Teacher Fired After Wearing a Bikini on Howard Stern Show
wfsb.com — A Southington teacher who appeared on the Howard Stern Show no longer has a job at Thalberg Elementary School. Second-grade teacher Marie Jarry took part in an Ugliest Guy and Hottest Wife contest on Stern's show. She and her husband won $5,000. "I can't believe she would go on TV and do that when she is a second-grade teacher."

- lucidguru, on 05/09/2008, -13/+639Yup, it's become apparent... teachers aren't allowed to be people anymore... not only will we not pay them enough, but we demand that they spend all their time at home alone when they aren't at school.
- neognostic, on 05/09/2008, -6/+191Here is the email address of Dr. Joseph V. Erardi, Jr.Superintendent of Schools - jerardi@southingtonschools.org
My family has 5 teachers, and I've seen them all in bathing suits, and somehow I managed to still grow up normally, except for my digg addiction.- oletexasgal, on 05/09/2008, -135/+7she wasn't just wearing a swimsuit. She was hanging out of a bikini and working beside topless coworkers for the explicit entertainment of men. Huge difference! Wake up.
- neognostic, on 05/09/2008, -2/+78OMG! That means those girls in the ads in newspapers, magazines, and on TV clad only in a bra and panties should be whipped, and my eyes torn out for looking at them too. Wake up prude.
- CharlesMay, on 05/09/2008, -0/+84Yea, what you said EXCEPT that with your argument how the hell does that affect a 2nd grade child? The real problem would be with the parents allowing their 2nd grade child to watch Howard Stern! Go back to sleep, it's past your bedtime.
- nblsavage, on 05/09/2008, -1/+60and? Was she doing it while teaching her class?
- BetterOffEd, on 05/09/2008, -2/+62"A 55 year-old female from Texas (US) who joined Digg on May 9th, 2008"
Just joined Digg TODAY? Hmmm.... I smell a troll......

- dondara, on 05/09/2008, -9/+25"no offense to normal people that also happen to live in Texas"
Yeah, all both of them - BetterOffEd, on 05/09/2008, -4/+12C'mon... Austin is cool and you know it.
. - drakenlot, on 05/09/2008, -7/+6Normal people are in Texas? Wow.
- Fullvinyl, on 05/09/2008, -1/+9Don't worry, they're just passing through; they'll be in New Mexico soon enough.
- PolarBearCa, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2Do you really think both of them read Digg?
- dondara, on 05/09/2008, -9/+25"no offense to normal people that also happen to live in Texas"
- inigomntoya, on 05/09/2008, -0/+10Am I the only one that didn't get that from the article? All i read was that while wearing a bikini, she made sexual references about her husband. Who hasn't been to a county fair and seen/heard the same stuff?
- positron, on 05/09/2008, -4/+1*raises hand* WTF is a county fair?
- jgzman, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4If you don't know, it is better to stay clear. Some things man was not meant to know.

A class I would never be late to.
- DonCarcharo, on 05/09/2008, -2/+62Complaining to the superintendent is pointless. This is her fault. She should have read that wanted ad for the teaching position a little more closely...
"Position requires a college degree, multiple certifications, ongoing training, seminars and extensive background checks and clearances. While all teachers will receive summers off (which is convenient because you'll need a second job in order to survive on this salary), please note that this is a full time position and therefore you will be expected to assume the role of a teacher, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in public and in private. As such, we suggest you spend your spare time at home creating lesson plans and grading assignments. Don't even think of having a social life - it will not be tolerated. Males are encouraged to stay far, far away from this position unless they want to end up as chemically castrated sexual offenders." - madeingermany, on 05/09/2008, -0/+9Exactly! And if there are any parents that let their 2nd graders watch the Howard Stern Show, they need to be fired!
- mpancha, on 05/09/2008, -1/+7I guess Howard Stern has a huge 2nd grade fan base.... makes sense.

- subliminalurge, on 05/09/2008, -1/+17Also.... The WOMAN was a teacher.
- halobender, on 05/09/2008, -0/+17The point is it just means less teachers. Who wants to put up with this ***** after being college educated.

- WasabiBomb, on 05/09/2008, -1/+34Please explain why anyone should be concerned about a teachers off-duty, LEGAL actions.
- TheHayze, on 05/09/2008, -0/+17And? So? You're saying teachers aren't allowed to have lives outside of class? I dunno about YOUR kids, but I certainly wouldn't allow them to watch the Howard Stern Show. Especially if they were in the 2nd grade.
- eddie72, on 05/09/2008, -0/+11What are you 80? She was in a bikini. People wear those at the beach. Yeah she wasn't at a beach but you are saying Teachers aren't normal human beings?
- norman619, on 05/09/2008, -0/+8So I take it teachers aren't allowed to wear or be seen in a bathing suit? You've been sitting on your brain a bit too long.
- CryRightardCry, on 05/09/2008, -1/+1You are remarkably stupid.
Congrats!- mikeej, on 05/09/2008, -2/+2She didn't deserve to be fired in fact it was disgraceful, but, she should have seen it coming and should have thought twice before going on.
- nonymous666, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2Digg needs a special option where once a day, you can press the 'digg down' button to do 10 buries (or more?) instead of just one. Just once a day.

