- christoast, on 05/18/2009, -5/+56So what? If i was a small kid i would probably be curious about those things and would enjoy that trip.
The opinion expressed in this article is dumb and sensationalized. - polypropglop, on 05/18/2009, -5/+53The shock experiment isn't so bad. If you have enough kids, the current that runs through you is negligible (possibly jerking your muscles).
As for the tear gas, kid's are always crying. It's not like they were bear mace'd by Beth. - unknamed, on 05/18/2009, -0/+43Oh sure, like you've never Tazed a 5 year old before...
- OSA608, on 05/18/2009, -5/+32and this is a big deal because? stun guns are pretty benign. and tear gas? oh noes! sounds pretty harmless to me. im sure it was all in good fun.
- protogenxl, on 05/18/2009, -1/+27This really sonds like a Reno 911 scene
- inactive, on 09/13/2009, -8/+34And of course, it happened in Florida.
- Fhwqhgads, on 05/18/2009, -0/+23"electronic immobilization device"

- Coven, on 05/18/2009, -1/+14Don't they do something similar at any science museum where they line up 10 kids and have one touch the Van de Graaff generator? Don't those things pump out >50k volts?
As for the tear gas, I remember in elementary school a cop visited and actually walked around with a little baggie with the powder they use for pepper spray and let us smell it a bit. They had passed around tissues beforehand because pretty much all of us teared up. - MotoFly, on 05/18/2009, -1/+13………………….._,,-~’’’¯¯¯’’~-,,

Yet people are losing thier jobs, although if some prison guard decided to do something illegal like beat children to death at a camp they would be investigated for a lengthy period of time before being dismissed.
- HamstaMan, on 05/18/2009, -2/+12What pussies. Also saying that something is 10, 20 or 50.000 volts doesn't make it any more impressive or dangerous in this context.
- IneffablePolk, on 05/18/2009, -0/+9FTA: "None of the children required medical attention or were notably harmed, McNeil said. He said the victims, who ranged in age from 5 to 17, were all children of prison officials. In nearly every case, the guards who administered the "electronic immobilization devices" had permission from parents or grandparents."
Tell me again what the problem was? No one was hurt, they got permission from the parents, and it was almost certainly voluntary (the article doesn't say but given it's negative tone, if the kids had been forced to do it they would have told us in big 72 pt block letters). Sounds like a fun field trip. - Ouze, on 05/18/2009, -2/+10if everyone involved consented, and no one got hurt... BFD
stop turning us into a nation of pussies - nullcodes, on 05/18/2009, -2/+9
In India, they have a "take your parents to work" day.
Yeah, I don't know how that's relevant to this article either. Just something I wanted to throw out there. Raising awareness. - inactive, on 05/18/2009, -3/+10This sounds like ***** to me. I don't like the idea of my kids being maced and tasered, but this sounds more like an educational thing; they're not being locked up with a bottle of tear gas, more likely they get given a small whiff of the stuff to make their eyes water, and a very low-power jolt from the taser (which I imagine is a close-distance one), hardly anything more dangerous than your everyday high-school experiment.
- inactive, on 05/18/2009, -2/+9We used to do this in jr high. Or teacher had us hold hands and hold onto a power source. With a chain of about 20 kids you could light up a light bulb and hardly feel the current. With a chain of 10 kids it was noticable but not painful.
- SACubeMonkey, on 05/18/2009, -0/+6Thanks A LOT man. Now that damn bear is going to show up.
- jason210, on 05/18/2009, -0/+5Florida is awesome.
- Coven, on 05/18/2009, -0/+5hilarity ensues
- KaivenTor, on 05/18/2009, -0/+5There appears to be a discrepancy in the dosage per some of the comments made on this thread. The story is mostly political, nobody was hurt, also, given that most of the kids had parents who worked at the facility, I think it would be foolish to say "Well no parent would ever sign off on it..." well, they did. Probably because they knew something about what they were doing.
I'm going to assume that the amount of tear gas used was minute. Anything more would have been potentially traumatizing, I would imagine it would be a "Who wants to see what this feels like?" give them a tiny dose and let them imagine how bad it could get. It's a learning experience. Not too dissimilar to some of the old science field trips kids used to take before people started overreacting to everything. - cornstarch5, on 05/19/2009, -0/+4Agreed. This story sounds like a bunch of sensationalist *****.
Read: "In nearly every case, the guards who administered the 'electronic immobilization devices' had permission from parents or grandparents." - inactive, on 05/18/2009, -0/+4Lined up, I doubt the children felt anything more than a tingle (maybe a muscle twitch or two). The voltage is completely irrelevant here (which the writer used to sensationalize the piece).
Sounds like science experiments we used to do with batteries and such in high school. One person touches, the rest get tingled, you light up a light bulb sticking out of a potato or some ***** at the end. - buddyw, on 05/18/2009, -0/+4I always thought it should be called Tampa 911.
- bigteebo, on 05/18/2009, -2/+6Might as well teach them young for the state they will be living in soon.
- techtock, on 05/18/2009, -0/+4http://www.theonion.com/content/video/army_holds_a ...
- PraetorianXX, on 05/18/2009, -1/+4I've done something similar on holiday at Kroombit Ranch in Australia. We got about twenty people in a circle and passed a shock from a cattle prod...it tingled a little...
