- getsome2k, on 11/04/2009, -8/+79Sounds like an interesting class where you might actually learn something, sign me up!
- awtripp, on 11/04/2009, -1/+64Their minds were probably on the verge of implosion when they heard Darwin was being challenged by homosexuality in nature.
- Tarkaan, on 11/04/2009, -2/+58"...someone complained about the optional homework assignment he provided his sophomore students." ... "...the Board of Education and administration did not suspend him over "homophobic condemnation" but rather because of the age appropriateness of the material."
Yes. High School Sophomores don't know what homosexuality is.
The teacher says, "...our community has been unjustly misrepresented as bigoted and narrow-minded."
Unjustly? - pintomp3, on 11/04/2009, -3/+58Darwin is left? I guess science, being reality based, has a liberal bias.
- inactive, on 11/04/2009, -1/+44Haha, loving the thumbnail for the story.
- Nick217, on 11/04/2009, -4/+44Guessing they're not fans of Yogi and Booboo either. :(
- TeamBaldwin, on 11/04/2009, -5/+44I grew up about a half hour from this school and am not at all surprised by this. It's a very rural, conservative/Christian area. Good to hear his suspension was lifted.
- JinxCrow, on 11/04/2009, -1/+40"age appropriate material"? It's high school, they've already learned their gay jokes by then.
- soomprimal, on 11/04/2009, -1/+38Aren't sophomores like 15 or 16? I thought maybe if he was an elementary school teacher but...
Talking about scientifically documented animal behavior with 15 YOs is inappropriate?
Wow, no, don't worry, we don't think you're a bunch of bigots, we just think you're a bunch of hyper-sensitive babies! - Nitrodist88, on 11/04/2009, -1/+36No true fan of Darwin blindly follows whatever Darwin said. They follow the scientific method, which is what Darwin would have wanted.
- iopasd, on 11/04/2009, -2/+36we are all ***** animals
- RonADiSH, on 11/04/2009, -4/+37how homophobic can you get?
- KrazyMon2, on 11/04/2009, -1/+25According to the board they were worried it wasn't age appropriate. By the time you're a sophomore aren't you around 16 or 17? I think that by that age kids have realized that homosexuals exist. That is one lousy excuse if you ask me.
- falconear, on 11/04/2009, -3/+27So stupid. Homosexuality in the animal kingdom is well documented. Dolphins have homosexual rape gangs. True story.
- kiingdano, on 11/04/2009, -1/+23only a ***** moron would try to label science as left or right wing.
you know,
like bible thumping morons who think that scientists are all left-wing.
way to show the rest of the world just how ignorant and ass backwards WASP America can be, you've truly done a great service for all of America.
Dumbass. - enclaved, on 11/04/2009, -1/+23you are a sad ***** trying to attribute political bias to nature.
the world is not out to get you or persecute you for your ideals.
it only seems that way because you're retarded. - kristov, on 11/04/2009, -4/+25You would think the narrow minded bigoted community there would have embraced an assignment that argues against Darwin.
- Opiebreath, on 11/04/2009, -1/+19It challenges Darwin, so shouldn't they like it?
- TeamBaldwin, on 11/04/2009, -0/+17@opiebreath I imagine the problem was the homosexuality, not Darwin. I can picture a students complaint going along the lines of "WHAT! My pigs ain't no damn queers".
- Dimensio, on 11/04/2009, -0/+16Please explain your inquiry. In what way is Darwin "left".
- Awwzm, on 11/04/2009, -0/+16Makin' Bacon
- stanleyford, on 11/04/2009, -0/+16"Boy, you've got a pretty blow hole."
- ygeoff419, on 11/04/2009, -0/+14***** that! Shaggy was gay as ***** but Scooby was a smooth pimp who loved the pussy!
- askantik, on 11/04/2009, -0/+14Homosexuality does not conflict with evolution.
- iopasd, on 11/04/2009, -2/+15Next they will want to teach our kids that we came from apes. The nerve of some people.
- DDRSkata, on 11/04/2009, -1/+14So an essay about a scientific occurrence couldn't be written in such a way that it would be of literary value, or at least a proper illustration of form?
- Hayley3AM, on 11/04/2009, -1/+14ok, ok, you have a point. but at least talking about gay pigs won't get you in hot water at most universities.
- enclaved, on 11/04/2009, -1/+14It was a reading assignment.
and it was optional.
Material not suited for an English class? I guess dem dere words are not supposed to go together.
I guess Romeo and Juliet isn't appropriate for an English class either huh? All that murder and underage sex and what not?
I guess future generations will have to grow up reading the dictionary? or is that too racy too?
this school and its administration are *****. the letter from the teacher and the board look like someone realized the administration ***** up and the only excuse they could come up with was that it wasn't appropriate for the age group, which is even more absurd then homophobia. - doctechnical, on 11/04/2009, -2/+14Shaggy and Scoob?
