- JohnnyQwest, on 10/06/2008, -3/+54What? Celibacy isn't cool anymore? Time to go lose my virginity....
- MiIhouse, on 10/07/2008, -4/+51That article is such a load of crap. I was born in Albanian, I spent 8 years there, and I was there again for the summers of 02, 04, 06, 07, 08. Albania is NOTHING like described in that article, if you ever meet an Albanian on the street, ask him/her about "sworn virgins" and he/she will most likely reply "wtf is that". I have never heard of anyone saying "thats it I want respect etc, I'm cutting my hair and quitting sex, and thus become a man". You would be laughed at, if you said such a thing. This article is greatly exaggerated, maybe in some small town in the middle of nowhere there was a weird people who did that, but in no way is that a national thing, I went to school in Albania, and hell, I've never heard of this. So please take this article with a grain of salt you as westerners say.
- AFelsinger, on 10/06/2008, -2/+34Strange world...
- inactive, on 10/06/2008, -3/+26I guess we know who wears the pants around there...
- MacBookForMe, on 10/06/2008, -0/+21...try to find the best offer on eBay, mate :)
- billbugger, on 10/06/2008, -2/+22They're Scissoring!
- jebus123, on 10/07/2008, -1/+20'Sworn Virgins' Dying Out In Albania... I guess they're not reproducing.
- Julie188, on 10/07/2008, -8/+25I think it's time to get rid of patriarchal societies. It's the root of more evil than money.
- brainnovate, on 10/06/2008, -4/+20That is really weird....
- frjsanders, on 10/06/2008, -4/+18 ---- On the other hand, Young notes, „this would be a way round for a woman who had homosexual inclinations.“ ----
Can they be lesbians? Just no penetration? - dse78759, on 10/07/2008, -1/+12Albania...Albania...
Your border on the Adriatic...
Your land is mostly mountainous...
And your chief export is coal. - bis01005, on 10/07/2008, -3/+13You have got to be kidding me? My wife is Albanian (im from California) and i've been there quite a few times. This article isn't as close to true as one may think. Buried for being inaccurate!
- Totz83, on 10/07/2008, -0/+10No that's their national anthem
- FredFredrickson, on 10/07/2008, -1/+10I'll never understand why any human being would choose to deny themselves the pleasure of one of the most basic and important instincts we have. Sex is a normal part of life. It feels good because you're supposed to do it. Get the ***** over it.
- kaptnkrunch, on 10/07/2008, -0/+9as someone who lives in albania right now and works for a NGO that frequently goes off into remote places like mentioned in this article, i can tell you that, though it is not the norm, this type of behaviour still exists, albeit primarily in the northern mountains, in remote areas...just as the article says
this is, btw, a nytimes article from 3 months ago...so it isnt like it wasnt properly done
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/25/world/europe/25v ... - boardthis, on 10/07/2008, -1/+10"The practice of sworn virgins stems from the Kanun, medieval laws handed down orally for generations before being codified in the early 20th century."
so uhhh have u ever sat in a circle and played telephone? - jojothemonkey, on 10/07/2008, -0/+8I think you'll find that Albania is not so backwards. Perhaps in the mountains yes, but along the coast and in the capital, Tirana, it is just like any other Mediterranean country except more Hospitable. Albania is the land of Hospitality after all.
Even as the article says, women are integrating into all aspects of society, there is no need for this antiquated custom. - dsendecki, on 10/07/2008, -0/+8Not on Digg.
- MarkusX, on 10/07/2008, -0/+8Sworn virgin? Isn't that like being a nun?
- sezano, on 10/07/2008, -1/+8Fascinating article.
I lived in the south and central Albania for 24 years and stories like this one encountered as part of the handed down Homeric folklore narratives that was supposed to bring the epic of the middle ages in the daily fairy tales.
From what i gather the fascination with the sworn virgins started with a New York Times article about 4 months ago or so. These guys are either following up or recycling. I realize we need fascination in our boring routines, however some perspective from the Albanian natives is, i think, important, even though this stuff has absolutely no relevance at all in todays Albania. Nor was it ever a widespread phenomenon, aside for in a handful scattered villages in the Albanian Alps in the late 1800s. - ahoy, on 10/07/2008, -3/+10have you ever been? probably not. If I was a foreigner reading only about Mormon compounds or the exorcism of vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, I'd think America was depressing too.
