This Video Makes Bill Gates Look Cooler Than Steve Jobs
gizmodo.com — OMG, I can hear the fanboys battling already. Here's a video from last night's CES 2008 keynote, Bill Gates' last for the foreseeable future. And I know its scripted, edited and contrived, but I'm sold: The man is a cool geek.

Oh wait.- Braingoo, on 01/07/2008, -2/+24This is one guy that can quit his day job, in fact if I was him I would have quit long ago and let someone else handle it.
Do I want to get out of bed today. (looks at large pile of money on the floor) Nah let someone else handle it I'm good.- Neoanarchist, on 01/07/2008, -1/+14Pile? na more like: You know that 205 million dollars found from those drug smugglers that looked like a bed? Gates has twin king size bunkbeds made of cash.

- airquotes, on 01/07/2008, -43/+7I had to bury as innacurate based on the title... he's trying too hard, but its funny. cool though? no. I know this will be buried, but I cant suck this guys dick like all of you, I have a special hatred for people that get succesful by stealing other's ideas, and then crying and suing everybody else claiming that they are stealing his.. a guy who claims to be a "computer guy" but tries desperately to bury the open source movement.. capitalism at its worst, and holding back the progress of the software industry.. forced obsolescence and preloaded inferior operating systems... I dont like this guy. sorry.
- dkoon, on 01/07/2008, -4/+46You talked about stealing other's ideas, but look at the open source movement which is filled with office clones, photoshop clones, and all the other clones. In all these years, you guys tried to make Linux look more like Windows to get people to switch. Oh well, it's only stealing when Microsoft does it right?
- crimsonnblue, on 01/07/2008, -3/+8@dkoon...
Yes... finally someone put it in words that are just perfect. You made my day :) - webweave, on 01/07/2008, -14/+3Did M$ invent the word processor, the spread sheet, the presentation software, the data base, the web server, the web browser, DOS? NO none of these, M$ waits for ideas to get popular and then buys the third or forth place company (remember Spy Glass?) Even non M$ products like Photoshop were developed by two guys in their basement. I had PS b1 and it closely resembled packages we had on IRIX except it only did greyscale images. Just because you only saw in M$ products doesn't mean it started there.
- xister, on 01/07/2008, -0/+6Wow- that didn't take long...
- dkoon, on 01/07/2008, -0/+8I never said Microsoft invented anything, or everything they did are original. I hope you are not trying to tell us that all those clones, and how the Open Source community "Openly" copying Microsoft or other Closed Source softwares are just my ignorance or misunderstanding. Also, Google is also buying out companies for their ideas, like I said, is it only stealing when Microsoft does it? Throwing out old ***** doesn't make you right pal.
- a0me, on 01/07/2008, -0/+28I guess that when you reach that level of wealth (or even a tenth of that) you stop thinking of work as a way to make money.

I'm pretty sure all gates has done these past ten years is goof off take the easy business life.
I mean he has tons of coders already in his company (that need better direction)- asforme, on 01/08/2008, -1/+4Goofing off... I'll bet Vista is just his secret practical joke on the world.
- billbillbilly, on 01/07/2008, -2/+3um it was his dream job, he was his own boss and got to do exactly what he wanted, why the hell would he quit?
- Neoanarchist, on 01/07/2008, -1/+14Pile? na more like: You know that 205 million dollars found from those drug smugglers that looked like a bed? Gates has twin king size bunkbeds made of cash.
- tdelet, on 01/07/2008, -6/+116However anyone feels about Microsoft, Gates is doing more for the world with the personal wealth he has accumulated than anyone else--especially if you compare with egomaniacs like Jobs and Ellison.
- Rhendal, on 01/07/2008, -23/+7Well you make it sound like Jobs and Ellison don't give money to charity. Gates may give more, and that's awesome, but you shouldn't discredit the other two you mentioned.
- tdelet, on 01/07/2008, -4/+23Sorry, but do feel that those guys (and those like them) should be doing a better job of giving back. Gates isn't just giving money, he is actually working to improve the world.
- Rhendal, on 01/07/2008, -7/+2Hey, I was just pointing out that they do still give a lot to the cause, and it seemed like the OP was making it sound like they weren't giving enough. I wasn't trying to discredit Gates' charity work, hence why I called it awesome because it is.
- Meatpuppet79, on 01/07/2008, -1/+32Bill Gates' foundation is working to wipe out a whole disease (polio). Thats pretty significant and a worthy legacy, alleviating suffering.
- krd1979, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1As far as I know Jobs doesn't give anything to charity... unless he does it anonymously. I'd be willing to be proven wrong here but I couldn't find a single donation he's made.

