- presidentraygun, on 05/05/2009, -3/+128He's gonna be sitting around in his room a few years from now wishing he had a pair of breasts to play with, DOH!
- dquan, on 05/05/2009, -2/+103No, you may not transfer boobs to your hand.
- Renfamous, on 05/04/2009, -2/+79Uh.
"Alex has been diagnosed with "gender identity dysphoria'', in which a person has the normal physical characteristics of one sex but longs to be the opposite. "
I don't see anything about his chromosomes in there. The kid in question is a genetic female but is taking steps to better resemble a male. Not saying that the court decision is wrong, I just don't think your comment is correct. - manzplan, on 05/04/2009, -13/+79Although I dont understand it, I agree with it.
- Narcism, on 05/05/2009, -4/+68Is there any way to transfer those to my girlfriend?
- banksey, on 05/05/2009, -5/+62I just wrote a huge ass paper about this and there is a lot more to it than doing what they want. Even though this surgery is not permanent it does mean that other sex reassignment surgeries could be allowed at a young age like this. There is a high percentage of regret after the surgery is performed and a lot of the time the sex reassignment surgeries can be irreversible. That's why they make sure that the person who is going through with the surgery has lived and experienced life of the opposite sex and that they've gone through extensive psychoanalysis. I'm not saying it's wrong but it's a decision to not be taken lightly.
- blitzkriegpunk, on 05/05/2009, -1/+56I see what you did there.
- tgjerusalem, on 05/04/2009, -10/+59The judge's decision is appropriate and heartening, showing growing legal recognition of the social and medical needs of trans people, but this is a horribly written article.
Standard journalistic guidelines from the the Associated Press Style book specify that when writing about transgender people, <i>"Use the pronoun preferred by the individuals who have acquired the physical characteristics of the opposite sex or present themselves in a way that does not correspond with their sex at birth. If that preference is not expressed, use the pronoun consistent with the way the individuals live publicly.”</i>
Alex, his family, and the judge indicate that not only does he currently live as a man, he has done so for years. To refer to him as “she” is unprofessional and incorrect.
And I don't know where they found the "ethicist" cited in the article, or where he found his information. Gender dysphoria is not a “psychosis” according to the DMV, and changing one’s life in order to live as the appropriate gender, including medical procedures like hormonal therapy and reconstructive surgery, is the only recognized treatment. - Megadeth222, on 05/05/2009, -23/+69. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . _________

- charlie6969, on 05/05/2009, -3/+40It must be so hard to have always felt you were born the wrong sex.
My opinion about the right and wrong of it are immaterial. - Natendo64, on 05/05/2009, -15/+48She better not be hot.
- inactive, on 05/05/2009, -1/+29No, it just makes you ejaculate a lot faster.
- ZellD, on 05/05/2009, -6/+32I met a kid who at age 8 asked his parents to change gender. They told him he was crazy, sent him to therapy, etc. This resulted in self-attempted castration. After his parents finally accepted the reality and allowed him to get a gender change, go on hormones, etc he did much better and became a highly functioning and healthy middle school girl.
Kids can and do know these things and attempting to stop them can result in a lot of damage.
Of course the whole process takes almost two years of therapy before medication. It's not like they start right away. - Lionhart, on 05/05/2009, -0/+25Shes been on hormonal treatments since she was 13 to look like a boy, so I doubt it.
- rolf, on 05/05/2009, -5/+29Can I have them?
- WakeRider, on 05/05/2009, -1/+22Those rights go out the window if he wants to use the taxpayers' dime.
FTA: "Justice Bryant said it was better for the teenager to have the surgery at 17 as she would qualify for support from state social services..."
That quote makes me believe Alex wants the surgery as soon as possible so the state can pay for it, because otherwise if he was 18, the surgery is deemed cosmetic and isn't paid for by the state.
People have the right to do as they wish with their own bodies, but the taxpayers shouldn't have to pay the bill. If he really wants to be a boy, he should save up and pay his own way. - Hraes, on 05/05/2009, -5/+26@willhirsch: sounds right.
- willhirsch, on 05/05/2009, -5/+26That's a pretty poor generalisation. If marijuana fits your notion of a human right, so do heroin, cocaine, crystal meth and suicide
- chriswastaken, on 10/27/2009, -2/+20Dugg for self correcting comments.
- inactive, on 05/05/2009, -0/+17Amazing what some will do to get pot into the conversation; agreed, though.
- wentwhere, on 05/05/2009, -2/+17Are you joking? A legitimate psychological state and wanting to be a famous actor? You're really going to compare the two?
