- MAdaXe42, on 10/12/2007, -1/+90Of course. It's all about specific heat capacity & relative energy. You could put the biggest fire out by pissing on it, but you'd need a lot of piss.
- gahzinia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+65Pretty cool, but if they had used less thermite or more liquid nitrogen, the results would have been different.
- fatcat, on 10/12/2007, -5/+49is he the host of every good british show, or just the ones that get dugg?
- MAdaXe42, on 10/12/2007, -9/+44He's much better on Top Gear.
- theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -3/+32"Thermite, you won't like it when it's angry."
- Jonty, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20No, just Top Gear and Brainiac. Oh, and Crufts. Hee hee.
- DiamondIce, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19Braniac should hire Bill Nye to host/narrate, that would be sweet.
- nTensify, on 10/12/2007, -10/+25I love that guy, what are you talking about..
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -8/+23I am for Thermite, just because Kevin used it blow up a hard drive.
- bodger, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18Do not disrepect the Hamster!
- bacchus213, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Here's the same video with a bit more playing around with the thermite. This time used to destroy a Peugot!
http://youtube.com/watch?v=rdCsbZf1_Ng&mode=related&search=Thermite - blanski, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18gg? are you saying good game?
- kikibun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13The greatest thing about thermite is how easy it is to make: powdered iron rust and aluminium powder.
- sublimethinker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I think what happened was a pretty obvious outcome. Liquid Nitrogen has almost no heat capacity, so it just boils away and the thermite stays hot. Duh.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11From what I can tell, this whole show is nothing more than a venue for blowing ***** up.
I'm going to my cable company and demand that they carry this!
But for now, it's off to the torrents! - elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7They would need a much longer fuse.
- ricree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Especially when you have more thermite than nitrogen.
- joel2600, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13you can't lump everyone that thinks the towers fell due to thermite and other explosives into the "loose change" crowd
you can watch this video
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1951610169657809939
the first large portion of the video is all straight news footage, no commentary... no conspiracy theories because there are no theories being presented. use your minds critically. - G-RaZoR, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6This was kind of lame. Does an ice cube freeze something that is at room temperature or does something at room temperature melt an ice cube? The termite leaked on the nitrogen. It would have been a lot more interesting if they put a whole in the nitrogen and filled it with thermite.
- Wavey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@PowerCow -- I would assume that you're getting dugg down mainly because your posts are painful to read.
"dont buy it doesn't follow occam's"?
"they een hae"?
"steal structures colapse"
"propiganda"
I mean, just a suggestion, but it would help if you proofread a bit first, or ran it through spell-check. - futurekill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5so use the Kelvin scale where 0 is absolute (no kenetic motion)...liquid nitrogen at 75 kelvin and thermite at about 3273 kelvin...I don't see how that changes things though...it was a silly experiment in the first place although it did have some cool results...
- Soniti, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10GG = Giggity giggity.
See: Family Guy.
Are you guys really that behind? - netburnr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Richard Hammond is cool. Hes pretty funny on Top Gear, even if he does whiten his teeth, hehe
- kakwakas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah. I'd definitely like to see experiments done to get the exact amount of thermite and liquid nitrogen so they'd cancel out.

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9@cougar618:
I'm sceptical about the whole conspiracy thing myself, but a bunch of lame cartoons and a bill folding joke to call someone an ***** doesn't prove your point.. - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I wasn't sure what he was trying to say either.. but the closest thing I could find at acronymfinder for "gg" is "good going"
- ccheath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4joel... don't you mean thermate? The sulfer added variation cuts stell better.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermite#Military_uses
Prof. Jones has samples from wtc steel. At least two sources (not all the steel was sold to china) Others are peer-reviewing his study of the wtc steel. Thermate was used on 9-11.
http://www.physics.byu.edu/research/energy/htm7.html - hollywoodone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4For something to cancel out wouldn't it have to be completely opposite.
Like 1 and -1 is 0.
So you need 3000 and -3000. - nonsequitor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Why a Peugot? Because it's French!! Classic
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3/me creates digg "delete comment" button
- dartmanx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Dugg, just for the last line in the video.
- CingleMolt, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Isn't that all relative to where we say zero is?
- SuperSloth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@ cyroxos:
Nitrogen will combust in a properly oxygenated environment and the proper temperature and pressure.
N2 O2 = 2NO
2N2 4O2 = 4NO2
N2 3O2 = 2NO3
The atmosphere doesn't combust because there is insufficient oxygen to maintain nitrogen combustion. - cougar618, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@pants428
I agree, a couple of cartoons and a bill folding joke doesn't disprove the conspiracy theory's, but the 2 links at the bottom, one to a somewhat reputable magazine by the name of Popular Mechanics does. - Jozer99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't see how this test is fair:
Lets say the temperature is 30C. That makes Liquid N2 216 degrees colder than ambient, and thermite 2970 degrees hotter. I know there are more variables in this, such as theremal conduction such, but it still doesn't seem fair. Plus, the "winner" of the competition depends on how much of each material you have, its all a matter of energy:
If the energy released by the thermite is more than that necessary to vaporize all the N2, then thermite wins.
If the energy released by the thermite is not enough to vaporize all the N2, then the N2 wins.
If the energy values are equal, there is a tie.
Vary the amounts of materials, and you change the result. In terms of the absolute values of energy density, thermite wins hands down next to almost anything (besides some radioactive materials). - cjmemay, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9Just because you agree with the view does not mean it should not be buried. It was not a very helpful, intelligent or informative comment.
- cougar618, on 10/12/2007, -10/+12um, no.

The energy of the buildings collapsing, according to my physics prof, was near nuclear levels - cyroxos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ SuperSloth
Yes, That may be true, however, in the right environment Xenon will react. - jpyun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Think about what you said for a second.
- SPNKrPunk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Poor Hampster. I'm sure he dislikes his world of amusingly shaped vegetables, and would much rather be driving his Morgan on Top Gear, listening to Clarkson droning on about how America sucks..
No more digg comments when drunk...>hic - urbanRock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Do you all remember back in "the broken" (http://thebroken.org/) days when Ramzi, Kevin, and DoubleD fried a laptop with thermite. That was an awesome video.
- mcprogrammer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, it's more complicated. It also depends on the specific heats and the mass of the objects. Incidentally, -3000 degrees is impossible--the coldest temperature possible is −459.67 F or –273.15 C.
- ross., on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why is the first temperature in Fahrenheit and the second in Celsius in the title???
No diggity. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2need to fix my v key as well..
- virtualkuz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I forgot, in Series (Season) 8 they also have "Top Gear Dog" as one of the on air personalities.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm sure that there is an equilibrium point SOMEWHERE, where if you drop X amount of thermite into Y amount of liquid nitrogen would result in a null effect... I just don't know how to do that math to find out..
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ahh, senseless destruction and fiery effects.
Now that's entertainment! - dotuplink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1does anyone have anything better to do these days?