ok you win, I am a ***** IDIOT... - kopaka649, on 01/07/2008, -0/+10"On 11 April, 2007, Forbes reported that telecommunications magnate Carlos Slim Helú had risen to become the world's second richest man.[2] Later, the Wall Street Journal on 4 August, 2007 and Fortune Magazine on 6 August, 2007 reported that Carlos Slim Helú had topped Bill Gates' position as the wealthiest person in the world.[3][4][5] Subsequently, on CNBC, Warren Buffett is referred to as the world's third richest man on the December 24 special on him. However, proper accounting methodology requires that all people on the list be ranked on the same date. This list reflects the ranking of the world's billionaires on 9 February, 2007, prior to Carlos Slim Helú becoming the world's richest man."

- Mylonite, on 01/07/2008, -1/+17I'm active in several nonprofit groups, and his foundation is doing more than ANYONE ever imagined. I bear a grudge against Microsoft for being too damn good at shifty marketing and sales, not maintaining useful commandline access, and Vista - but Gates has my attention and gratitude. I don't know how Rockefeller made that fortune, but Gates is in line for that kind of philanthropy immortality.

- Fyro, on 01/07/2008, -3/+95Bono and bill are charity buddies... they both are very very strong believers in helping the world become a better place. Visionary buddies if you will, and all the power to them for their charity work.
- bootle, on 01/07/2008, -7/+10Maybe their dedication will let them realize that fixing africa is a political problem, and not a socioeconomic one. In other words, stop blindly giving money!
- rnwen2750, on 01/08/2008, -1/+3Yeah, I'd say giving money to stop AIDS and polio is just "blindly giving money."
- dtxcon, on 01/08/2008, -1/+2And I'd say you could be right. I haven't taken the time to research and evaluate Bill Gate's contributions (and won't), but your comment seems a little simplistic. It doesn't matter how noble your intentions if some of your money will be intercepted by corrupt African governments and used for other purposes. Even if you don't agree, the argument is understandable that before sending money to Africa in the hope that it will distributed properly, it might ultimately be more effective and therefore humane to first contribute resources toward efforts to improve the political situation.
- rnwen2750, on 01/08/2008, -1/+3Yeah, I'd say giving money to stop AIDS and polio is just "blindly giving money."
- landrypants, on 01/08/2008, -1/+0Yeah they are both key members of the One campaign against poverty. Bono also works with the Bill and Malinda Gates foundation a lot.
- bagelmaster, on 01/08/2008, -3/+1Bono is still a piece of *****. My thoughts: "Bono, yes it's great you have tons of money falling out your ass. Awesome. It'd be like hating walt because you hate disney...- lukasmach, on 01/07/2008, -24/+5I don't know about that - Gates labeled open source communism and (more importantly) personally explicitly asked his employees to search for patents which could damage his competitors and hold them back. This means that he intentionally tried to hold the whole industry back.
When Douglas Merrill (from Google) had lecture in Prague, he said that "Yahoo is great" - now that's the spirit.- dkoon, on 01/07/2008, -9/+3Hmmm... but all you open source guys do is make everything from Microsoft look bad no matter what it is, and what kind of spirit is that? Hypocrite maybe?
- lukasmach, on 01/07/2008, -3/+8On the contrary, I'm quite fond of the new Office UI (Vista on the other hand is a sick joke, IMHO). Also, ad hominem. I'm merely responding to the statements that Gates is geek/almost-hacker. No, he isn't - otherwise he wouldn't intentionally make "his" industry less fun just because it meant more money for him.
- Syphon8, on 01/08/2008, -0/+10Open Source IS communism...
- nubnub, on 01/08/2008, -2/+6Is Communism really such a bad thing? "A theory or system of social organization based on the holding of all property in common, actual ownership being ascribed to the community as a whole or to the state." Doesn't sound that bad to me.
- Nitesmoke, on 01/08/2008, -0/+2It just sucks in practice. Do you really want the government to decide that your money that you work for is better to be split up evenly to people who don't work as hard as you.
- dkoon, on 01/07/2008, -9/+3Hmmm... but all you open source guys do is make everything from Microsoft look bad no matter what it is, and what kind of spirit is that? Hypocrite maybe?
- myotive, on 01/07/2008, -2/+12Wasn't Walt Disney racist?
- Nitesmoke, on 01/07/2008, -1/+6Why because they used politically incorrect drawings once in awhile? Times have changed, people are more sensitive now. Racist means that you believe your race is superior to others, not that you had a black guy singing "Zippity Doo Da" in "Song of the South." If in the 1800's it was common for men to marry 14 yeor old women, does thatt mean they were all peodophiles?
- myotive, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1http://www.momentsintime.com/Disney%20Book%20Page. ...
Note Walt's use of the 'N-word' in the book, only used at the time as an insult. Also note that Walt was openly anti-semetic towards the Jews and created cartoons against the civil rights movement. To me, that's border-line racist, even for those times.
- myotive, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1http://www.momentsintime.com/Disney%20Book%20Page. ...

