- Snoosy, on 02/05/2009, -10/+183Sane Myspace user is an oxymoron.
- ZeoFateX, on 02/05/2009, -7/+141Strangely I was expecting this to be an Onion article...
- ileftfark, on 02/05/2009, -20/+133Anyone else wonder about the 22-year old who meets teen guys on Myspace and has webcam chats with them? No? OK.
- bullhead2007, on 02/05/2009, -3/+111I'm sure they will be friends for life.
During my teen years I spent a lot of time on IRC (there was no freaking webcam/chatrooms on the web back then). And one of my online friends was depressed and suicidal thanks to her ***** up family. One night she was about to actually try and kill herself and I was able to talk her out of it. Sure it might have been a cry for attention, but through our friendship she was able to pull herself up and now is a very happy person who got away from the ***** up ***** in her life. She considers me to be like a brother and basically feels like I saved her life.
I imagine this person might feel the same way. I'm not sure exactly why I'm sharing this, because I never have, but it just reminded me of what happened to me and how I gained one of the best friends I could ever ask for. - kkxxyy, on 02/05/2009, -4/+88I am glad that /b/ wasn't there. The kid would've taken his life for sure.
- ShoggothDreams, on 02/05/2009, -10/+66*sigh* The guy saves the kid's life, but it was inevitable that someone would have to be that cynical. Would that mean anyone who volunteers to work with kids must also have ulterior motives? That mindset is just another symptom of the shift in culture that makes some able to "egg on" a jumper or webcam suicide.
- metaliq, on 02/05/2009, -0/+44I'm 21 and I have an array of friends that go down to maybe 16 years old. It's really not that weird at all.
I had older friends when I was younger, too. Some of my closest friends are 25, 26 years old. The age gap isn't a problem if you're mature enough to look past it. - txchica, on 02/05/2009, -2/+42You would think so, too bad it didn't work out that way for that kid (also mentioned in this article) who killed himself on-line and was being egged on by people watching it on web cam, someone finally called it in but it was too late. Sadly humanity is not all that common anymore.
- zeshenone, on 02/05/2009, -7/+44DO IT, *****
- iEATcatFOOD, on 02/05/2009, -4/+37Thats a first. Usually you'd read "DO IT *****" somewhere in the webchat. Or something like "I told you I was hardcore..."
Well good for this kid. - erictheninja, on 02/05/2009, -4/+36I find it disturbing how many negative comments there are above mine. The guy saved a person's life and yet users are harping on him because he's got a MySpace account and is older than the kid he befriended.
Some people out there want to help others and share what they've learned. - inactive, on 02/05/2009, -5/+36Volunteering to work with kids is different then checking out teenage myspace accounts.
- Danltn, on 02/05/2009, -1/+31I frequently have chats with 22 year olds, yet only being a late-teenager myself.
Just want to make that point that not everyone talking to someone of a different age-group has a hidden agenda. - austang, on 02/05/2009, -0/+29my dog saved my life, and he's not human.
- bullhead2007, on 02/06/2009, -2/+31Why do you want to know? I don't give it out to strangers. STRANGER DANGER!
- inactive, on 02/05/2009, -1/+27teen could be 18 or 19.
- ulmedas, on 02/06/2009, -1/+21I really hate the phrase "cry for attention"
It get put out by people who have little empathy. What you did was wonderful. If you hadn't done anything, then her cry for attention might have resulted in something horrid. - kismetropolis, on 02/05/2009, -0/+19You'd be surprised how many people will encourage someone suicidal to "go on and do it" or "jump" or whatever.
I guess "humane My Space user" implies too much about the type of people who lack the empathy and compassion to do what this man did. - MalarkeyPN, on 02/06/2009, -1/+19FTA:
"There. Finally a social networking feel-good story."
True 'dat - bullhead2007, on 02/06/2009, -1/+18Haha yeah. Well first of all she's in a different state so I'm fine with just being friends. Trust me though years ago I tried, but she thought it was weird. I don't really care I'm in a relationship :P
- str1fe, on 02/06/2009, -3/+19As much as I love cats, that's why dogs are the best animals in the world.
- StandardsDT, on 02/05/2009, -1/+17Glad to see a little proof that not all of us New Jersians are careless *****. Congrats to Coltrane for helping that kid out!
- specialK16, on 02/05/2009, -2/+17Anon did not deliver.
(thankfully) - centran, on 02/05/2009, -0/+14FTA: "Perhaps because he is involved in a youth mentoring program, he had no doubts about what he should do"
I guess next you will say that Isaac Slade of The Fray is a pedophile because he wrote the song "How to Save a Life" about a teen boy he was mentoring.
With that being said... how did this dude find the kid on myspace? I have chatted with kids on forums that I visit but if you just find some random person on myspace then that is kind of weird. - inactive, on 02/06/2009, -0/+14You got to be constantly on the tips of your toes to not get fooled by the onion!
Although they still get me almost every time and its always when I least expect it. Thats just the magic of the onion I guess. :) - ryan83189, on 02/05/2009, -0/+14So everyone will die, instead of a few suicidal people?
- Surbrus, on 02/06/2009, -1/+14It is pretty obvious /b/ got the first one though. What would you do if a legion of sweaty fat kids in Guy Fawkes masks were egging you on from their mothers' basements?.. personally I would say, "wtf how did I get into this situation?", and then I would correct it.