- doctechnical, on 11/04/2009, -2/+14"Squeal like a pig!"
- FDisk, on 11/04/2009, -1/+138=========================================================================O This big!
- Hayley3AM, on 11/04/2009, -2/+13or bert and ernie?
- Dimensio, on 11/04/2009, -0/+10Humans are apes, by biological definition.
- Zaxcomp, on 11/04/2009, -1/+10Wanna see some good indoctrination, go to a sunday school.
- AngelaQ, on 11/04/2009, -0/+9They didn't link to the original article the students were supposed to read. But the story says that the article attempted to challenge Darwin's theory of natural (they used the term "sexual") selection by demonstrating the existence of homosexuality in the animal kingdom.
I suspect the article actually failed, since not only does the existence of homosexuality NOT challenge natural selection, in fact it pretty much proves that it is not against the mythical "laws of nature". So then it's okay, right? - doctechnical, on 11/04/2009, -11/+20We don't need details of your sex life, iopassd. And speak for yourself, please.
- TeamBaldwin, on 11/04/2009, -1/+10I can blame it on being Christian and Conservative because I know the area and I know people from the area. Does being Christian or Conservative instantly make you stupid? Of course not. But you're talking about a group of students who live in the middle of nowhere with nothing to look at but crops. I would estimate that 30% of my graduating class went right back to the farm and our town is far more white collar than theirs is. This school is actually a collection of several "villages" and is still only around 300-450 students.
Needless to say the area is sheltered. Its true middle America. And if the good book says that homosexuality is bad, well then damn it, its bad! That's just the mindset. Go ahead and say I'm stereotyping but if you've lived there you'd understand - TalahRama, on 11/04/2009, -0/+9I agree with technical. You're completely discounting the plant-***** demographic.
- indyGuy, on 11/04/2009, -2/+10Um, you think college is the truth? Professors have agendas - much more so than elementary or high school teachers...
- mishabear, on 11/04/2009, -0/+8Since when is eduaction "inappropriate"?
- Marc11, on 11/04/2009, -0/+8Because there's a genuine scientific problem with incest? ...
- AiR1890, on 11/04/2009, -1/+9Welcome to America buddy, land of the biggest hypocrites you will ever encounter, land of double standards.
- DDRSkata, on 11/04/2009, -0/+8If teaching kids facts is indoctrination, we should do more of that. Better to indoctrinate them with truth than with lies.
- AngelaQ, on 11/04/2009, -0/+7RTA. Little children? This was in high school.
- Mujokan, on 11/04/2009, -2/+9It's always kind of funny when people bring out homosexuality as an argument against Darwin. I guess if you think God created homosexuality it's not a contradiction, but it seems like most people who are anti-evolution are probably also believers in the Biblical comments on gay sex. (And maybe the teacher doesn't agree with the argument, but at least the person who wrote the article he gave out would have had to face up to this one.)
- zackeous, on 11/04/2009, -0/+7I graduated from this school in '98. I'm really surprised that this article made it on Digg... the school is tiny. But for what it's worth I'd like to give you my opinion on the matter.
Dan was a great, articulate teacher--something severely lacking at that school when I was going there. I read the original article that was optional for these "kids", the other day through a local news website. I loves me some science, and it was an interesting piece, however, the scientist has much more work to do. She might be on to something though... still it won't be a massive overhaul in Darwinian theory.
That aside, I think the material is very age appropriate. Dan's apology, I'm guessing, was more coerced than sincere. He knows just as well as I that the area is prudish, bigoted, racist, and the like. Of course many people would be offended by what "happened" to their kids, but Health class still teaches Sex Ed at 5th grade, with a reiteration/in depth teaching Freshman year. From what I remember, the other English classes brought up many manuscripts/material that in its time or another had sparked debates and were socially crucial.
In my opinion he was given flack simply because of the material mentioning Darwin's theories outside of science class. There are a lot right-wing Christians... very fundamental in that area. It's really no surprise at all that they raised hell, and turned it into a charade about something else.
Not only is Dan a great teach, but he's a bad-ass guitar player... I guess he's really playing the blues now. What a shame. - thecoolestguy, on 11/04/2009, -2/+9actually we came from apes. Apes means members of the Hominoidea family, which included the common ancestor of all modern great apes, including humans.
- Hayley3AM, on 11/04/2009, -4/+10Dang, I wish they taught this curriculum when I went to high school. It's so sad that half your childhood education is mostly lies (lying by omission, of course) until you get to college.
- DarkGerbil, on 11/04/2009, -1/+7"On a personal note, what has disappointed me most over this past week was that our community has been unjustly misrepresented as bigoted and narrow-minded. Having been raised in this community, I am disappointed by such accusations."
He doesn't mean what you think he meeeaaans. I love it! - pintomp3, on 11/04/2009, -4/+10"being Christian or conservative" "being stupid, retarded morons" The two are not mutually exclusive.
