xpingux, on 03/30/2008, -1/+2Actually, it's called a dermoid sinus. fairly rare with humans, it occurs more often in dogs and elephants.

It's basically a sinus that goes right to the base of your spine. The blood is spinal fluid flushing from the base. it can get pretty sore if it's agitated (pants rubbing against it, and that sort of thing) and the bleeding happens not all that often, and it's not a lot of blood at all.

However, unlike pilonidal sinus in humans, dermoid sinus in dogs is a neural tube defect. Dermoid sinus is sometimes also confused with dermoid cyst (a teratoma).
