- cs188, on 11/09/2009, -5/+2672Wow I REALLY misinterpreted that thumbnail image.
- philomatic, on 11/09/2009, -11/+787Divorce should be illegal... to, you know, protect the sanctity of marriage...
- rocknog, on 11/09/2009, -13/+533I don't understand why religion keeps being brought into the gay marriage debate. If marriage is a religious thing, then government shouldn't be involved in any marriage. I don't understand how opponents of gay marriage can get around that contradiction.
- mkriss5681, on 11/09/2009, -25/+479Gay people have the right to be miserable just like the rest of us.

- flip2trip, on 11/09/2009, -5/+299I have given a lot of thought to this issue. I am a Christian and am opposed to same-sex marriage, but I am also an American, and I value the over-riding principle of liberty this country was founded upon. As a liberty loving American I cannot, in good conscience, force people to adhere to my religious beliefs, nor do I expect them to do so of their own accord. If the government isn't going to get out of the marriage business altogether, (by changing all marriages to "legal unions") then anyone who wishes to be married to another person cannot have that right infringed upon. We are a nation of laws, and the 14th Amendment guarantees equal protection, which includes marriage w/o distinction to the race/gender of the couple.
- Basketcase590, on 11/09/2009, -0/+198I came for the thumbnail, and all I got was this keg stand
- Paranor01, on 11/09/2009, -17/+214cause the opponents of gay marriage think that marriage was created by a god rather than man. that's why.
marriage was a legal contract created to solidify the wealth of 2 families.
religion hijacked it, called it it's own, and now like a little child doesn't want to give it up.
for more examples of this behaviour, look at christmas (originally Yule as well as others), easter (originally Ostara), may day (beltaine), etc etc - Diefree, on 11/09/2009, -28/+199Ah yes the sanctity argument, the idiotic bigot's fallback.
- MidnightReign, on 11/09/2009, -1/+120I stopped coming to thumbnails years ago.
- Akairenn, on 11/09/2009, -2/+107"but there are no huge benefits to the piece of paper"

- slabdigger, on 11/09/2009, -0/+78And inheritance law, and medical proxies, and parental rights... etc.
All of which is why government is involved. - flip2trip, on 11/09/2009, -1/+73@Phelyx--I don't think you understood my post, and perhaps that is my fault. I said that I am opposed to same-sex marriage, that is I believe it is contradictory to my faith, but I'm not for imposing my beliefs onto others. It's just like I'm opposed to divorce, but I'm not going to tell people they cannot have one.
- PeanutCheeseBar, on 11/09/2009, -3/+73I almost dugg this, but any bride cool enough to do a keg stand is a keeper.

- Alphi1, on 11/09/2009, -5/+67Here's my solution to the problem:
Since it seems that "marriage" has some biblical (i.e. religious) basis, why not keep it as such?
Eliminate the idea of having to get a governmentally-provided "marriage license", and change it to a "civil union license", grandfathering all current marriage licenses to be considered civil union licenses. But going forward, the government would provide just a "civil union license" on a state-by-state basis, and each state would make the determination who qualifies for that - be it male with female, or male with male, or female with female, or even human with animal if that state should so choose.
As for the "marriage" part of it, leave that in the church. Continue to have churches have the ability to "marry" people, with the only difference being that they'd get a "civil union license" instead of a "marriage license". That way it's up to each church to determine if they will marry only heterosexual couples or what-not.
That way the "sanctity" of marriage is preserved, and yet allows for other types of unions as well. - StripeyMagee, on 11/09/2009, -0/+54And property rights.
- Diefree, on 11/09/2009, -1/+53Yea those queers can just pay alot of lawyer fees when I get the same rights for free and assumed! It's not like hospitals ever don't take those!

See how stupid your argument sounds now? - KahRahTay, on 11/09/2009, -4/+51if you only consider beliefs to be Christian if they have an unflinchingly literal interpretation of the bible, then unless you consider the earth to be flat, and are willing to stone adulterers and their families to death, then you, sir, are no christian either.
Isaiah 11:12 - earth has 4 corners
Ezekiel 7:2 - again, earth has 4 corners
Daniel 2:35 - a mountain filling the whole earth is only possible if the earth was flat
Matthew 4:8 - a mountain high enough for the whole earth to see would require a flat earth - same with Luke 4:5
Revelation 1:7 - every eye being able to see something would require a flat earth
Ezek. 23:43 Then I said, Ah, she is worn out with adulteries, but they carry on their sexual acts with her.23:44 For they have gone in to her, as one goes in to a whore. Thus they went in to Oholah and to Oholibah, wanton women.23:45 But righteous judges shall declare them guilty of adultery and of bloodshed; because they are adulteresses and blood is on their hands.23:46 For thus says the Lord GOD: Bring up an assembly against them, and make them an object of terror and of plunder.23:47 The assembly shall stone them and with their swords they shall cut them down; they shall kill their sons and their daughters, and burn up their houses.23:48 Thus will I put an end to lewdness in the land, so that all women may take warning and not commit lewdness as you have done.23:49 They shall repay you for your lewdness, and you shall bear the penalty for your sinful idolatry; and you shall know that I am the Lord GOD.
it's time to let go of the hypocrisy - WhiskeyLemur, on 11/09/2009, -1/+46Then atheists shouldn't be allowed to get married?
- Sidemarx, on 11/09/2009, -10/+54Not against gay marriage - but part of it does have to do with the tax recognition.
- reticulate, on 11/09/2009, -3/+45Ahh, the slippery slope. One of my favourite logical fallacies.