- BetterOffEd, on 05/09/2008, -1/+12With summers off? Sign me up too...
- p51d007, on 05/09/2008, -69/+6Ok, here is the deal. When you are put in a position of RESPONSIBILITY, then you MUST act accordingly. Teachers, judges politicians, police officers, military personnel should be held to a HIGHER STANDARD, than "normal" citizens, because of the position of trust they
have, given their position. Granted, firing her is a little overboard, not knowing exactly what was said on the air, but, when you are put in position, such as a ELEMENTARY TEACHER, you have to have the good judgment to go along with that position.- h3lx, on 05/09/2008, -0/+30Hot ass and a nice rack netting $5000 seems like great judgement to me.
- o0joshua0o, on 05/09/2008, -1/+33Are bikinis legally considered obscene or lewd? If not, she has not overstepped her bounds.
- WasabiBomb, on 05/09/2008, -1/+28If teachers aren't allowed to have private lives in which they can do whatever the hell they want, assuming it's legal, the PAY THEM MORE. They're individuals, not live-in nannybots for your offspring. They teach your children facts- YOU teach your children how to behave.
- compdude32, on 05/09/2008, -11/+2I am so sick and tired of the ass hats who thing teachers don't make good money.
http://www.payscale.com/research/US/All_K-12_Teach ...
Lets look just at the elementary teacher, cause that is what she is, the average is $39,332
Now lets look at how many days a teacher actually works.
http://nces.ed.gov/surveys/pss/tables/table_15.asp
180 school days a year, I will be nice and add 3 weeks for in-service days and such. so that is 195 days a year a teacher works, or 170 days off, not counting vacation and sick time.
$39.331 divided by 195 is $201.70 per day worked or $1008.49 per week worked, if they actually worked a full 52 weeks a year they would be making $52,441.33. Is that amazing pay? no, is it horrible pay? no way, especially considering the 170+ days a year they don't have to work.
So please stop this stupidity, Teachers make decent money.- Nitrodist88, on 05/10/2008, -0/+3***** that. They're making $40,000 a year with 4 years of college behind them, certification and only God knows what else. They're also stuck in a room for 7+ hours a day with children who mostly don't want to be there. Then, they have to teach them facts to get them ready for their life. This is a lot of responsibility and $40k a year isn't enough at all.
Also, if you think teaching is a 8-3/4/5 job (etc.), let me tell you: it isn't by a long shot. You have lesson plans, recertification, after school meetings, meetings in general, meeting with parents, extra curricular activities....
Hell *NO* $40k a year isn't worth it. During the summer months you get ready for the rest of your year, anyway, so it's basically being unpaid to do that work that you're expected to do anyway.
The federal government isn't doing ***** either. Only 2.3% ( http://www.ed.gov/about/overview/fed/role.html ) of the federal budget in 2008 was put to use for the Educational Department. Compare that to some 40% of the budget was put towards the department of Defense...
All in all, it's a ***** deal. Teachers deserve to be paid more. - compdude32, on 05/13/2008, -0/+0You can't read can you?
- Nitrodist88, on 05/10/2008, -0/+3***** that.
- jgzman, on 05/09/2008, -2/+7The things, they don't work 52 weeks a year. Also, does that 180 days count weekends and federal holidays? If not the rest of your math is useless.
Second, Teachers do a great deal of work both after school and over the summer. This work is unpaid.
Third, considering the importance of what they do, they do not get paid enough. Education of children is a crucial job, and should be compensated accordingly.- Monk22, on 05/09/2008, -3/+1"This work is unpaid."
so they dont get paychecks for being a teacher? - piginawig, on 05/09/2008, -1/+4Maybe if you read the sentence before it that said they are unpaid for their work after school and over the summer.
- Monk22, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1so your really that stupid to belive their salary doesnt include work done over the summer. its actually illegal to not pay someone for work they have done. so using non retard logic it would be assumed the work they do over the summer is factored in to their pay.
- compdude32, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Your right, they don't work 52 weeks a year, There are a ton of careers that pay far less than $40,000 and they do have to work 52 weeks a year, that would be torture for a teacher, I mean can you image them not getting their 100+ days a year off.
You guys can whine and cry all you want, but teachers make decent money and get killer time off.
- Monk22, on 05/09/2008, -3/+1"This work is unpaid."