I bet you're a treat in a political debate. - scarymuffin, on 05/05/2009, -0/+15>You are what you are, accept your body the way it is, and don't fight nature. Or jump off a bridge.
So if I were born with a terrible deformity that could be easily corrected with surgery I should just live with it or kill myself instead?
You have to remember that gender dysphoric people aren't randomly choosing to feel they way they do. It's "natural" for them to feel like the opposite sex. So, as you said, why fight nature? - presidentraygun, on 05/05/2009, -1/+16Just a joke... I have nothing against the transgendered.
- Hraes, on 05/05/2009, -2/+16Seriously?
- christoast, on 05/05/2009, -4/+18Yep. Heroin, cocaine, crystal meth and suicide. Everyone has the right to do all of that. Every country in the world is denying peoples basic human rights regarding drugs.
I think you should have to take an objective, scientific, informative class on the drug you want to buy and take a test before you are allowed to buy the drug. Its ethical in respecting peoples rights AND its responsible distribution. - samsmartjr, on 05/05/2009, -0/+13If I find her hot as a girl and then she becomes a boy, does that make me gay?
- mirot, on 05/05/2009, -1/+14There's definitely gonna be some ***** up comments on this one
- Feener, on 05/05/2009, -1/+14So at 17 years and 364 days he couldn't make the decision but the next day he would be magically imbued with a superior intellect capable of understanding the situation better?
- VenDrake, on 05/05/2009, -3/+15It's true that she has the right to remove them if she wants; but if she ever successfully becomes a he, he's really gonna miss 'em.
Which brings up a good point actually. Are they gonna be on E-bay or anything? - commershy, on 05/05/2009, -22/+34Big big irreversible decision
Too young - jeexbit, on 05/05/2009, -0/+12You would be surprised...
- Twag86, on 05/05/2009, -0/+12People have been fighting nature for years. Modern medicine is fighting nature, so next time you get sick, just let that ***** take care of its self, or you know, jump off a bridge.
- apzdsx, on 05/05/2009, -0/+11I'm guessing the debate would go something like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJJA1vvMc4I - GrammerPants, on 05/05/2009, -2/+12So you prefer she just kills herself then and not have a choice to do what she wants to her own body?
- Fabbyfubz, on 05/05/2009, -0/+9I hope you don't become a psychologist, because you do it bad.
- mitchrichie, on 05/05/2009, -0/+9ah, you beat me to it. I call dibs next time.
- AnonthePyro, on 05/05/2009, -0/+8the right pronoun is him, unless the person wants to be called that
- bubbameister33, on 05/05/2009, -0/+8What do you care? He's too old for you.
- inactive, on 05/05/2009, -0/+8Ya, but now that she can jog comfortably, she's in the best shape of her life.
- wentwhere, on 05/05/2009, -3/+10"Why have other guys stopped being nice to me all of a sudden?!"
Jk, I don't get how this is even an issue if it was deemed medically in her best interest to do the procedure before her 18th birthday and she's going to do it one way or another. - tgjerusalem, on 05/05/2009, -1/+8No they won't. Lab results, treatments and most gender specific health problems are hormonally based. After being on testosterone for any significant length of time, one will have the lab results, medical risks and treatment options typical of other men of the same age and health. If a trans man has had a hysterectomy, for hospital purposes the only major medical difference between them and other men would be the total immunity to prostate cancer.
And yes, of course gender is much more than outward appearance. Which is why despite outward appearance at birth, he is a man. - MacroDaemon, on 05/05/2009, -15/+22Justice Bryant said it was better for the teenager to have the surgery at 17 as she would qualify for support from state social services, and it was also a crucial time in her social and mental development.
The state shouldn't cover voluntary stuff like this. - browwiw, on 05/05/2009, -5/+12You can't slap an imaginary friend in the face.
- inactive, on 05/05/2009, -0/+6Vaseline is THE worst lubricant its too thick. You're better off with hand lotion or baby oil.
- dty2010, on 05/05/2009, -1/+7But you can pretend to.
- trapper2530, on 05/05/2009, -0/+6im glad someone actually got that
- reddevild, on 05/05/2009, -0/+6unless it's a leap year
- Swivelstick, on 05/05/2009, -1/+7"There's an entire country that the only 'live-able' way of income is farming coca. And as a result this country has one of the highest crime rates." Which is a result of the US war on drugs and the destabilization of the region by the US for both corporate greed and stupidity.
