- badqat, on 12/29/2008, -0/+22Now that was a heartbreaking story...
- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -0/+13Just because I was curious how much money she needed and was going through:
How much she think she needs to get away from it all: 300,000 baht = 8,561.37 USD
41 kg *her weight*= 90 lbs
Her factory job pay: 220 baht per day = 6.27 USD per day
39 kg her starting "prostitution weight" = 89 lbs
1.5 million baht the british ***** gave her to stop working at the bar = 42,773.15 USD
All in all, when I go and do the conversions, which I'm not sure are completely accurate, it is really sad. I mean that's the kind of money that is hardly anything to Americans, I pay more then most of that on just college tuition per year, but to her it was everything....:( I wish she were able to get an education :( - inactive, on 12/29/2008, -1/+14I don't know if I feel sad for that woman or not. It's hard to understand the family tie she has, because I'm American and not Asian, where children feel obligated to their family much more then in western society. However, if she were to blame anyone for her plight, it'd be her mother and father who are essentially the real reason she's having to stay in the life style of a thai whore. Is that kind of manipulation and using common in families like her's? It's really sad all in all. If she lived somewhere else, she would of been able to go to school. If she lived in the US, she would of been able to go to college. Good article though, interesting at least.
- lepetitmousse, on 12/30/2008, -0/+9the thumbnail pretty much makes this a sure-thing for the front page. sex sells, especially on digg.
- inactive, on 12/29/2008, -0/+9In Thailand its called, "paying for the breast milk," this idea that you must pay a sort of indemnity to their family for having raised you. The prevalence of this belief is such that it really is one of the prime movers behind the rampant prostitution in Thailand. Couple a generally live and let live attitude towards sex with a ethos like that and top it off with limited economic opportunities and you get a situation ripe for this type of exploitation
- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -0/+6It is sad how little an amount of money this is. However, a common maonthly salary for working in an office is 10,000 Thai baht, less than 300 USD per month. Amazing what some people can live on
- joand315, on 12/30/2008, -0/+6What a great authentic story, full of ambivalence, pathos and heart.
- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -2/+7Well, I would like to hope that within every person there exists an inner strength that would eventually enable them to rise above that situation. I mean I understand her family needed a new toilet, but come on do you need to sell your body to do that (that was a little sarcastic). With any culture, you can just blame so much on the manipulation and obligation to the hierarchy of the family, but if there is a man from a country who loves you, where opportunities abound- why would you continue to demean yourself just for your family?- I'm skeptical.
- punx, on 12/30/2008, -0/+4Because they have a strong family obligation that has since been lost to Americans. You can see it still in the immigrant hispanic families that come here. It outweighs their own self worth, wants, and needs.
- punx, on 12/30/2008, -0/+4I don't know, perhaps because I grew up where prostitution is legal, that it doesn't bother me as much as it would other women. I see women sell themselves all the time, whether in a brothel, on the street, or in a topless bar. And sorry, but these johns are idiots. They are being taken everyday, and somewhere seem to think this one chick will have some special feelings for him. He is nothing but a dollar sign...cha-ching. I can't help but feel sorry for them all, with a little chuckle up my sleeve at the guy. It's the oldest scam ever, and men fall for it time and again.
This woman is stuck because of her family, but other than that, it was a choice she made.
Damn, it's good to be an American, because if that was MY family, I would tell my mother to get her old bag of bones out there and sell that ***** herself, cobwebs down below or not, daddy could crap in a hole in the ground for all I could care. And dear sweet brother could go piss up a rope for his education...like I said, it's great to be an American. - inactive, on 12/30/2008, -0/+3So what's the cost of living there? Is food/electricity/water/clothes high? Average cost of a meal? I've always found Thailand to be really fascinating and If I could afford a plain ticket there, I'd go.
- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2Punx LMAO
- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2Cost of living is low, you can eat a full meal for like a dollar. However, the problem emerges because Thailand is full of so many temptation. Booze and Girls can get costly even if its cheap by western standards
- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2Raw American woman power. Brutally honest!
- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1that scenario is fairly common here
- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1You made an error. 39 kg = 86 lbs. Which is really really really ***** tiny.
http://tinyurl.com/88rc8y - BKKRAZY, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1I think this is more a problem arising from parenting than anything else. At what point do you say "enough is enough?" I know I'm looking at this from an American perspective, but I live in Thailand and it gets my goat to see this kind of thing. Especially for those who other wise had a future.

- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -1/+1I don't think Americans ever really had that same sense of filial piety found in most of asian culture. Most americans come from European stalk and while family is important, so is the individual. Also we had the industrial evolution pretty early on and that changed a lot of things that Asian countries didn't come into till much later. Plus a lot of Asian cultures, especially places like China, have heavy Confucianism influences and that stresses loyalty to family and father before anything else. Also Hispanics have a "filial hierarchy" in their family units as well, much much more then white Europeans. And it isn't just Americans, it's the western side of the world and loosing that sense of obligation I think was necessary to evolve into an industrial nation that values independance, innovation, and a go-get 'em attitude, which can't be achieved nearly as well if you're stuck at home, working all the time, to pay for mom and dad's new toilet. Westerners just aren't expected to sacrifice their ambitions and dreams and talent for the sake of the family and I don't think that's a bad thing.
- BillyB, on 12/30/2008, -1/+1I was in Thailand once, with my girlfriend. The bar girls tried to get us to come inside. It was tempting. I didn't really like my girlfriend that much, btw. OK, now I'm off to read this story.
