children it was new chapter to help them, not to forget, but to heal.
- aussiejan, on 05/09/2008, -4/+11Nobody (including the parents) would say they were "replacing" the children rather they are filling a hole in their lives. I can't relate to their tragedy but early this year my husband and I lost our two cats - one was 16 and the other died from cancer - a month apart. We have two new kittens who are not replacements for our beloved pets but have filled a hole in our lives and in our hearts. And before people jump all over me, I am in no way comparing the loss of a child to the loss of a pet although I experienced profound grief with their deaths.
- msflower97, on 05/15/2008, -0/+0Dugg for your refreshing understanding that although losing a beloved pet is losing a family member and very traumatic, it is nowhere near as painful and life-altering as losing a child. I have lost both, and almost lost my elderly cat a few months back, but the death of my daughter will haunt me forever. Thank you.

- swrostmore, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2According to the Tibetan Book of the Dead, when you die your "soul" wanders around a separate plane of existence for something like 1 year (maybe several months, I forget), before choosing to be reincarnated.

- coollettuce, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1I was joking. Must I put /sarcasm?
- mardybum, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3It is an unspoken rule of Digg etiquette that when talking about religion sarcastically, you MUST mention the Flying Spaghetti Monster or your sarcasm will be missed and immediately dugg down (it's a reflex).
- Modizzle, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1I don't see why this member is being dug down. Moreover, what's sad is that the member seems to lack the courage to stand behind his convictions. That was pretty vaginistic. Reincarnation simply deals with the rebirth of the soul.

- Kas70, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2That's what I feel is the major drawback of the internet. It prolongs adolescence.
- mardybum, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1Yea, apparently the use of the word "Lord" trumps "I don't consider myself very religious"

- trntman, on 05/09/2008, -2/+0Oh shut up. It's in no way unholy. Unless the babies came out red and screaming in tongue...
- msflower97, on 05/15/2008, -0/+0Buried for unholy and the fact that you have no idea what a bereaved parent feels. Perhaps they had already intended to have more children but couldn't conceive on their own, and not ALL treatments produce multiples -- it's just that the more embryos implanted, the better the chances of at least one developing properly. In any event it's their lives, they now have a little bit of joy back in their lives, and if it makes you feel any better they will NEVER get over losing their first three children and will always mourn for them...every little thing their triplets do will remind them of the other children.

- RudeTurnip, on 05/09/2008, -1/+8Serious question...I wonder if these kids will think of their deceased siblings as their brothers and sisters or "those other kids from before" given the circumstances and the fact that there were 3 others before them. My mom had a brother that died as a baby years before she was born and although he was technically her older brother, she refers to him as a "little brother"...but in any case as a brother.
- lizlemoncello, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1My dad was born after a miscarriage, and even though he never knew that older sibling, my grandmother keeps referring to him as my dad's "special little friend".
He has two older (live) siblings who actually remember it all going down, but somehow she has it in her head that my father and his dead brother would have been the best of friends. - msflower97, on 05/15/2008, -0/+0Many parents who lose babies and young children make it a point to keep the child's memory alive in the minds and hearts of their living children, whether they are older or younger than the one who died. I hope if I have more children they will grow up knowing and loving their "big sister" who died three years ago, because she will always be my daughter and their sibling.

- TheThirdLevel, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4You have obviously never been a parent. I hope you never become one, either. I would feel for your kids.
- notman, on 05/09/2008, -9/+8WOW, the new kids are the same sex/ratio as the lost children too. It's almost as if god/karma is correcting a mistake.

- msflower97, on 05/15/2008, -0/+0You can't "correct" the loss of a child with the birth of another. I don't care what religion or belief system you subscribe to. Yes, this is a positive story, but these are three brand new lives...they will never be the ones who died. Their parents will live with both joy and sorrow the rest of their lives with regards to the their triplets and the three little ones they lost.

- LogicBomB, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4Actually yes, that makes you the definition of crazy.
- msflower97, on 05/15/2008, -0/+0That's your choice to make, but you don't know what you'll do if it happens to you. Most of us choose to move forward and learn to live without our children, because life is worth living. We never get over it, but we get through it.