- Metman, on 05/09/2008, -0/+12Why does it matter that she teaches? Who could be watching that it would influence? The kids? No. The parents? Maybe - so are they bad parents then?
What she does in her spare time - as long as it does not infringe upon the rights of others - is her business.
The problem here is not her problem, it is YOUR problem. My guess is you somehow connect bikinis with sex, even worse you are somehow connecting said sex with children. It is not HER but YOU that has a problem. - a6n28f, on 05/09/2008, -0/+8"must" "should" "have to" blah blah blah
Why, exactly?
Doesn't it bother you that you cannot articulate a basis for your opinion? Critical thinking and coherent, cogent arguments will trump gut feelings everytime. Absent that, my "feeling" that you are simple, judegmental moron holds as much water as your opinion of this teacher.- mrgreenjeans, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1zing!
- myststrngr, on 05/09/2008, -0/+9It's not like she was trying to catch hot dogs in her mouth for a new boob job... she wore a bikini for $5000. *****, I'd wear a bikini on HS for $5000.
- norman619, on 05/09/2008, -0/+9Since when is wearing a bathing suit in public acting irresponsibly?
- wardsac, on 05/09/2008, -0/+15Get over yourself. Teachers are people. You want us to act like judges? Pay us like judges.
- CryRightardCry, on 05/09/2008, -1/+8Moron.
I can't believe how many ***** are actually arguing that this woman should be ashamed to be in a bikini.
What's the deal with this right wing stupidity that forces us to PRETEND that bodies are shameful?
What a bunch of *****.- norman619, on 05/09/2008, -0/+5It's not right wing anything. It's plain stupidity.
- Beaver1279, on 05/10/2008, -1/+0People in authority should be held to the exact same standards as the rest of us.
- Abomonog, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1She didn't do anything irresponsible or illegal. She just showed up on Howard Stearn in a bikini.
If she had shown up on Jerry Springer in a bikini she would still have her job. It even says in the article that the only reason she was fired is for appearing on Howard Stearn.
- Merendino, on 05/09/2008, -2/+81Whats even more ***** up, is that the Howard Stern show is regulated so that adults only watch it. Why would they care if a 2nd grade teacher was on it. Her students can't watch the show anyhow.... why the ***** have ratings if you're not going to use them like they are intended.... ***** AMATEURS!
- cha5e, on 05/09/2008, -0/+8Thank you. That is exactly what I was going to say, but you beat me to it. I seriously doubt that even a single student in her class, or her entire school, was aware of her appearance on the show until/unless their parents got all up in arms, so where is the harm?
- DeathfireD, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3My guess is one of parents where watching the show and noticed that their child's teacher was on it and became over protective and brought it up with the school board. I think things like this get blown out of proportion because of hypocritical and overprotective parents. The school board just doesn't want to get sued so they try and comply with all the crap parents put them through.
- cha5e, on 05/09/2008, -0/+8Thank you. That is exactly what I was going to say, but you beat me to it. I seriously doubt that even a single student in her class, or her entire school, was aware of her appearance on the show until/unless their parents got all up in arms, so where is the harm?
- Ghstfce, on 05/09/2008, -1/+51Honestly, I had a really hot 5th grade teacher. If I had even seen her in a bikini I think I would have gotten straight A's. I'd hang on to every word she ever said. I don't see what the problem was, it's not like she rode the Sybian thing, she was in a bikini. Wow, big deal. And is she not allowed to go to the beach because of the people that would see her? Stupid F'ing people. No wonder this world is nothing but pussies nowadays.
- rockefeller2, on 05/09/2008, -2/+1and I still can't get laid.
- Carlix, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4You mean USA, and some arabic countries?
- je12u, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1I like how you censored out "*****" but spelled out "pussies" while talking about people being pussies.
- shmatt, on 05/09/2008, -17/+16Title is very inaccurate-- she WASN'T fired, she resigned. the superintendent said they had not even discussed the matter prior to her resigning. The ones to blame are the local sensationalist news media that blew the story waaaay out of proportion.
- BetterOffEd, on 05/09/2008, -6/+18"The Southington School wouldn't say whether Jarry was forced out...."
Kudos to someone who actually READ the article. It never actually said that she was fired.
.- nonymous666, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2Either way, it should be a NON ISSUE.
- BetterOffEd, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1I completely agree. Just lookin' for a little TRUTH in storytelling, that's all....
- harveywalbanger, on 05/10/2008, -1/+1She was fired by proxy you pinhead.
- BetterOffEd, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1I have no problem at all with her actions on the show, but it's very possible that she may have QUIT out of embarrassment before the administration even had a chance to evaluate the matter when the story got out. The entire issue is the media getting a hold of this and blowing up like they did.
Read between the lines before you comment you *****' idiot.