- Diefree, on 11/09/2009, -3/+40Uh no it's not. Marriage is a right as long as the government recognizes it. There's no reasonable argument against homosexuals having the same rights as hetrosexuals.

- cheapcheat, on 11/09/2009, -2/+35The Roman Catholic Church took Pagan traditions to convince the Germanic people to convert. That's why I laugh at the bumper stickers that say "keep Christ in Christmas". I want to make a bumper sticker that says "keep Germanic Paganism in Christmas"
- Diefree, on 11/09/2009, -7/+40Here are the real biblical marriages since you want to actually argue this. If you want to deny rights to people based on your religion expect me to show your religion's hypocrisy at every turn.

You are on the wrong side of history and will be remembered as the bigot you are. - carbonetc, on 11/09/2009, -2/+35Because most of them are under the illusion that this country was founded as a Christian nation and that it has only recently been infected by secularism.
- BillE3, on 11/09/2009, -7/+39They attacked the messanger not the message. They stopped reading after " I am Christian". As they wish to impose thier "freedom from religion" beliefs on everyone else.
- abraxsis, on 11/09/2009, -0/+31Well, see ... marriage isn't a governmental affair, at least not religiously. Religiously speaking, you can be married without it being civilly recognized with a license, tax benefits, etc. But to receive said tax benefits the government has to have some sort recording keeping. As I have often said the argument is generally not about gay marriage in its basic essence, it is the governmental recognition of said marriage, that homosexuals are after. If we removed these benefits and licensing requirements, having everyone being equal regardless of marital status or sexual orientation, I think you would see a large part of both sides of the argument calm down. At that point there is no governmental incentives to a largely personal/religious ceremony, which will naturally eliminate a majority of the protesters.
- Diefree, on 11/09/2009, -3/+34"A black person already has the same rights to marry a person of the same race. What is being sought is a special privilege."
It was a stupid statement against interracial marriage and it's a stupid statement now. - slabdigger, on 11/09/2009, -1/+32Imagine your infant son has to go to the hospital because he has a high fever, and you have to spend 1/2 hour on the phone explaining to the nurse that you are that you are the OTHER father, not the one they have on record, but the OTHER one, so that they will see him. She doesn't understand, because you didn't get married, that's not legal in your state, you just signed all the proper documents.
It's 14th amendment, equal protection under our constitution, straight up (so to speak). Equal marriage rights now. - appleofdischord, on 11/09/2009, -1/+31There's a shortage of perfect breasts in the world...
- s73v3r, on 11/09/2009, -1/+31Except a pair of opposite-sex siblings could procreate, and its been proven that such offspring can be damaging to the gene pool. There's a reason why incest is discouraged.
Homosexual couples won't procreate by themselves, and if they wish to raise children without adopting will have to seek out a 3rd party to help them, either a surrogate mother or a sperm donor. The screening process should filter out potential relatives, thus negating the risk of incestuous offspring. - Apokalyps2547, on 11/09/2009, -2/+31A post based on introspection and philosophical principle? On MY digg?!
- ReplicantSeven, on 11/09/2009, -0/+29I agree. That being said, the government shouldn't be in the religion business at all, which means the government should have no business marrying people (even straight couples). The state should only do "civil unions" (or whatever term you want to use here) - for heterosexual and homosexual couples.
Leave it upto the churches to decide if you are "married in the eyes of God". The state doesn't have to care or rule on the validity of what churches think, anymore than it chooses which god is right, etc.
In sum: If you want to be "fully married" in the eyes of the church and state, it should be 2 separate things. 1) Go get your civil union paperwork. 2) Go get it "god-stamped" by your church in whatever ceremony you think is best. - bowlagoat, on 11/09/2009, -1/+29I loved the man show. I'm just not sure how the chant applies.
- bdfariello, on 11/09/2009, -0/+27Why stop there? Ban people from getting married if they've ever had pre-marital sex, too.
- Diefree, on 11/09/2009, -1/+27It's about the stuff that comes with that piece of paper. Hospital visitation, assumed joint custody of children, insurance, assumed inheritance of the estate. As long as homosexuals are denied rights they are second class citizens which makes America hypocritical.