- Airbear007, on 05/18/2009, -0/+3Here son this will put hair on your chest.
- altgeeky1, on 05/18/2009, -2/+5There's a running joke around here when we see these headlines:
"Florida or Ohio?"
These two states seem to account for a majority of it.. - vtbarrera, on 05/18/2009, -5/+8Florida: the California of the East Coast.
- plhofmei, on 05/18/2009, -1/+4I personally don't see an issue with it, as long as the parents and children were both expressly consenting.
- devnullDood, on 05/18/2009, -0/+3Man, I have 2 teenagers, and there's times I'd like to ***** out of them both. DO YOUR HOMEWORK! ZAP!
Apparently there's job openings there, maybe I should apply. - Ouze, on 05/18/2009, -0/+3little ***** had it coming
- Raesear, on 05/18/2009, -0/+3Then why was his child at a "Bring your child to work day?" That doesn't make any sense, and along with the sensationalism in the rest of the article, brings some of the reporting into question. If indeed the warden's daughter was there without him or his consent, then maybe they should be reporting on the kidnapping.
The problem with this is it is apparently against procedure. Nothing more. - pbloem, on 05/18/2009, -1/+4We did this in school as well. The problems can come when one kid accidentally grounds themselves on a metal chair or something, cutting the chain and upping the current. As long as they're standing and have shoes on though, they'll be perfectly fine.
- jbird32275, on 05/18/2009, -0/+3It is America's wang.
- inactive, on 05/18/2009, -0/+2funny, that's what digging a comment is for.
- inactive, on 05/18/2009, -0/+2I feel bad for all the kids who try the van de graff generator in science fairs too.
- inactive, on 05/18/2009, -0/+2The police station (ours had detainment cells) was the best field trip when I was in elementary school.
They would cuff you, print you, put you in a holding cell and leave you unattended and without entertainment alone for a few minutes. Which was both cool and scary as a kid. They let us smell mace, hold their guns, turn on the sirens in cars showed us how chemical road flres work and how they can work even if you dump water on them.
After being released, the police gave us ice cream and sat us down in a board room, and told us that we had no reason to be afraid of police because they keep good people safe. They also told us about trusting people. How not to get into cars with strangers (police included) unless your mom or dad know. Everyone in the station hugged us, and told us they would protect us while we grew up. (there was a big hugging line and we got to feel their bullet proof vests at the same time.)
It was probably the most memorable field trip I ever had. - MotoFly, on 05/18/2009, -2/+4RTFA
- drprince89, on 05/18/2009, -1/+3I couldnt agree any more.
- inactive, on 05/18/2009, -0/+2You'd like to ***** out of your teenagers? Man...
- inactive, on 05/18/2009, -0/+2They put them in a room and gassed it. Let the kids run around screaming running into razorblade covered walls, then they tased the bunch to make them calm down. Only after they put children in solitary confinement as well. Then they revived the nazi party to kick the Jews off of Jupiter, and also to build an ice cream mountain made of only vanilla.
- MixMastaKooz, on 05/18/2009, -1/+3@limbride 1st. They used stun guns, and not tazers. 2. The Van de Graaf generator I used in my science shows produced between 40,000 to 50,000 volts (on especially dry day, even more!). You need to remember that it's not the voltage that'll get you, but the amperage. Not only would I shock myself, but it was harmless to have kids put their hands on it (thus "raising" their hair) or get shocked by it: of course, you had to warn them. I would assume that if an adult was "stunned" with kids holding hands, it wouldn't be that big a deal because by the time the current reaches the kids, resistance would have diminished the current's power (as long, as pbloem states, one kid doesn't become grounded). In controlled conditions, these can be highly educational experiences. Although, I'm not sure about the use of tear gas as an educational tool. If the older kids were aged 16 and over as some were and they wanted to try it, a controlled experience could be beneficial in the right context.
- drprince89, on 05/18/2009, -1/+3Then that guy is an idiot, why would you run around blinded if you are in a controlled environment, that's no one's fault but his own, also keep in mind how many recruits are acclimated to these gasses in the same way, just because one guy was an idiot doesnt mean that the procedure doesnt work. As for the kids, get over it, no one got hurt, and as stated before these are common practices with police and museum demonstrations, so maybe everyone should stfu and stop being such pussies about everything that happens to kids now days. My parents didnt live in such a pussified society and they turned out great as most Americans who grew up without all this media ***** did.
- jahru77, on 05/18/2009, -1/+3Florida...never fails.
- razrielle, on 05/18/2009, -1/+3I remember on the radio show Loveline, it used to be Germany or Florida
- Raesear, on 05/18/2009, -0/+2I highly doubt they actually gassed the children. Most likely they let them get a whiff of a tiny amount that made their eyes water.
I remember doing something similar in elementary school. - cran, on 05/19/2009, -0/+1Nothing wrong with trying out a little of any of these things, especially if both the parents and the child want to participate.
- catxors, on 05/18/2009, -0/+1Beating children to death at a camp is potentially part of their job duties (not that I approve) so the authorities would want to investigate first. But nothing about their job requires tasering their children, so they got no protection.