- acdcfanbill, on 05/09/2008, -2/+33Yes, because it would be against the law to fire her for something like that, so they just apply pressure and get the local media involved and whip up some controversy with parents forcing her to resign. It's still a sham.
- shmatt, on 05/09/2008, -0/+10Well, of course I needed to see a picture, i googled this and it said the school board didn't care too much:
School Superintendent Joseph Erardi said the district had no discussion regarding termination and accepted Jarry's resignation immediately. The resignation was submitted after Marie Jarry had spoken to a lawyer, her husband indicated on Stern's show.
"She submitted an irrevocable letter of resignation to me, which I accepted," Erardi said Thursday. "Any reports that she was terminated are not true. I do not intend to make any further comments on this matter, given it is a personnel matter."
http://www.myrecordjournal.com/site/tab1.cfm?newsi ... - drakenlot, on 05/09/2008, -1/+21True, maybe she resigned because $5000 was more than she would ever earn as a teacher.
- Monk22, on 05/09/2008, -0/+25000>40,000?
- dbalaski, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1agreed --- this is Connecticut , $40K is starting salary for a teacher ...

- inigomntoya, on 05/09/2008, -2/+15Remember when you saw your first grade teacher at the grocery store for the first time and you were like - "Wha?! I thought you LIVED at school!"
Its too bad she got fired for this - especially since it was on the Howard Stern show. Come on - what do people EXPECT to see when they tune into Howard Stern!
"Hey Tommy! I hear teacher is going to be on Howard Stern tonight. Do you think she will be wearing her red pant suit or that long purple dress?" Here's an idea - don't let your kids watch Howard Stern. MAYBE record it and show it to them at their High School graduation party... - NeoCortex, on 05/09/2008, -0/+42I like the comment from the last person in the video linked in the article:
"People say she was great with the children and a phenomenal teacher, and sometimes that's important, too"
Sometimes that's important too? *****. Shouldn't that be the primary thing that matters? - NotOptium, on 05/09/2008, -0/+9A teacher at my old high school got fired a year ago because he was in a play with his wife, and in it his wife said "*****". It made its way to Youtube and that was grounds for firing him. The day he was fired the best teacher the school had ever seen put in his resignation papers.
- jgsketch, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4If this keeps up, there will only be ugly teachers in school. How will my son be able to daydream then?
- culbeda, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2For the record, she wasn't actually fired, but they did railroad her into quiting. Her husband talked about this on the Stern show, but he couldn't go into any real detail other than to say that "there was a great amount of pressure" and that "there really wasn't anything else she could do". The worst part is that she was tenured.

- ita4ever, on 05/09/2008, -21/+226Amen lucidguru. This is the biggest load of crap I've ever heard. Just b/c she was on the Stern show? Please! All those bible-thumpers are screwing everything up. She didn't do anything obscene/lewd. Just in a bikini, wow, what a messed up country we're living in.
- Argentian, on 05/09/2008, -53/+7It's not bible-thumbers you little squirt. There are many more Humanists out there who are prudes to the nth degree. Don't just reflexively blame someone who uses the bible to read the word of God. Especially if that bible is called or Koran, or your head may adorn the end of a pike near a mosque doorway.
- oletexasgal, on 05/09/2008, -50/+3Bible thumpers ? Oh puhlease. This was exploitative (look it up) and inappropriate for a school teacher.
- Spire3660, on 05/09/2008, -2/+39By who's measure? yours? Do you think she should have been fired for going to the BEACH in a bikini too? Grow up, what she does outside of school is none of the district's business.
- dondara, on 05/09/2008, -0/+12Exploitive? WTF are you talking about? She got the money and had some fun till some blue nosed assclowns screwed it all up because they can't deal with their bodies. Sexuality is nothing to be ashamed of. Telling others how to behave is.

- CrazedLeper, on 05/09/2008, -13/+2Is the termination of a single teacher's employment the straw that breaks your back? With all else that's wrong with the US, is *this* the clincher? Interesting set of priorities you have there.
- Metman, on 05/09/2008, -1/+2Really? Our brains are not capable of handling more then the number of issues you deem important? You sir, are exactly what is going wrong in this country. Your mother told you that you were special and you believed her. So now every issue you deem important is the end-all-be-all of matters and anyone who pays attention or find problems more significant not listed in your top 10 obviously has mental issues or bad priorities. - ProfessorFoo, on 05/09/2008, -1/+1Yeah a guy who thinks one teacher resigning isn't the worst thing to happen in the US is what is wrong with this country and should go kill himself. You, 'sir', need to grow the hell up.
You miserable asshat, please go to Home Depot buy 15' of rope - take it home to a nice dark, but quiet closet and do what should come naturally....
- Gamer2k4, on 05/09/2008, -1/+50It's not necessarily Bible-thumpers. Just a bunch of tools who don't understand three things:
1) Wearing a bikini does not affect your ability to teach.
2) Second graders shouldn't be watching the Howard Stern show.
3) If they ARE watching it, they've probably already seen things that are more inappropriate than a woman in a swimsuit.- jakatak, on 05/09/2008, -9/+3Where do you get off categorizing it as bible thumpers. I know a lot of liberal atheist that would have fired that teacher.
Stop stereotyping people. The bible says nothing against bikinis or teachers wearing bikinis.
You wouldn't like it if I said all non believers are all morons.- Gamer2k4, on 05/09/2008, -1/+5I get off categorizing it as Bible thumpers because that's what the person who I responded to said. That's why comment systems are set up as a series of indented posts and replies: So you know the context of a post without the poster having to quote anything.
- Gamer2k4, on 05/09/2008, -1/+3(comment closed before I could finish editing it)
Your stereotyping comment shouldn't have been directed at me, since I said it might NOT have been Christians who did this.
Also, the Bible does tell us to be modest. Therefore, people who oppose bikinis for moral reason have the Bible (or Torah or Koran or whatever; pick any book that's thumpable) as a backing for those beliefs.
- passedoutghost, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2You're right about the last point. I work at a child care center and was talking to my boss when he mentioned Borat. Suddenly at least 10 kids (meaning 5-10 year olds) all go, 'I've seen it! I've seen it! It was sooo funny!'
- jakatak, on 05/09/2008, -9/+3Where do you get off categorizing it as bible thumpers. I know a lot of liberal atheist that would have fired that teacher.
- tman84, on 05/09/2008, -5/+6Howard Stern is still on the air? Wow. And hopefully this woman files a grievance with her union.
- citizenchan, on 05/09/2008, -1/+6The headlines are misleading. She resigned because the board members and school peeps were angry with what she SAID, NOT because she wore a bikini. Whether that changes the legality or validity of the resignation is up to debate, but the reason is not simply because she wore a bikini on tv.
- drakenlot, on 05/09/2008, -0/+7Resigning != Firing