- inactive, on 10/07/2008, -0/+7Scissor me timbers!
- MiIhouse, on 10/07/2008, -0/+6yes true, but it should also be noted that it is the worlds first atheist state, which was declared sometime ago by communist leader Enver Hoxha
- MacBookForMe, on 10/06/2008, -0/+6Albanian mountains and villages - a very strange world indeed...but, so very interesting..
- Yakoloi, on 10/07/2008, -0/+6WTF the women aren't allowed to wear watches? Wheres Borat when you need him.
- Literaturfan, on 10/07/2008, -3/+9Incredible that in some parts of our world woman are allowed to wear watches or to smoke. I hate these patriarchal structures....
- hiPpymIck, on 10/07/2008, -0/+6i thought it read Alabama
- hamobu, on 10/07/2008, -0/+5Albania - the only European country that saved jews during Nazzi ocupation is also the only majority Muslim country in Europe.
- lovek, on 10/07/2008, -1/+6Makes sense. Virgins never have kids, thus fewer and fewer virgins.
/ridiculous_logic_loop - sezano, on 10/07/2008, -1/+6This stuff was probably true in the 1920s in some in the middle of nowhere in the Albanian Alps. However, it is a fascinating story even though there has absolutely no relevance.
We all need fascination as part of our boring routines, don't we now... - mdehart, on 10/07/2008, -2/+7As someone who lived in Albania for three years Millhouse is correct!!! It might of happened a long time ago in some remote village. Albania is a beautiful country with some of the most giving, kind and modern people I have ever met.
- dondara, on 10/07/2008, -1/+6@Otto
Well it ain't China is it? - Scrappy1850, on 10/07/2008, -1/+5i would like to know how you cook your steak
- dondara, on 10/07/2008, -0/+4Hehe, you said "orally"
- Hockey13, on 10/07/2008, -2/+6Albania is one of those (formerly) isolated countries that has perhaps as little to do with Sarah Palin as any western country, yet you can still find a way to drag her into the discussion.
- JulioChavez, on 10/07/2008, -0/+4A lot of things that feel good should not be done. You'll "never understand" because you have a very simple way of thinking. ( I'm not willingly celibate, it just works out that way most of the time :- / )
- hamobu, on 10/07/2008, -0/+4Now days you are right. But in the old days people valued virginity and monogamy to stop the spread of diseases, and to know if the child you are supporting is your own.
- robdazomba, on 10/07/2008, -2/+6So, does butt sex count?
- mrsteveman1, on 10/07/2008, -0/+4I live here, and i still think that.
- MiIhouse, on 10/07/2008, -0/+4the article is false mate, even wikipedia has better info than that website.
- CyphreDias, on 10/07/2008, -1/+4Are you suggesting they should be gotten rid-of by force. Or perhaps we should just nag them until they give-in and do what we want just to get us to shut-the-hell-up.
- jdduran, on 10/07/2008, -6/+9Virgins a dying breed? Say it ain't so!
- suzannethetiger, on 10/07/2008, -2/+5The term virgin needs to die out. These days it refers to both someone who's never had sexual contact with anyone, and someone who has had sexual contact with 37 different people and has 5 different STDs but hasn't done it in "that way" so that somehow magically means they are sexually innocent.
Also, the only places in the world where the term virgin has a consistent meaning are ***** where it is acceptable behavior to gang rape your female relatives and burn them alive. - EvilJelloMan, on 10/07/2008, -1/+4Why would they need a watch? There's a clock in the kitchen.
- BoneheadFarker, on 10/07/2008, -1/+4...balls?
- xander, on 10/07/2008, -6/+9albania is a *****
- Jauladeoro, on 10/07/2008, -0/+3This is a little poem they taught Sarah Palin while she studied foreign policy. She's got a cute little nursery rhyme for every country.
- MiIhouse, on 10/07/2008, -0/+2oh understandable. I'm just trying to put the truth out there.
- MiIhouse, on 10/07/2008, -1/+3yeah, I'm thinking the same thing..
