- GrantMVP, on 04/10/2008, -11/+273I think if he's smart enough to fool them for a full year he is smart enough to stay ;)
- RevJonathan, on 04/10/2008, -15/+159That's absurd. He was arrested for this?
It's a private institution. It's Yale's problem. 25 years in prison is way too much. Taking away his scholarship and admission is all that should happen. The article says he "stole" 46,000 dollars, that's simply not true. They waived a fee, its not like they cut him a check for that amount.
Absurd, simply absurd. - bicyclethief, on 04/10/2008, -5/+120If they let GW in, another fraud won't hurt.
- mvanhorn, on 04/10/2008, -1/+107I wonder how his yale grades were
- SpykerSpeed, on 04/10/2008, -4/+63Yale probably won't admit they were pretty good. All these haughty Ivy League schools have to keep up appearances and protect their brand.
- hikaruzero, on 04/10/2008, -0/+58That's not entirely true. While the university essentially gave him $25,000-something in grants or loans, he also took about $15,000 from government loans/programs. That's how the government is involved and that's why he was arrested. Also, it wasn't technically a fee waiver anyway, the tuition was not waived, it was partially paid for by the financial aid office (which doesn't necessarily get all of its money from the university) and partially paid for by the government. So he's ripping off the government, the university, and wherever else the money for the scholarships and grants comes from.
- inactive, on 04/10/2008, -6/+56For me he is a GENIUS !
- vtmn, on 04/10/2008, -1/+45"the student — whose name is being withheld by the News because of his documented history of emotional instability" Well there goes that.
- smspence, on 04/10/2008, -0/+34Should HAVE
- omgTHEPATRIOTS, on 04/10/2008, -11/+43At least he wanted to go to school that bad that he went to Yale! Why the hell don't we reward kids who do something like this, rather than continue to let our education go to *****, America!!
- Bith8654, on 04/10/2008, -6/+34Uh because he lied? I mean think about it, his spot could have been filled by someone who actually earned it, but instead they got screwed because he faked his way in.
- vinnyvenus, on 04/10/2008, -1/+27That was a very poorly written article for an Ivy League university's newspapaer
- st3vo, on 04/10/2008, -0/+26along with a lot of people.
- diggrim, on 04/10/2008, -2/+26I'm sure he's smart enough to stay...but I don't agree with rewarding bad actions
- inactive, on 04/10/2008, -0/+20OOPS!
It appears they have already gone back and removed his name from the article. Too late now, the internet owns it. - kelalo, on 04/10/2008, -2/+18Or should "have", if you like English.
- mzx639, on 04/10/2008, -1/+15Lots of criminals are genius, but the real smart ones don't get caught.
- mkling176, on 04/10/2008, -14/+27Lame. Should of just let him stay.
- Seidoger, on 04/10/2008, -1/+14I've read somewhere else today (sorry no link, can't remember where) that he had won a literature prize while at Yale, or something of that mater.. So that ain't bad at all
- pyro789x, on 04/10/2008, -0/+13Except for his harassment and his threatening to kill himself and a fellow student.
- ninjafish87, on 04/10/2008, -1/+14Yaledailynews.com = fail at hosting
- inactive, on 04/10/2008, -0/+12i say five years probation and he gets a million dollar deal for writing a book.
- doyoulikeworms, on 04/10/2008, -0/+11Ivies suffer from severe grade inflation, so I suspect his grades were just fine.
- jordan314, on 04/10/2008, -0/+1125 years in prison genius?
- StaticThunder, on 04/10/2008, -0/+10He apparently lied on a federal student loan form (under penalty of perjury) and probably broke some tax laws too, throw in racketeering (defrauding yale of the tuition money) and he's screwed.
If he's an international student, he's REALLY screwed, because then he probably lied to immigration about his student status. - shak3, on 04/10/2008, -0/+10What the ***** are you talking about?
- Figs, on 04/10/2008, -0/+9That and the fact the poster put his name in the description...
- laserman, on 04/10/2008, -1/+10Akash Maharaj was a writer for the Yale paper. If this is actually the guy as OP says, then the paper withheld his name because they know him. This same guy was a junior at morse college.

