- nullcodes, on 05/06/2008, -1/+127Why was the stupid judge so lenient ? Only 3 years for kidnapping a child and beating the ***** out of her , denying her school, medical care, and forcing her to work?
The DC Madam got 15 years and she didnt force anyone to do anything. - nullcodes, on 05/06/2008, -3/+90Only three years for the ***** *****, and 22 months for the bitch?
What the *****!! - inactive, on 05/06/2008, -8/+80I can understand drugs, weapons, all of it. But human trafficking is scary. Please, everyone join me in a group "WTF!"
- centerblack, on 05/06/2008, -1/+68Claiming to be ignorant of the law while you arrange to bring someone into the country illegally doesn't jive. I think those two ***** should have to spend longer in jail, but I'm glad they're getting deported and had to pay $75k to the girl.
- moosecack, on 05/06/2008, -16/+82WTF.... the article says she was 1 of 11 children born to poor parents. Why would poor people bring 11 children into this world that they can not afford to take care of. And no I do not condone that she was sold into slavery.
- NightcrawlerX, on 05/06/2008, -3/+64FTA: According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, human trafficking is now the fastest-growing criminal industry in the world. (!!!)
- CWal37, on 05/06/2008, -1/+43They do it for a bunch of different reasons. In some third world areas it's a religious or traditional obligation (need a son, etc.). Children are also viewed as a source of eventual income. Also, because the infant death rate is so high they tend to have more children and generally over compensate. conversely some "old" powerful first world western nations have declining populations, while pretty much all of them are slowing. This is, of course, outside of certain minorities that may have been traditionally repressed. Such as Eastern Europe's gypsy population which has exploded in the past several decades, despite losing a larger percent of their overall world wide population than any other persecuted group during the Holocaust.
tl;dr It's a ***** up world - ORBAT, on 05/06/2008, -0/+40Yeah, but she was involved in SEX. SEX, you hear me? It's evil, bad, naughty, dirty and immoral. Those two Egyptians were only enslaving a young girl.
- Brownye, on 05/06/2008, -1/+33ICE agent Bob Schoch adds, "I've seen pets that are treated better."
I've seen pets that are treated better than a lot of people. - controltheweb, on 05/06/2008, -1/+27Only weapons and narcotics drive more illegal money.
- dvsbastard, on 05/06/2008, -1/+26It's just you - Everyone else uses an ad blocker...
- inactive, on 05/06/2008, -3/+27I knew a boy that was kidnapped and lived for 10 years in Tel Aviv, Israel as a sex slave. Remember that those with money can do this with impunity.
- markdall, on 05/06/2008, -0/+21We need Batman IRL. :(
- ladyarcher85, on 05/06/2008, -2/+23Poor people have more children because most can't even afford to meet their basic needs, much more spend money on contraceptions like condoms and pills.
Second, most poor people live in countries where churches still exercise a lot of power and control and I have not seen or know of a church that promotes family planning and the use of contraceptives.
Governments in these poor countries don't spend much on health care and promoting family planning. etc - thisissami, on 05/06/2008, -3/+24several reasons. A) they can't afford condoms or contraceptives. B) they probably don't even know that they exist (rural egypt is really far behind. i'd be surprised if any of those 11 kids got more than 4 or 5 years of education... the parents probably got 0). C) even if they knew of their existence, they probably wouldn't be willing to wear condoms and wouldn't even think that it would work. it's sort of like why AIDS spread so fast in africa...

- ANT1138, on 05/06/2008, -8/+27Sex is a free source of entertainment. These people obviously don't think very far ahead.
- OfNumbers, on 05/06/2008, -6/+25Reader's Digest on Digg. It all makes sense now.
- hansk, on 05/06/2008, -0/+19Sign up now or you will be left behind!!!!! Make CEO income with spare-time in the fast exciting trade of human trafficking!!!!
- VinceNoir, on 05/06/2008, -3/+21They CAN'T think very far ahead. People from the poverty class have a different way of thinking shaped by the way they learn language. They learn casual register (this cuts across cultural barriers and nationalities. It even cuts across language barriers.) and the it's accompanying story telling model.
In casual register (as opposed to formal register used by middle class westerners) the vocabulary is small and speech requires many verbal assists (waving hands or touching the listener). The story telling model for casual register is not a straight flow from point A to point B. It's a disjointed, non-linear and disorganized presentation starting at the climax and then not really telling the story, but judging the character of the people involved. There's also typically a lot of interjection from the people surrounding the speaker.
Learning to think with a language model like this (not my work but the work of linguist Martin Joos in 1967) leads to an inability to think in a linear fashion. If language is learned in a poverty class background, the following will apply in most cases (from the work of psychologist Reuven Feurstein):
These differences in (language) register, discourse and story order are largely responsible for establishing some rather important skills in a developing child's mind. Regarding casual register as the primary acquired model of language, the following can be said based on the work of psychologist Reuven Feurstein: "If an individual depends upon a random, episodic story structure for memory patterns, lives in an unpredictable environment (as is typical of generational poverty)... then... and individual cannot plan:
If an individual cannot plan, he/she cannot predict.
If an individual cannot predict, he/she cannot identify cause and effect.
if an individual cannot identify cause and effect, he/she cannot identify consequence.
If an individual cannot identify consequence, he/she cannot control impulsivity.
If an individual cannot control impulsivity, he/she has an inclination toward criminal behavior".
So your statement that these people don't think very far ahead is quite true. Of course there are exceptions to the rule, but they are only exceptions and can't be expected to represent even a small sampling of the norms. And in this case, we're not even talking western norms. - MasterTroll, on 05/06/2008, -3/+21How many slaves do YOU have in your garage?
Discuss... - Kas70, on 05/06/2008, -0/+18What a strong girl! An example of the resiliency of the human spirit - and a reminder to be thankful for all that we take for granted.
- nonymous666, on 05/06/2008, -1/+17Well, they were ordered to pay. But in most situations, actually collecting on that court ordered payout is a different matter.
- CRCulver, on 05/06/2008, -0/+14What you are claiming is a strict version of the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, which has long since evaluated and rejected by the vast majority of the linguistics community. Just because one psychologist came up with a theory doesn't mean you can authoritatively pitch it in a discussion forum meant for laymen like this one. To do so is dishonest.
- EasyE888, on 05/06/2008, -0/+14I grew up in Irvine. Its a scary thought that this is happening in my hometown.
- unorginalityftw, on 05/06/2008, -0/+14What the hell?
- Pimpalicious316, on 05/06/2008, -1/+14but then were do you store you pool cleaning equipment? personally, my slaves are all in the attic.
- Akairenn, on 05/06/2008, -3/+16wtf, as in, wtf are you fools surprised? Rome wasn't built in a day; it was built over a period of several months on the backs of barbarians.
The only difference today is instead of mere Celts and Gauls, we've a wider range of stock to choose from. Do you expect any less from 'modern' society? We can't stop pointless wars over resources - did you really think we'd stop slavery? - bobartig, on 05/06/2008, -0/+13RTFA, she bought a prom dress, camera, computer, and a new car, and put the rest into a college fund. Done, and done.