What a prudish bitch.- V3n0M, on 05/09/2008, -0/+39Agreed. It's not as if there are 2nd graders watching Howard Stern - and if there are, it is their parents responsibility to allow them to or not to - and if they are allowed to then the parents should know what they are seeing and be ok with it.

- assbeard, on 05/09/2008, -0/+20What I love is how these people can criticize her for being on the show, yet here they are either watching it or looking it up on the web. It's not like she was "interrupting our regular programming for this important message from a teacher in a bikini."

So, unless someone downloaded the episode in question, someone was shelling out the extra $$$ to watch Howard Stern UNCENSORED on his/her TV (and I don't think it was the children...).

....Meanwhile back at the LaPoint household Dean puts on a latex body suit and gets drilled by his wife with a strap-on. However, since he is not a teacher.... - AYork, on 05/09/2008, -0/+18I would wager Mr. LaPoint doesn't even know what she said on the show. He just heard "Howard Stern" and went crazy.
I actually listened to that show as it aired. (Guy I work with has a Sirius subscription and streams it through his computer. Yeah, I have a great job).
She made sexual comments about her husband. She talked about how much she loves her husband, and had learned to love him for the deeper qualities of his personality, despite his appearance. She talked about how much she loves her husband and how much he loves here. She talked about using the money to get a master's degree to become a better teacher. She talked about having sex with her husband. How is that at all immoral? How does that even approach immorality?
Let's see, what kind of example did she set for kids all over the country? Don't judge a book by its cover. Try to overcome first impressions. Give people a second chance. Always strive to improve yourself. Be faithful to your spouse, despite numerous opportunities to stray. Love your spouse deeply and passionately. Be proud of who you are.
Those are exactly the kind of qualities I want my kids to learn (and yes, I do have school age children).
but.....OH MY GOD...SHE SAID THOSE THINGS ON HOWARD STERN???? WITCH! WIIIIIIIIIITCH! BURN HER! BUUUUUURN HHHHEEEEEEER!- SunCrushr, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2Congrats, you get my "I have to log in just so I can digg this comment" award for the day.

So she was wearing a bikini. BFD. And made sexual comments about her husband. Damn, I hate you ***** liberal piles of useless *****.- SunCrushr, on 05/09/2008, -1/+5PaleGhost, the prudish nature of the people who had her fired is textbook conservative, not liberal.
- Vuredel, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4You're a good example of how the term "liberal" gets thrown around so much as an insult that nobody seems to know what the ***** it means anymore.
- V3n0M, on 05/09/2008, -0/+39Agreed. It's not as if there are 2nd graders watching Howard Stern - and if there are, it is their parents responsibility to allow them to or not to - and if they are allowed to then the parents should know what they are seeing and be ok with it.

