- JoeParanoid, on 09/24/2008, -3/+19Just because you're poor does not make you stupid or part of an unworthy gene pool (in fact most of the world's great talents spring from humble origins) just as being rich doesn't make you better as George Bush and all of European royalty spring to mind.

- Olon97, on 09/24/2008, -0/+10That's one way to eliminate the majority of abortions in the U.S. ><
Alternately, we could make a good education more affordable and available to everyone, so the people he wants to sterilize could get law degrees, sue him for hate crimes, and join the ranks of the rich while he enjoys a maximum security prison. - stonebear, on 09/24/2008, -0/+10Some things go without saying.
- Echota, on 01/05/2009, -1/+10The poor, male or female, have always been discriminated against and mostly by the Republican party.
And a McCain/Palin in the White House is a guarantee that it would continue. - gospe1337, on 09/24/2008, -1/+10Various studies show that most people in their lifetime will fall in and out of the poverty line. A snapshot of poverty is, by nature, disingenuous. Life-time views of income are much more accurate. EVEN SO, I would never support eugenics based on the criteria of poverty/income. Neither of those two arbitrary inductors are a good sign of genetic fitness.
I would consider supporting--or at least considering--eugenics in the case of various factors including IQ, EQ, etc. It is amazing, though, that you need a license to drive a car, but you don't need one to F**k. What's more impacting to you and society? - inactive, on 09/24/2008, -1/+9Your sick man. Go live in China. They regulate child birth there.
As for me, I might be able to afford kids later, so why would I let them make that impossible now?
This is the most ludicrous thing I've ever heard.
Plus it's a known fact that educated people have less children. If the problem is that there are too many children from parents that cannot afford to have them, it is (and this is totally ***** obvious) that our education system is failing. - diggpatt, on 09/24/2008, -1/+9Who would actually go for this? Even LaBruzzo isn't sure it will work, from the linked article at bottom:
"He acknowledged his idea might be a difficult sell politically.
'I don't know if it's a viable option,' LaBruzzo said. 'Of course people are going to get excited about it. Maybe we'll start a debate on it.' "
Also @heartland: This isn't really a case of blue and red, this guy is just crazy.. Although it seems crazy runs well in that area:
"His 81st House District runs from Old Metairie north to Bucktown and west along Lake Pontchartrain to the Suburban Canal. In a somewhat different configuration, it is the same district that sent white supremacist David Duke to the Legislature in 1989. "
Both quotes:

And where is the matching initiative to pay poor men to get vasectomies? That'd make more sense, since that procedure is an in and out thing that can be done in a day instead of an actual surgery like getting your tubes tied. - Anomaly100, on 09/24/2008, -0/+7We don't always stay down in life. To give a woman $1,000 that has nothing for her to sterilize herself would be tempting yet not very kind because she may do well for herself in life and regret as well as resent this later.

- inactive, on 09/24/2008, -0/+3So are we now officially acknowledging that the American Dream is full of crap? That if you're in the gutter now, there's no hope of moving up? That's what you seem to be saying here.
- br0ck, on 09/24/2008, -0/+2"eugenics in the case of various factors including IQ, EQ"
So you'd sterilize Einstein and Newton and and all the rest autistic/aspergers people for their low Emotional Quotient? (fyi - http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/2988647.stm )
As for low IQ, if you sterilize low IQ people, you could easily introduce neurological diseases -or worse- into the population. "The other issue of implementation is unintended consequences. Often, selecting for a desirable trait can lead to consequences that make the net gain less substantial or even possibly a loss. Take for instance intelligence. As human beings, our greatest strength is our intelligence, so it might make sense to attempt to selectively breed for intelligence. This, however could easily lead to neurological diseases. This is pretty much exactly what happened to the Ashkenazi Jews I've referenced in earlier articles. This is a population that, through various influences, may have become more intelligent through a process of selection that favored intelligence. However, they also suffer from a series of genetic disorders that are directly related to the same process of selection. In a process that more heavily selects for intelligence, it is reasonable to assume that the disorders will necessarily be more prevalent as well." http://key-words.blogspot.com/2006/11/earth-to-ora ... - thomas, on 09/24/2008, -1/+3Idiocracy is just a movie. In real life being poor doesn't mean your stupid or are otherwise unfit to procreate. Some times ***** happens and leaves people in a bad situation and being rich doesn't make you smarter or a better person (ex Brittney Spears and Paris Hilton).
- Haoie, on 09/24/2008, -1/+3Violation of basic human rights, simple as that.
- PenguinShogun, on 09/27/2008, -0/+1I think sterilization is a bit extreme, but there does need to be something in place to discourage people from over procreating when they can barely afford to pay their bills as is. Half the time they are having kids to increase the money they are getting from the government.
- why3th, on 09/24/2008, -2/+3Without the poor, who would the rich enslave?
- SpectralSounds, on 09/24/2008, -0/+1You are not what you own.
- thomas, on 09/24/2008, -1/+2Just proposing the idea is inappropriate for one reason. In real life being poor doesn't mean your stupid or are otherwise unfit to procreate. Some times ***** happens and leaves people in a bad situation and being rich doesn't make you smarter or a better person (ex Brittney Spears and Paris Hilton).
- TunaFishGangsta, on 09/25/2008, -1/+2Sterilization should perhaps be traded for a lifetime rebate credit of some kind. Essentially, you'd go in, get your sterilization, and from then on you'd get a little bounty every week for the rest of your life that is equal to what it would cost our nation to support your would be kid(s).
It would only be fair to those who never plan on having kids yet have to pay for all those people who have like 12 kids and live off of welfare their entire life. I know one family like this that totally works the system. Nice people but we are paying their way in life. - hawkeye17, on 09/24/2008, -1/+2Fascism....it's the new Neo-Conservatism!! I mean....WTF??! The fact that this guy is even holding an elected office tells me one thing, I'm never going to Louisiana again lol.
- TunaFishGangsta, on 09/25/2008, -1/+1Again? Even once is enough.
- LilBambi, on 09/25/2008, -1/+1Did I go to sleep and move backward in time? Is this 1984 or what?!
- why3th, on 09/24/2008, -3/+2Because it wasn't wrong until we pointed out the Republican nature of the lawmaker? Judge the law by it's contents, not because you think the label a person subscribes to is ***** up. I seriously despise people like yourself.
- drinkonlyscotch, on 09/24/2008, -1/+0Mexicans, duh!
- ruggerbear, on 09/24/2008, -3/+1At least his proposal is optional; encourage those that can't make it on their own to refrain from adding to the problem. I'm all for that. If it were up to me, I'd make it mandatory, but that would make too many of the bleeding hearts out there cry.
- fmoliveira, on 09/24/2008, -8/+3It's not about the genes, like people are commenting. Its about not let poeple have children they cant feed and educate.
- inactive, on 09/24/2008, -8/+3You mean kind of like the Liberal's Planned Parenthood with it's subsidized abortions encourages poor women to have abortions?
- Sogladtobehere, on 09/24/2008, -9/+3I like it. At least he's speaking his mind and discussing a it in a mature fashion. Who cares if he is R or D?
If you've seen Idiocracy, then you should be sufficiently scared to at least have a listen. I'm more of a proponent for state sponsored education and family planning myself, but... Is that working?