- shadowman99, on 05/09/2008, -1/+6She carried them 32 weeks. That's amazing for a multiples pregnancy. My wife had twins and the doctor induced at 28 weeks to the day.
Multiple pregnancies are considered high risk for mother and children, so doctors are usually anxious to deliver at the first possibility.
In the case of my wife, the doctor was legally not allowed to induce until the 28th week. In Iowa it would be considered an abortion to induce during the 27th week, unless there's an emergency.
Congrats to the family. I hope it helps them deal with their terrible loss.- dontera, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3I have a lot to say about this, but I would come off as pompous or whatever so I will just say this:
That doctor was being reckless; 28 weeks is the Absolute minimum gestation for a viable baby. The risks of Early Induction and C-Section greatly outweigh the risks of a simple twins pregnancy. Your wife and your children are lucky to have survived the procedure.- shadowman99, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2Actually I just realized I screwed up. My wife was induced at THIRTY-eight weeks. I typed a 2. Opps
My first daughter was 4 pounds, 9 ounces. My second was 5 pounds, 2 ounces. My wife and two daughters were discharged from the hospital after four days.
They just turned 5 this week. - msflower97, on 05/15/2008, -0/+0My daughter was born at 24 weeks and lived for a week. I know of many other 24-weekers who have survived, and when I was having complications I was told that 24 weeks was the cusp of viability. Since then I have learned of babies born even earlier who survived, albeit with possible lifelong problems. I realize you were replying to someone who made a typo but 28 weeks is well past the viability cutoff.

- flogistan, on 05/09/2008, -5/+4This just proves once and for all that there is a fertility drug for everyone. Big pharma is watching over us all. There's a rhyme and reason to everything they do.
- lizlemoncello, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1What are you talking about? *They* sought out fertility drugs. It's not like the pharmaceutical companies are spiking the water supply.

- zagenhoft, on 05/09/2008, -0/+17She had In Vitro Fetilization and choose to have 3 fetilized egg implanted.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21767764/?GT1=10547
The triplets Lori Coble is carrying — two girls and a boy — were conceived through in vitro fertilization. In the procedure, 10 of Lori Coble’s eggs had been fertilized and three became viable embryos.
Chris Coble, 36, said there was just a 10 percent chance that three of the 10 eggs would be viable. The doctors wanted to implant just two of the embryos, but the couple had lost two girls and a boy and asked for all three embryos to be transferred to Lori Coble’s womb.- EMHMach2, on 05/09/2008, -3/+0I wonder why they didn't just adopt children if they wanted to have more?
- msflower97, on 05/15/2008, -0/+0Why should they? As long as they are able to provide love and proper care for their children they are entitled to have as many of their own as they want.
- aethelberga, on 05/09/2008, -0/+13See, that's what I was looking for that wasn't in the dugg article. If this was a strange coincidence of a natural multiple birth, then that's just freaky. Deliberate IVF planning for a multiple sounds like they might have needed a little counseling (though I do understand that they implant three and they might not all go to term)
- SpeakerCity, on 05/09/2008, -3/+3You just took all the wind out of the sails of the Jesus Idiots.
- EMHMach2, on 05/09/2008, -3/+0I wonder why they didn't just adopt children if they wanted to have more?
- missyousomuch07, on 05/09/2008, -9/+2So they should have 6 kids including the three that died a year ago. That's not sad at all.
Are you kidding me, people? This isn't good news. This is tragic! Just because they had 3 kids at once does not make up for those that died a year ago. Human beings are not replaceable pets like goldfishes or hamsters. This is still tragic! What is wrong with you idiots?- soccerman90, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3The grandfather in this story is the reverand of the church i attend in Pennsylvania. I know him very well and this was a horribly tragic event when the children died. He was personally and religiously shaken to the core by the events. At the funeral was probably the hardest i have ever cried and i never met the kids. but there is nothing more amazing then the birth of the triplets who happen to be 1 boy and 2 girls. This is good news believe me. The children before them will always be remembered by the family. They have gone through a horrible event and this will help
- mycatsasha, on 05/10/2008, -1/+0I never thought hamsters were replaceable either.
- msflower97, on 05/15/2008, -0/+0The parents seem pretty happy about their triplets. You know they will never get over the loss of their older children, but that doesn't make THIS part of their lives a tragedy. So all parents who lose children should just go live on a deserted island somewhere? Your username suggests you lost someone close to you, perhaps a child...if so, you should know better, and if not, then don't pretend to know how a bereaved parent feels.
- BradMW, on 05/09/2008, -4/+6This is just like the Seinfeld episode where Jerry would always break even.

- petemcfraser, on 05/09/2008, -0/+6This is just like the comment way up at the beginning of the story where someone quoted the episode where Jerry would always break even.
...only that one was better.
- woody24, on 05/09/2008, -3/+1Its great news. But tt will be sad for them when they are born. I have a friend who lost 2 kids. 2 years later, they had twins. They are greatful, but still compair the new brother and sister to their lost brother and sister. They said, in a way, they wished it wasn't the exact same as before, because they will alway compare the sets.
- jojo77, on 05/09/2008, -1/+5I can't even imagine losing 1 of my kids let alone 3. Their new kids will never replace that loss but hopefully they can bring them some joy again.