http://www.mcvuk.com/news/30431/Barack-Obama-talks ...- lucidapathy, on 05/09/2008, -2/+14Did you actually read what he said? He congratulated the developers for making their money on the game, said the game is for adults (it is), and then said parents should raise their children correctly and help them with studies, not just plop them in front of a video game to "babysit" them. Sounds like a good idea to me. And I work in the video game industry :P
- drakenlot, on 05/09/2008, -2/+5Protip: Whenever you link an article, READ IT FIRST!
- V3n0M, on 05/09/2008, -2/+1To you both - I read the article, but rather than be snowed by the glory that is Barack Obama listen to what he is really saying. What does he plan to do about video games raising our children? What does he plan to do to force parents to help them with their studies? "Hope" and "Change"? Or pass legislation banning these games? Ok, you read the articles - now read deeper and get a clue.
- lucidapathy, on 05/09/2008, -2/+3Going from saying "parents need to be more responsible" to "passing legislation banning games" is a bit of a leap. Don't you think?
- V3n0M, on 05/09/2008, -2/+1Given Obama's socialist tendencies. No. I don't think so.
- scottbaez, on 05/09/2008, -1/+2You don't even make sense. The people who want to ban games are about as far from Obama on the political spectrum as possible. Conservatives tend to disagree with regulating the economy (they make more money that way), but when it comes to personal life, all the business about personal responsibility and freedom goes out the window. They are the ones who want no women's right to choose, tougher penalties for drug charges, FCC control of cable TV, bans on video games, and the list goes on.
Liberal like Obama tend to side with personal and parental responsibility when it comes to those things. You think that Jack Thompson would relish Obama in office? No! It is the religious right that wants to legislate personal life. Pull your head out of your ass. - V3n0M, on 05/09/2008, -1/+1You are mistaken. It is not people "far from Obama on the political spectrum", it is Democrats just like him.
http://clinton.senate.gov/news/statements/details. ...
But you are correct too, Conservatives have their moral agenda, as well. Both sides, "Conservative" and "Liberal" think they know how the government should raise children better than parents. It isn't a Republican vs. Democrat fight anymore, they're both playing the same game - it is us vs. them - the people vs. the government. They're just using a 2 party system to divide and conquer. - Nitrodist88, on 05/10/2008, -1/+1Clinton is just like Obama? Yeah, you make sense. Idiot.
- V3n0M, on 05/10/2008, -1/+1Please explain *one* difference - and if you use the words "Hope" or "Change" or any synonyms thereof, you automatically lose (race and gender also disqualify any arguments).

Death penalty. Q.E.D. - V3n0M, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1LOL!!! The Death penalty! That's it!? That's not even a Federal issue! Whether a State chooses to have the death penalty on the table or not is up to that state.
I appreciate the chart, but I don't think it is very accurate. For example - it says Hillary and Obama oppose the war in Iraq, when in fact they keep voting to keep it funded, they keep giving Bush more money to continue the death, odd way to show opposition... It also says Ron Paul is Same-Sex Marriage/Civil Unions, when, if he were President, same-sex marriage/union would be much easier to get per-state. It also says he's against stem-cell research, when he is for the research, just not the federal-funding of it (which will bring a lot more research of stem-cells than we've got today). Those are just a couple of examples of the errors on this chart. - Nitrodist88, on 05/11/2008, -1/+1Don't get your tears on me just because you lost. Okay, bye.

- p51d007, on 05/09/2008, -31/+3No, it means that teachers cannot go on a RADIO SHOW and act like a jackass.
As for the "control of her life", she took the job, and I'm sure there has to be a "morals" clause in her contract, which she obviously

By your own standards would mean your are being immoral and undoubtedly a bad parent. As for the morality of wearing a bikini. Who gets to make that call? You? Why do people in this country combine the human body with sex and with such contempt. If you were to travel to South America or Southern/Central Europe you would probably have a heart attack. People there accept the body for what it is and do not need to make a connection to sex. When sex is brought up or discussed it is a beautiful and natural event - not some sin that should be locked away in a dark dungeon never to be acknowledged. It is people like YOU who are perverse. You take something that is part of life and make it dark and ugly.
- IphtashuFitz, on 05/09/2008, -1/+35Teacher is married? Does that mean that somebody who actually has SEX is teaching my kids? God forbid that my children learn that my teacher engages in sexual activity!
- CedEx, on 05/09/2008, -1/+2Their teacher is having sex? Well, this hits even closer to home. The children's PARENTS ARE HAVING SEX! OMG! I guess that must be the reason why the first born is always messed up compared to the last born. It's because they were around adults who had sex!
- dynelol, on 05/09/2008, -1/+9Why isn't this a court case yet?
- drakenlot, on 05/09/2008, -1/+3Because she wasn't fired, she resigned!
- ubuwalker31, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3It figures in a case like this that every amateur internet lawyer out there is saying that she doesn't have a case because she was fired. B.S. Any first year law student can think of at least 3 or 4 causes of action and legal theories that she could pursue. I'll throw two out there: constructive firing and hostile work environment. Prime example of why you should always consult an attorney, and not your friends, about legal issues.
- ronaldinho, on 05/09/2008, -4/+4The truth is that they are considered to be more than just teachers......they are also supposed to be role models to those students, whether they want to or not. Most school boards do exert pressure like this. She should know that this could get her into trouble regardless, even though I agree that this is no reason for her to be removed. I mean, it's not as if the school board is known to have open minds.
I also understood why the school made that choice though. The board must be thinking that anything linked to Howard Stern is bad and should be eradicated. I don't think it's so much her wearing bikinis on TV that got them squirming (I'm sure they will have no problem if she was in a beauty pageant) as much as the words "Howard Stern Show". Baby boomers don't exactly like the guy apparently. Despite trying to look from both sides, this firing is still ridiculous- lpferris, on 05/09/2008, -1/+5It is true that teachers need to be role models, but how far does that go? And how is wearing a bikini in a completely legal contest somehow construed as being a bad role model?
Teachers are not paid nearly enough to throw away their lives being boring prudes and having no fun in life just for fear of losing their jobs. Unfortunately, that's the reality, and many teachers live in fear of losing their jobs due to extracurricular activities. It's a sad reality. Good work, christian nation (not capitalized on purpose).- dynelol, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3Not to mention that you can't have a myspace without bosses scouring that for excuses to fire you.
- Nitrodist88, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1I guess doing completely legal stuff allowed by a free society would be the wrong role model for these kids.
The problem with your statement is that you're already subscribing to a system of moral values (morally wrong, morally right) versus something that is actually considered harmful to a society (i.e. criminal actions).
- lpferris, on 05/09/2008, -1/+5It is true that teachers need to be role models, but how far does that go? And how is wearing a bikini in a completely legal contest somehow construed as being a bad role model?

