- inactive, on 03/19/2008, -2/+116A little implement called a ‘shield’ would come in handy in these situations.
- coppyrightmind, on 03/19/2008, -3/+74My courser instinctively moved to select group. Thats how I know I've spent too many hours playing Age of Empires.
- inactive, on 03/19/2008, -2/+67There is something seriously ***** up about people wearing Nike basketball jerseys fighting a war with bow and arrows. Damn near an SM Stirling story.
- retzed, on 03/19/2008, -1/+62A little implement called an 'AK-47' wouldn't go too far astray either.
- MoxieKills, on 03/19/2008, -2/+51Must....resist.......
TWANG....HEADSHOT?
I tried. - jpesicka2, on 03/19/2008, -4/+39wow..you gotta be a bad ***** to kill someone with a bow and arrow..
- Crossmenjeff, on 03/19/2008, -1/+33and then someone figured out Machine guns are only 40 bucks with more ammo than you can ever imagine on the black market, and the war was over pretty darn quick. but the bows were cute while they lasted. good show.
- Sbebo, on 03/19/2008, -1/+33It's kind of weird seeing warfare these days without guns. Great pictures. Sad context.
- GibsonSG91, on 03/19/2008, -1/+26Holy *****.
- timbofirstblood, on 03/19/2008, -0/+24They aren't using longbows.
- VCAT, on 03/19/2008, -1/+24Its a shame that they have to resort to use middle-age weaponry that clearly doesn't work (no ones dead in the photos). For just 1 dollar per day you can supply one man, woman, or child with an AK47 with enough ammo to last a year. I think its truly inspiring how even without basic firearms, these poor tribes still manage to carry on warfare with all the vigor and enthusiasm that quite franky, we, the priveleged have forgotten.
- greenlight2001, on 03/19/2008, -2/+24It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye...
- Crossmenjeff, on 03/19/2008, -0/+21well the whole thing was sponsored by gatorade and nike, i don't know what you were expecting.
- BenS, on 03/19/2008, -0/+21Fight in the shade?
- doctechnical, on 03/19/2008, -0/+18No, you wouldn't need men with balls of steel. You'd just need conscription, just like the old days. It's not like those peasant farmers were fighting because they loved their King, they were given a simple choice: fight or die.
Be careful what you wish for. - H1tchh1k3r, on 03/19/2008, -0/+18ah, to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune
- TecK415, on 03/19/2008, -2/+19Shield's are for pussies.
- dookie11, on 03/19/2008, -4/+21To everyone:
In several countries in Africa, guns are outlawed, so bows and arrow would seem to be a likely weapon to be used for dispute resolution (in the violent way). Also, this probably wasnt a staged display of throwback weapons being used. This is quite realistic actually. So stop thinking they're just playing cops and robbers like we used to as kids.
Peace. - carpespasm, on 03/19/2008, -2/+17not so much, you just need good aim. In many places bowyers had a lower status than other warriors because they were seen as less honorable for killing their enemies without having to be within arm's reach where they could see the face of those they killed.
- timbofirstblood, on 03/19/2008, -1/+16The cultures remain unchanged? Look at what they are wearing. I don't think they've been rocking slacks and t-shirts for thousands of years. In terms of quality of life, I don't think you can deny the importance of technology. Medicine is an example. There's a reason why the life expectancy in Kenya is only 55.3. Technology will get you an average of two extra decades. Sounds good to me.

200 feet away, arrow travel 200fps, you have how much time to react?
Again, I point out the lack of shields by the actual combatants. This ain't D&D. - anteyekon4myst, on 03/19/2008, -2/+17It's all fun and games until !Kitengi loses an eye
- DulcetTone, on 03/19/2008, -1/+15as are needless apostrophes
- palmerized, on 03/19/2008, -0/+14wow this is incredible -- give some credit to the photographer for being able to get such great photos.
- inactive, on 03/19/2008, -1/+15I'd pit your English long bows (300m) against my Mongolian composite bows (530m).
- inactive, on 03/19/2008, -1/+14Not to mention when you get all those peasants lined up to launch arrows, three gomers from the Bronx can mow them down with one SAW and two M16s. Wars aren't fought with rules. Winners decide the rules and apply them to the losers.
- Soave, on 03/19/2008, -0/+13Guns are outlawed, but killing otherwise is legal? Hmm...
- toppgun, on 03/19/2008, -0/+13but what happens when you have exploding arrows. a shield wouldnt stop Rambo.
- Llanowar, on 03/19/2008, -3/+16Who needs shields when you can cast a deflect arrows spell?
- D3koy, on 03/19/2008, -1/+14I somehow doubt that people waging war with bows and arrows are very concerned with gun laws...They may be harder to get (guns), so that's why they use arrows...
- Nowaiman, on 03/19/2008, -1/+13my bff jill
- Norris667, on 03/19/2008, -1/+12Theres something more terrifying about being Struck in the eye by a crude splintered bow, than a bullet.
- MaruLono, on 03/19/2008, -1/+12maybe it's against the rules?
- Zaeboes, on 03/19/2008, -0/+11You'd be amazed what people can do when given the right encouragement. Do you think people liked war that way back then?
- hawk0168, on 03/19/2008, -7/+17Server got ARROWED!!!!!!
- contradictator, on 03/19/2008, -0/+10Later that night, they all dined in New York.
- JoeCool51, on 03/19/2008, -0/+9Are periods needless too?
- BlackJackJester, on 03/19/2008, -1/+10I'm a personal fan of the battle-axe or the flanged mace.
- allfatherblack, on 03/19/2008, -0/+9Wow you really had to leave the e out of elbows and instead you added a dash? I hope you mean LOW blows, but I dont remember Norris nut--punching as habit. Something tells me you can text like a ***** and your MySpace page can literally be used as an autobiography once youve died. If I misunderstood, drop me a line and Ill post "Im a douchebag" where ever you want it.
- thcobbs, on 03/19/2008, -1/+10Except, it's hard to maneuver with both a shield and b/a combination. You just don't have 3 hands on a battlefield. Also, once you get locked into semi-stationary positions (i.e shielding yourself) you can easily be picked off from your flanks.
- JBmtk, on 03/19/2008, -0/+8LARPers around the world are jealous
- CYR1X, on 03/19/2008, -1/+9If you look at the end it links to a picture that shows a guy who got an arrow to the face (nsfw)
- elliotys, on 03/19/2008, -0/+8Rambo would be proud.
- BradHAWK, on 03/19/2008, -1/+8Yeah, 'specially the guy with the arrow in his face.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 03/19/2008, -1/+8The Apache Longbow is still way better.
- Terr01, on 03/19/2008, -1/+8So? Speed is only one factor for energy, and the quality of the tip also matters for penetration power.
I'd assume that for the same level of technology and time investment on each side, shields that are decently strong against arrows are not too hard. - doebob11, on 03/19/2008, -0/+7It's really hard to use a shield and a bow at the same time.
- Llanowar, on 03/19/2008, -0/+7Periods are very needless. Every month again.
- W00DR0W, on 03/19/2008, -2/+8Yeah I said that too, and then I saw the dead guy with the arrow in his face. It's not real amazing if get that these guys aren't kite flying.
At least they're fighting like men and not shooting women and children from a ***** jeep with an AK-47 like in Darfur. - Wartz, on 03/19/2008, -0/+6chainmail is weak vrs arrows. You need scales or plate armor.