- Aggaman, on 01/07/2008, -41/+4Comments like this reveal you as deeply uncool. Just look at the spastic intro music to Gates' keynote. Sure he's a decent guy and can laugh at himself, but even he'd laugh if you called him cool.
And the video was right. WTF is up with that cat's hair?- Dylson, on 01/07/2008, -0/+9Comments like this reveal you as deeply uncool.
- sleepwalkers, on 01/07/2008, -0/+5He didn't call him cool, he called him coolER.
Which is true.
- signal15, on 01/07/2008, -49/+5Maybe you should reconsider that statement, for I have a true story that you might be interested in hearing.
A friend of mine works for MS. He very frequently is in meetings with Bill G and other execs, where they review new developer ideas. This one developer walks in, gives a powerpoint preso of his idea, and brings up a working demo. BG is quiet the whole time up to this point. Then he asks "How much do we pay you?". The guy laughs it off... BG swears at him and yells "How much do we ***** pay you?" The guy tells him. BG says, "Not anymore, pack up your ***** and leave."
I guess if you have an idea and it's not liked, you don't work there anymore.- Neoanarchist, on 01/07/2008, -1/+35First of all we have no reason at all to believe you so what is the point of posting this. Secondly in a business as cut-throat as this one where he's the industry leader and the worlds richest man it seems like his methods are working just fine tact and benevolence aside.
- bobbydiamondz, on 01/07/2008, -2/+34Here's the lore that gets told at Apple: SJ to employee while in elevator,"So, what do you do for me?" Employee, stunned that SJ is talking to him, responds, "Uhhhh, I don't know... I.. Uhhhh...". SJ responds, "You don't know what you do? You're fired!". I'm sure people that work at Oracle have the same story about Larry Ellison, and people who work at Google have a similar one about LP, and people at [insert big corp name here] have a story about [insert big CEO/founder here].
- Phylodome, on 01/07/2008, -7/+0This is such an ignorant comment it's ridiculous. The cultures at each of these institutions is completely different. Knowing people who work at both microsoft and google, i can speak first hand to the fact that the googlers do not fear presenting any of their ideas, regardless of how seemingly useless they may be. On the other hand,at Microsoft, the normal corporate hierarchy is in full swing, along with all the cubicles and fear of new ideas associated with it. Microsoft "innovation" is making a $10,000 bulky-ass table that no-one will by to demonstrate concepts that other companies are doing in a far more innovative, less expensive, and better looking way. If you ask me, whoever was the lead on THAT project should be fired!
- bobbydiamondz, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1Look jackass, I worked at Apple. That's the story that people told about King Jobs. I carried it out to Google and Oracle to make a point. Your inability to figure that out makes you ignorant and ridiculous.