I can. She is a teacher making roughly 35-40 thousand dollars a year probably having to spend a portion of that on her classroom (as most teachers do.) Not to argue that we pay teachers enough (because I feel we do not) - but it is still considerably higher the average salary in the US. - EtherGnat, on 05/09/2008, -0/+6Not very good ones. My wife is a teacher, and she's lucky if she can get a job teaching summer school or with the summer recreation program. We're talking half day for 4-6 weeks. She's lucky if she makes $1500. - brstilson, on 05/09/2008, -1/+13It appears you're unfamiliar with the concept of "salary." You see, a salaried employee's pay is fixed at a yearly rate. Thus, every week, he or she will get the same pay, regardless of hours worked. So yes, she really does make $40,000 a year.
- zizzo, on 05/09/2008, -0/+10Nine months of work? You try working with 2nd graders day in and day out for 9 months. Your brain is so fried/drained that you need 3 months to recuperate or else there is no way you could continue to be a teacher the following year. Also, out of all the teachers I know, many spend hours over the summer preparing for the school year. It's not time off. Teachers sign up for this torture and low pay because of the reward found in working with kids. Since you are reading this, you should be grateful for the teacher that helped you in learning to read. Jerk.
- RockeN5, on 05/09/2008, -1/+11I agree with what you said, svt. I just wanted to comment on the whole teachers sleeping with students: what the hell is the matter with these 14 year old boys who get to pork their teacher and then report it to the po'po's? Lol :)

- catbeller, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2It's the way the country always was. Requirements for a 19th century schoolmistress were simple: beyond the usual schooling and recommendations, they had to be a virgin. They had to be unmarried. They were not allowed to fraternize with men. They were required to resign when they married. They had to live in the schoolhouse, more or less. The slightest hint of sexuality was cause for instant dismissal if not removal from town.
Were these part of prudish churchies wanting to keep sex away from their kids? Yup. But it occurs to me: a new schoomarm in town was unattached, teenaged or almost so, and alone in a big room all day after school. Every man in the town was gunning for her, no doubt, and all the women knew it. It may not have been about the kids, who could hear sex in their own homes or watch it live in the pastures, but about women policing their menfolk. Of course it's mixed up with Jesusland beliefs and other nonsense, but mostly its about desexing the hottest chick around, in a way. The customs die hard.

- IphtashuFitz, on 05/09/2008, -4/+3What's degrading about what she did? Is it any more degrading than seeing women in bikinis on mainstream tv shows? It's a hell of a lot LESS degrading than what you see on just the 30-second advertisements for the "Girls Gone Wild" videos that kids can see on regular TV. The only way you would have ever seen these pictures or known about the radio show is if you PAID to subscribe to Sirius radio or Sterns on-demand pay tv service. - Orrent, on 05/09/2008, -2/+1Alright ElAssoWipo, lets discuss then.
"You shouldn't lose your job for what you do in your private life."
You said it yourself, you follow that up with you wouldn't want her to teach your kids, fair enough, if she is teaching your child and you feel this way you can either move your child to another class or to another school.
Secondly, "Who the ***** are you to decide how my kids are educated?" I'll tell you who I am, I'm a parent who don't want my child to loose a teacher we're both happy with because another parent is offended by something the teacher did in her private life as you put it.
The majority of the people should not have to loose a teacher they like because a few people are offended by her actions, which as far as I'm concerned where not out of line at all and yes, I am a parent.
- eddie72, on 05/09/2008, -4/+5You truly need to get a grip on reality.