Weak journalism. Plus they trash him for being "emotionally unstable." That's low - Lythia, on 04/10/2008, -3/+12Hey, if they graduated Bush, how can they not let this kid stay?
- inactive, on 04/10/2008, -0/+9Did you really just say "why don't we reward kids who commit fraud?"
- niczar, on 04/10/2008, -0/+8And on top of that, from the description, the guy appears to be a major drama queen.
- Mofassa, on 04/10/2008, -0/+8No - even if what you said was in jest I think that's a horrible view point to have.
The idea that admission should be based solely on your ability to perform is ridiculous. You wouldn't want a "smart" but unethical doctor - just as you wouldn't want a smart and unethical engineer. Just because somebody has the ability to perform does by no means make them qualified to graduate with a degree. While university's can't exactly test someone's ethics, if you show a blatent disregard for basic ethics you should NOT be allowed to continue...period. - ronk, on 04/10/2008, -0/+8http://www.nypost.com/seven/04092008/news/regional ...
Name and photo posted! - psykiv, on 04/10/2008, -0/+8One thing is cheating to get into medical school, another thing is cheating THROUGH medical school. and all those exams. and your specialization. and your residency. etc.
- snagra, on 04/10/2008, -0/+7He wasn't really paying tuition, it said that he received a lot in financial aid.
- jer2eydevil88, on 04/10/2008, -1/+8If I could favorite comments on digg and have them show up in my profile then yours sir would be one of those few and proud blurbs to earn that honor.
- pibs, on 04/10/2008, -0/+7From Yale to Jail.......
- sfrench, on 04/10/2008, -1/+8And let's not forget the times this has happened at Stanford.

http://www.usnews.com/blogs/paper-trail/2007/10/3/ ... - riyehn, on 04/10/2008, -0/+7If he were really smart enough he wouldn't have let himself got caught. Still, a full year is impressive.
- RyeBrye, on 04/10/2008, -0/+6No - but that's grounds to be fired... and it's extremely unethical.
- Rhonwyn, on 04/10/2008, -0/+6Again, this is a lesson. If you are smart, you will steal from people and private industry. If you steal from the government, they will catch you. Al Capone went to jail for mail fraud. If you default on a house, you don't have to pay the bank, but you do have to pay property taxes.
So long as you pay the IRS or the general government its due, you will get away with everything. - MofugginPaulrus, on 04/10/2008, -3/+9Uhhh how hard is it to ***** an application? I could make an all-star application in 10 minutes.
- eir574, on 04/10/2008, -1/+7He also denied the next student in line access to that money. Yale almost certainly has a financial aid budget. Someone else could have used that opportunity. I firmly believe that people can get good educations in a lot of different places, but whether or not people are getting ripped off by private institutions depends on what they expect those institutions to do for them. Some people go to college at places like Harvard and Yale because the network of connections they'll have after graduation is worthwhile in their fields. This person took away an opportunity for someone else to use that financial aid. That part of what he did is not a crime, but it's not so nice, either.

A vindictive gay boyfriend who's also a member of the Skull and Bones. That's probably the most terrifying thing I've ever heard. - Olfster, on 04/10/2008, -0/+5Cross the elite in America and your as good as dust. Just a warning for all you foreigners thinking the US is paved with gold streets. The judge was probably a Yale alumni.
- chrisbarr, on 04/10/2008, -0/+5well, he got $46,000 in tuition - which is a whole lot of money if you ask me. Especially for one year!
- tommyvercetti, on 04/10/2008, -0/+5The article is so confusing. First they talk about the student. Then they talk about Stanford. Then back to the student. Then Columbia, NYU, boyfriend, and again Yale. What is going on?
- inactive, on 04/10/2008, -2/+7your hous is a private place too. If I steal from you, do you not have the right to have me arrested?
- gregdbowen, on 04/10/2008, -0/+5how do i reeech theeez kidzzz!!!