- sindex, on 01/07/2008, -1/+38I have a friend who met Bill Gates while shopping at Wal-Mart. He said, "Hey, you're Bill Gates and you're shopping at Wal-Mart!" and Gates replied, "Yes I am and yes I am." Then he opened his wallet and tossed hundred dollar bills down all the aisles, while skipping and whistling "Zippidy Doo Dah."

Actually to me he is in my top 3 coolest.
His contributions to the world are great and that is important to me. But mainly the fact that he pushes computers the right way and all the time. He isn't rude to apple no matter how bad apple treats MS and he's positive.
His desire to push computers as far as he can pleases me. I would do the exact same in his position and I often think, I wish this would happen with MS etc and EVERY time MS ends up doing it within a year or sometimes 2 or 3 but it always happens. I feel like I share his vision of things to some extent and that those who don't see it the same way are fine as they are but that they are missing some great ideas. Gates is innovative and very fair to the computer world. Why some would love apple over him boggles my mind. He has a large and working company and this video just makes it better.
Go Bill Gates! - wondertwins, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1There must be some computing error here.

- tgc1, on 01/07/2008, -8/+10Do you know what you've just done!? Do you hear that? It's a stampede of rabid Fan Boys coming to vouch for their personal hero. Gates or Jobs... It's like you've opened a rift on Digg. I think I might just divide by zero if I go ahead and say they are both kinda cool.
- HayString, on 01/07/2008, -4/+37How many billions has Jobs given to charity?
- andyakadum, on 01/07/2008, -3/+28Not enough.
- Frogee, on 01/07/2008, -1/+25Not nearly as much as Gates actually...
- Dylson, on 01/07/2008, -0/+34Not that much. Probably hardly any. Jobs can suck a dick.
- eltrev, on 01/07/2008, -1/+13HaHaHa ... No.
But I'll give you 2 points where I *WANT* him to be "cooler" than Jobs.
1. Bill actually helps the world by donating Billions. Cooler? No, it just means he is more successful, and he is THE MAN (with heart)
2. I am sick of hearing about Jesus Jobs. Even as a respectful user of Apple products, I am tired of the nonstop PR success story. - posure, on 01/08/2008, -0/+6Having Jay Z cameo in his last day video makes him instantly cooler alone.

- norman619, on 01/07/2008, -5/+31Another reason to think Jobs is a fool.
- amida, on 01/07/2008, -1/+12What does that mean? He believes in karma so he doesn't want any good karma? His definition of karma must be pretty self-serving if what you say is true.
- neio, on 01/07/2008, -1/+7Karma and by definition the belief in re-incarnation proposes that each and every person who is in the social/economic situation where they are, are supposed to be there and any assistance that you may give to them affects their chances of going to the next level of reincarnation.
Therefore the some tenets of Hinduism take the standpoint of not helping anybody (Read Sikhism)- rnwen2750, on 01/08/2008, -0/+4That's a rather one-sided look. One could also argue that by more Buddhist guidelines, one should help another with less fortune than you in order to raise your own karma.

- dcmjzero, on 01/07/2008, -2/+19he is giving away almost all of his money (and not to his kids- to charity). the point of a tax dodge is to end up with more money. if that is a tax dodge, then he should fire his accountant.
- L4WL3RS34L, on 01/07/2008, -3/+1Though he has donated a LOT of money, it is true that one reason for his foundation was a tax dodge. But the tax dodge is good because that would be more money that might be donated, knowing that our government doesn't give a ***** about them and would use the money for a war.