- jitterbits, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1Even if the person whose dick you're talking about sucking belongs to your husband?
But screw that, because even if it's some stranger's *****, that doesn't make it inherently degrading. Some people might find picking up trash degrading; others might find selling your soul for political gain degrading. Personally, I'd feel much less degraded sucking someone's ***** for money than selling some crap made in China by 10 year olds to someone who doesn't need it in the first place. - SPThom, on 05/09/2008, -2/+47We allow teachers to be among the lowest-paid professionals in the country, yet expect them to run their lives as saints to "think of the children"? If you want more out of your teachers, be willing to pay more than the pathetic amount they get paid now. Otherwise, STFU. And in any case, what they do, when they aren't in the classroom or around your child, is NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS.
This story should have no bearing on your child in any way, unless you let your second-grader watch the Howard Stern show, in which case, the kid has worse problems than a bikini-clad homeroom teacher.- wbeavis, on 05/09/2008, -6/+3There is a myth that teachers receive low pay. Simply not true. Like many professions the pay is a wide range and depends on many factors. A first year teacher with a BA in inner city Detroit will make less than a 20 year teacher with a Masters working in Silicon Valley at a private school.
Check out one of the numerous salary survey websites to find a teacher's salary. BUT before making an assumption, remember they have time off. Average person gets 10 holidays and 2 weeks vacation, in general. Teachers get summer off, christmas and spring breaks.
In the US we need year round schooling, higher standards for educators (not the glorified babysitters that often get hired), AND higher pay to draw such people.
I'm sure the average teacher salary is over $45k. I seem to remember the typical school year is 180 days. The typical working year is (52 wks - 10 holidays - 2 wks vacation) is 240 days. Let's be generous and say a teach works a 10 hour day and everyone else 8. 1800 hrs vs 1920. A teacher making $45k gets a $25/hr wage. Not what I'd call low pay. ($31.25/hr if they work an 8 hr day)
I'm sure there are $25k teaching positions, just like I know there are $25k System Administrator jobs. Every field has someone paying low. Teachers have just got everyone convinced they are victimized.- wardsac, on 05/09/2008, -2/+4Don't do us any favors on "Being Generous". I kept track of my hours last year and I worked over 65 hours a week. I know many teachers who work much longer hours than I do. There are some who work less, but your assumptions are pretty bad.
Also, it's not the Teachers who have everyone convinced. How often do you really hear a Teacher complain about their pay? I am a teacher, and have never heard one, and I hang out with a bunch of them on a daily basis in a relaxed setting where it would be ok to do such a thing. Just because most people think teachers are underpaid doesn't mean we have some secret plot to convince everyone so.
Grow up Beavis. - VitriolAndAngst, on 05/09/2008, -1/+2Teachers should be starting at $40K per year. The idea that they work a shorter day because school is over at 4:30 is absurd. Our kids Public Pre-K teacher, has to share 20 kids with an assistant. They have projects and computer class and that teacher has to be nanny, teacher, and disciplinarian. I'd say that is a higher skill set than most office jobs and it sure requires more attention to detail. She is there at 7:30 am even though kids show up at 8:30 am.
Every day they go through their folders, look for projects done, keep track of behavior, write a report on the student. We have reviews of our students every 3 months.
And this is just Pre-K.
But $40K isn't squat anymore, with the REAL inflation of 12% which is a good deal more than the bogus figure used for wages by our government.
They have to do fund-raisers and ask for parents for a list of items to stock the classroom.
Private schools usually pay less than public schools for the same jobs (with of course, exceptions) -- probably due to not having unions.- carlosos, on 05/09/2008, -1/+2Always the same complaining from teachers.
I did a small search and it looks like most teachers make between 35$K to $50K a year and if you have a Master degree you can easily make between $60K to $100 at a college. I am sorry but this is much more than other people get paid that went to school for the same amount of time. I am hoping for much less money to start at than $40K and that is with a Master degree and I will most likely not get as much time off as a teacher - Strenoth, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2that doesn't make any sense at all. I don't even have a degree, and I make 40K, salaried, 40 hours a week, and have been invited by competition to apply for a position that would be over 50k. Though I do have experience and training.
But I would expect some one with a degree to make more, especially at the number of hours they put in a week. Private schools and college are the exceptions, not the rule, when it comes to teacher salaries.
- carlosos, on 05/09/2008, -1/+2Always the same complaining from teachers.
- SPThom, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1I work in the IT department at a school district, having no college degree, and I came in to this job making as much as a secondary school teacher with a Master's degree and six years of experience in-district. I'm grateful for my position, and I know that ALL of the teachers in my district don't make nearly enough for what they're asked to do.

On another note, why couldn't my second grade teacher be this hot? - techstar25, on 05/09/2008, -4/+12She'll be okay. Teachers have UNIONS, who provide lawyers and various legal help to assist when this type of thing heppens.
So unions aren't all bad.- mpobri, on 05/09/2008, -0/+13According to her husband, who called in to Howard's show, the union lawyer recommended she resign. Either she crossed a contractual line or the lawyer didn't know what he/she is doing, either way, her husband admitted there is nothing anyone can do now that she "voluntarily" resigned.
- cersad, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1Well, this Connecticut teacher may have a union but teachers in some states, like Texas, are forbidden to form unions. So don't automatically assume that a teacher will be protected/helped by a union in any way, shape, or form.