- akula89, on 02/06/2009, -0/+13when I tried to kill myself I didn't tell anyone. that's when it's most serious.
- had3l, on 02/06/2009, -0/+11It's not at all weird for 22 year-olds to have say, 16-17 year old friends. Heck, I am 25 and I have 18 year old friends...
- pitdog, on 02/06/2009, -0/+11"webcam suicide"
one kills himself with a webcam? there are easier ways... - ToastPop, on 04/17/2009, -0/+9Obviously you've never seen the folks at 4chan...
- nixpix66, on 02/06/2009, -2/+11I know I WILL!!!!!
- FyberOptic, on 02/06/2009, -3/+11People threatening to kill themselves on the internet are a dime a dozen. Last time I came across someone like that, I basically told them to go ahead and shut up about it already. They of course then tried to blame me for what they were doing/about to do as a result, but I told'em another expletive-laden version of "don't try to pin that on me", and closed the messenger.
Spoiler: They never killed themself or even tried. Doesn't take a psychologist to tell when someone is full of *****. I just can't muster any sympathy for people like that anymore. Showing them that you aren't buying into their attention grab is the only way to deal with that kind of person, or they'll just keep on doing that ***** to you and trying to make you feel guilty.
Of course, if somebody was on a webcam cutting themselves, that's different. Somebody is actually in trouble, so I'd let the cops handle it, as any decent person should. But as I said, people actually going through with it are surely very few and far between. And when you come across enough of'em, you just stop caring about whatever trivial drama led to it. - inactive, on 02/06/2009, -0/+8As a Sacramentan, I can't exactly blame this teen for feeling suicidal. There's nothing to do after 10 pm.
- ha3er0, on 06/16/2009, -5/+13I think this is newsworthy because there are sane myspace users out there..
- zip000, on 02/06/2009, -0/+8The problem isn't a new problem. It's actually a common phenomenon of distributed responsibility. The more people that are available to take responsibility and do something about a situation, the less individual responsibility any one individual feels.
You hear a car wreck down the street or gun shots a mile away, or you see someone killing himself online you think - I'm sure someone will call the police.
The problem is: everyone thinks that and then no one actually does it. Or someone does eventually, but it takes entirely too long. We all like to think we'd be better, but most of the time we wouldn't. You can't blame it on us all becoming degenerate over time; that's pretty much just a myth. - fendereff, on 02/06/2009, -0/+8Actually, depression can be heavily influenced by your genes.
- inactive, on 02/06/2009, -1/+9I know that whenever I see an article dealing with suicide I immediately think comedy.
- Vindexus, on 02/06/2009, -0/+8Friend zone.

- inactive, on 02/05/2009, -2/+9Why do people always expect a onion article for each story on digg?
- ulmedas, on 02/06/2009, -0/+7I think Humanity is quite common, unfortunately it does not rate a good news story for the rags.
- Gankfest, on 02/06/2009, -0/+7Because reality is stranger than fiction.
- precog29, on 02/06/2009, -0/+7I've had a few similar situations where I will drop what I'm doing and focus on the situation that troubled person is dealing with and do whatever it takes to make sure everything turns out alright, even if it means talking to them for 3 hours straight, getting to work late, and other things.
Suicide is a very serious problem. The mindset of believing that you must die instead of live is against your natural self preservation instincts you have from birth to the moment or moments it changes sour.
The best thing you can do is always take it seriously and show the emotional person that you have just as much adamant emotion about their issue as they do.
They will mask and hide the subconscious seeded effect that you have on them at the time, and most will sleep on it and change their minds in the morning or after they have a changed mindset because of chemicals leaving their bodies.
For those that have had suicidal thought in the past, it is very beneficial to setup personal safeguards for your own well being such as immediately realizing your having suicidal thoughts for longer than 7 seconds, and that you should tell someone about as soo nas possible, meaning if your at a computer, reach out and message someone and tell them and get them included. If you have people living with you, wake them up, or directly tell them that you are having suicidal thoughts and need to talk it out.
There are really good people, compassionate people that will help you at a moments notice, because they not only care about you, but they care about every human being that exists. - blankman, on 02/06/2009, -2/+9Human means nothing. Look at the history of our race. Public stonings, public executions, gladiator fighting.
Then lets not forget all the fine folks in New Orleans looting, and shooting at rescue helicopters, and cops telling people their on their own everyone for themselves.
Then there's the countless people you've seen on the news who were dying or being mugged on the street while bystanders walk by not even giving it a second glance or thought.
And all the people at every accident who crowd around to look to see if they see anything.
And all the people on the street who would just as soon kick you in the face than smile.
And just on that plane that crashed in the Hudson River, they tried to pretend that it was all orderly and everything, but people inside said everyone was pushing and shoving for the exits.
The majority of people are selfish animals who can easily get joy out of the suffering of others as long as it's not too personal to them.
That's humanity. - Monamo, on 02/05/2009, -1/+7Exactly what I had expected
- smemily, on 02/06/2009, -1/+7A tooter?
Really?
God, not in English I hope. - djtomorama, on 02/06/2009, -1/+7Coltrane.