Steve Jobs is a turd with a turtleneck...Bill Gates is a terrible bastard who is dedicating his life to helping poor people with him money. What a dick!- Qumahlin, on 01/07/2008, -3/+1Now now, dedicating his life to helping poor with his money is a bit extreme. He dedicated his life to making said money and now he is returning some of it to the community...honestly he has no real option but to be as charitable as he is, it also gives him some hefty tax breaks.
Also be aware Steve Jobs has privacy/publicity issues. When it comes to MacWorld and his scheduled speeches he is a star, but outside of that he is a recluse. Many have said its likely Jobs donates anonymously so there really is no way to know if he is being philanthropic or not. Not that what the owner of a company does has ever stopped me from buying its products..the CEO could eat babies for all I care as long as they make something I want :P- kjd84, on 01/08/2008, -0/+2Yeah great one mate! - defectDS, on 01/07/2008, -2/+3Well we see much of steve outside of keynotes, so there is nothing much to go off of other than that he doesn't contribute much to charity... and Pirates of Silicon Valley. But then again, Apple is no Microsoft (yet); they don't have much to spare right now.

- flappysocks, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1I first thought the audio was out of phase, but I think it may have been mixed using a pseudo 3D sound stage (Dolby 3D or something?). The video soundtrack is in the center, the audience on the outside.

- EXreaction, on 01/07/2008, -2/+11Could you imagine what the world would be like without Microsoft?
Probably a hell of a lot worse, with much ***** software (people wouldn't have to compete as much), with many more different OS's that are all incompatible. I am glad MS has a huge monopoly, at least then I can get something and have nearly everything work on it. - webweave, on 01/07/2008, -7/+1Do you hear the fear in your voice? You sound like a character out of Orwell's 1984. Have you ever tried to stand up like a Man and make a choice for yourself? "Probably" means you don't know what you are talking about and "nearly" means you are not happy now. Everything good about computers existed before or without M$. Bill made a few good chess moves and he moved a few pieces while you weren't looking. That only makes him lucky and a cheat. Since my computing experience started before Windows I can imagine a world without Microsoft.
- carbonetc, on 01/07/2008, -4/+3Wow, there are no web developers on Digg today, apparently.
Millions of man hours have been wasted on dealing with the product of a company that's been uninterested in or even hostile toward standards for years (now they're finally getting the point and they still can't get IE7 right). And their crimes go way beyond the web browser.
Like webweave said, standardized computing existed just fine before Microsoft, and has thankfully flourished in spite of Microsoft's bullying.
I consider his charity the payment of a debt. Maybe someday he'll break even.

- rglover, on 01/07/2008, -1/+20Bill Gates: "Am I ready to take my shirt off?"
Matthew McConaughey: "Ummm, not yet." - FredFredrickson, on 01/07/2008, -5/+25I was unaware that Steve Jobs was cool in the first place.
- cthellis, on 01/07/2008, -3/+6Close proximity to Matthew McConaughey can make anyone look cool!
- HypocriteDigg, on 01/07/2008, -7/+17***** Gizmodo, always making ***** into a fanboy war. This has nothing to do with which platform is superior, it's just a good, funny video.
Dugg down for it being hosted by Gizmodo who will post anything for a hit you ***** sellouts.- gn0stik, on 01/07/2008, -2/+2*****, it was a featured film at CES. Gizmodo covers tech. CES is tech. People like funny. Geeks like tech funny. Hence, gizomodo should have posted this.
- pevensen, on 01/07/2008, -1/+35This isn't even the full video! It cuts off in the middle. Stupid Gizmodo! Here's the full one: http://www.tweakvista.com/Article39218.aspx

- linkerjpatrick, on 01/07/2008, -0/+2Reminds me of the post politics Bob Dole. Also Bill Clinton had a similar video right before he left office that was really funny.
- Koyder, on 01/07/2008, -4/+3That perfectly sums up the difference between Gates and Jobs: Gates has to act to appear cool, Jobs just has to be himself.
- Frostman3D, on 01/07/2008, -2/+3Bill Gates IS cooler than Steve Jobs.
