- makowb, on 10/26/2008, -7/+570Smart kids drinking is to help quell their knowledge of and ability to see the problems in the world. The saying "ignorance is bliss" is a saying for a reason.
- Matt88, on 10/26/2008, -6/+300I'm a ***** genius!!
- JamesWjRose, on 10/26/2008, -5/+258I think smarter people would be driven to drink at the daily agrivation of dealing with those who are, well, dumber than them. The alcohol may be a way for them to unwind after the frustrations at the inability to explain reality to those who are not gifted with the higher abilities.
- inactive, on 10/26/2008, -26/+252Alcohol is to smart people what religion is is idiots.
- yz101, on 10/26/2008, -3/+222smart = college = drinking = ...
- khaight, on 10/26/2008, -4/+167i agree with makowb, dumb people never seem to worry about anything, they just float along oblivious to all the problems in the world while smart people have to get intoxicated in order to forget them
- Trekhawk, on 10/26/2008, -9/+164I envy people who drink. At least they have something to blame everything on. -Oscar Levant
The smart kinds must have figured out the key to life is knowing who/what to blame. - gordonj, on 10/26/2008, -1/+112Um, opium is the opium of the people.

- jjmckay, on 10/26/2008, -7/+61Not really, no. It has to do with the ego, the false self that is a product of their mind. Smart people have a gift and a curse of being smart. The curse is that the thoughts can take us over as we identify with them. The reason people drink is to temporarily and artificially get some freedom from incessant and compulsive thinking. Read Eckhart Tolle's books to understand more on this subject.
I've seen first hand how many smart people don't understand the downside to their thinking. Their idea is that thought can solve their problems, when its just as true that over thinking can create as many or even more problems. Thought does not equal sanity. If thought is not balanced with something else, it becomes destructive, insane.
The more you take your thoughts seriously, the more insane you become. Then instead of using your brain and thinking as a tool, the tool uses you. You then act out the thoughts and the body reacts to the thoughts as emotions. Many people just don't know how to properly use their thinking mind so they try to turn it off with alcohol instead of learning to use the mind as a tool through meditative practices. - jecruzs, on 10/26/2008, -4/+55You mean "aggravation," right?
- tomarocco, on 10/26/2008, -3/+54A high GPA indicates that you are a highly-rated conformist, not that you are necessarily intelligent.
- jayrok, on 10/26/2008, -5/+49Britney and Lindsay Lohan must be quite gifted and just never got to "realize their potential."

Correlation ≠ Causation - helloluke, on 10/26/2008, -5/+38people that do crack are way smarter than drinkers

Nothing new here, move along folks... - geardosdotnet, on 10/26/2008, -0/+31yes as someone of Scottish descent I would say that the majority of the population there are both very intelligent AND heavy drinkers. Remember, they invented the steam engine to distill whiskey more efficiently!
- SillyRabbits, on 10/26/2008, -0/+28That probably explains what I used to see in my engineering school days. I think we graduated far more alcoholics than any of the so called 'party' schools.
- EtherGnat, on 10/26/2008, -0/+26"The saying "ignorance is bliss" is a saying for a reason."
I agree with your post, but I think the history of that saying is interesting. The full line is, "Where ignorance is bliss, 'tis folly to be wise". In other words it wasn't a blanket statement that "ignorance = bliss", it's just pointing out there are certain times in life you're better off not knowing things, like what hot dogs are really made of or what your wife is doing while you're gone on business trips.
The more you know... - NotYourProdigy, on 10/26/2008, -0/+26Smart people drink because currently, this world does not reward intelligence or talent.
- hplasm, on 10/27/2008, -1/+27... the more you drink.
- RiMac, on 10/26/2008, -3/+29...or nerds are socially awkward and booze alleviates this...

- inactive, on 10/26/2008, -4/+27Smart people generally see how messed up/sad the world and reality is, so they turn to alcohol, it makes everything better. :)

- bsdboy, on 10/26/2008, -0/+21I'll drink to that!
- luet, on 10/26/2008, -1/+21I love how many people here attempt to use this article to try to attract attention to their intelligence. No matter how subtle you try to be, it's still boosting your own ego.
- Sornos, on 10/26/2008, -0/+19It's a one way street. Smart people are more likely to drink but that doesn't mean all drinkers are smart people. If one out of 10 people can called "smart" and 6 out of 10 of those people drink, they are still far less in numbers than the 3 of 10 regular people who drink anyways. See what I'm getting at?