- xtraa, on 05/06/2008, -2/+13They have no annuity assurance you know.
When they get old, their childs will take care of them. - Divals, on 05/06/2008, -0/+10Read the article, doods. She's already spent some of it.
- gryphon50, on 05/06/2008, -0/+10the couple obviously knew they were doing something wrong because it sounds like they were pretty reluctant to admit there was another person in the house...the sentences are a joke.
- kanojo1969, on 05/06/2008, -1/+11I worked in Sri Lanka for a few months in 1997, and a family I had frequent contact with 'owned' a young boy who was more or less a slave. He slept outside in filthy squalor and didn't go to school. His parents had sold him in the hope that his life would be better than if they had kept him, and I believe it was. I think his family was from the truly hideously poor class in Sri Lanka.
However, as I got to know them it was clear they didn't treat him as bad as this girl had been treated. He was more or less like a son to them but the nature of his situation was so ingrained as 'ok' to everyone involved that they just didn't see anything wrong with it. I was conflicted for quite a long time as to whether or not this was OK, and in the end I decided that it was.
No, he didn't live as well as the couple's real children, but yes do did have a much better life than he would have otherwise. His new 'father' was a successful businessman and this kid was guaranteed a job in the family business once he was old enough. What made my mind up was the fact that he was clearly a very happy young boy. Always grinning, always keen to help out.
It's weird, and I'm not in any way condoning what these Egyptians did, but I have seen situations where both parties were happy with the arrangement and it's not always as evil as it sounds. - karlhouser, on 05/06/2008, -0/+9I used to do that same thing, but its only a matter of time until you hurriedly store some boxes in the attic, stuff gets moved around and you misplace the damned thing.
Maybe I'll get my new slave to organize up there today... - Dundasbro, on 05/06/2008, -0/+9wtf
- YellowStar, on 05/06/2008, -2/+11Mean people suck. :-(
- inactive, on 05/06/2008, -1/+9FTA: "The couple were also ordered to pay Shyima $76,137 for the work she did. Both will be deported to Egypt when they get out of jail.
After the hearing, Shyima celebrated by going shopping for a dress to wear to her high school homecoming dance. She and Jenny chose a beautiful one-long, shiny, and black. With a portion of her restitution money, Shyima also got a laptop, a digital camera, and a new Nissan Versa; she put the rest into a college fund."
***** A!!! Awesome, good for her! When she heard she was getting that, she was probably like "That is so totally full of awesomeness and win."
Yeah, I think she said that exactly. - degron, on 05/06/2008, -0/+8It is believed that the Egyptians invented condoms...
- Black6x, on 05/06/2008, -2/+10I'm so sorry for laughing at this. Bury me to hell.
- VinceNoir, on 05/06/2008, -1/+9It is one thing to know that abstinence works. It's something else entirely to be able to abstain. Not everyone is equipped to do that. But I don't think that's the problem here. I think it was more likely driven by the religion or local culture. They are not Brad and Jenny Smith from an Oklahoma gated community with a middle class upbringing...
- olenick, on 05/06/2008, -0/+8They should've gotten the pleasure of working in the prison system and their earnings ($1-2/hr?) would be sent to pay off their former slave. The sentences also should have been much longer to act as a deterrent, the fine much higher, and their US property seized. A petty drug dealer would get a comparable sentence to these two creeps.
- blatantninja, on 05/06/2008, -1/+9It's called the poverty trap. Poor people don't have access to contraception or have religious reasons against it. And they can't afford any other forms of entertainment! It's a sad state, but it's been going on for a long, long time.

Everyone from the first wife's family was over him and could treat him however they wanted. He was even hung by his hands and caned quite often.
Surprisingly, he managed to turn into a decent person, but there have to be evil scars under the surface .... -
