What I saw was the tragedy of how a good person can be motivated to commit a crime by desperate economic circumstances. It's not as cut and dry as criminal = heartless. There's a lot more that goes into it, and I'd consider the petty thief to have more heart than you.

I was actually pleasantly surprised by the cop's response. I was expecting him to say "yes" like everyone always does when asked to give credit to God, but he realized that a robber who hugs the person and starts crying before they even start talking about God probably wasn't going to kill her anyway.
